The man called Amole Gupte…
….Finally met him. Its been more than a year that i have been hearing and reading about him in every possible film magazine and newspapers, without even knowing how he looks like. Who, who is this Amole ? With every new(s) update on Taare Zameen Par, i would struggle more with all the why, how, who, when, where ? Would wonder if Amole have ever read/heard the lines…bol ki labh azaad hai tere. If yes, then where is he ? If not, then why not ? dont like those who havent heard/read Faiz Anwar Faiz’s bol…The questions were many. There was only one answer. Amole Gupte.
Juhu’s Beasnt Montessori School. About 12 in the afternoon. Gupte’s assistant showed me..there he is. All i could see was kids singing, dancing and playing. Its difficult to spot a man there in his shots and white t-shirt, if it wasnt for his Osho Rajneesh style hair and beard. Met him and told him to carry on with his kids, we can chat up once he is done. Amole is helping the kids with their musical show. His son also studies there. I found one more way to be with my son, even when he is in his school. Then why not ? As i stood in one corner watching him sing and dance with the kids, i could slowly find the answers to my questions. Amole has been working with kids for more than eight years now. How ? Its the calling, you just have to listen to that. The story came first or the kids ? It was egg and chicken scene, i guess.
He knows one thing for sure….The character Aamir plays in the film is tribute to my art teacher and principal R S Nikumbh. Thats the name of Aamir’s character in the film. The character has lot of similarities with what Amole has been doing since last few years.
Gupte is trained painter and has acted in lot mnay films. Was going to write in details. But saw that Guru D has already done that. He knows him much better. My observations are just from our first meeting.
Its dream debut that anyone can think of. One of the biggest stars of the country not only decides to act in the film but also produce it. Wow!! But then life is not that simple. You can never read the other person’s mind, he may be your best friend. And if bollywood hasnt corrupted you then even God cant save you. So, what happened ?
Kartik wrote a post sometime back…. http://passionforcinema.com/when-mr-ajay-muley-became-a-prostitute/ .
Agree completly. My emotional brain which can sometime read mind was at work and could think of this example. KK also thought something like that……You have a bright and cute kid but dont have the money to raise him. You get a sponsor. You start dreaming about his future. Suddenly, the sponsor wants to be the father otherwise go find a new sponsor. But i have my plans in place ? Where can you find one more sponsor because others just want the street smart kids. they dont wait for the kid to grow up. You compromise. You think the kid’s future is much bigger than your father tag. So, let it be. Let the kid grow up with much bigger tag (as they put in ads and commercials) “grown up kid” sponsored by the sponsor. You smile to see the healthy kid. You forget Faiz and go by the quote…the first thing you learn to kill is your ego. After all, the kid would have no future without the sponsor.
I have confidently survived the crisis, the worst possible in my life. But am a happy man today. Am not answerable to anyone. Its between two people. I only have good wishes for the film and Aamir. Lets not deviate from the issue. Now its only about TZP
Aamir has always been ghost director…my friend argued…this time the chap amole must be terribly bad who could not direct this simple film. My friend has seen the film and loved it. I said…No, since aamir has always been the ghost director and this time he was the producer also, so he could easily move to the director’s chair. He must have realised that the script is superb and thats why he decided to produce it. Everything was going in his favour. But anyway nobody knows what exactly happened. Amole is sad but not bitter anymore. He believes in “karmic cycle” which keeps on turning. We dont need to punish anyone for anything.
Amole asks his kid to pack up. He is busy making sand cakes ( if u r wondering what is sand cake…put some water in sand and try to give some shape to it). Let them dry. We will take them home for lunch. The man who can wait for the sand cakes to dry, can write TZP and can wait for his second film too, hopefully as a director.
Amole has moved to his seond film now. Again with kids. This time he is doing something unique. He is writing and composing the song with the kids. So, its their thought and their words. You just need to put them together. Whats the point of asking an adult person to think like a kid and write when we can have the kids for that. I could not agree more. And his t-shirt read “i love montessori” :-)
And here is one confession. Yes, m biased against aamir khan, the person. Think he takes himself too seriously. He is the gyaan-guni one who can deliver lecture to anyone on anything without knowing much. We dissect him only post-lagaan. Please do see him pre-lagaan also. The activist Khan (RDB) became the sensitive Khan (TZP) and I am sure that he will spread awareness about memory games (Ghazni) during his next release. He doesnt stand up for thoughts he believes in. Its only for the films. But then I do admire him for his guts. I love him as an actor. If TZP is good, it will be one tight slap (mtv style) for all those buffoons of bollywood. And for once, am waiting for that thundering one.

Hope he is not asking some actor to produce his second film? guess not…….
Never heard of Mr Gupte still recently and suddenly to see that everyone from the Industry has known him for eons AND as a very talented man.
its a pleasant surprise that he is not bitter!
Yeah, wish somebody would shut people like Shobha De etc up who consider him over-rated
wonderful article Phoenixnu ….and hats off to Amole Gupte ….^:)^ …..
I myself being biased towards aamir would like to differ to some statements mentioned here…
aamir had a good chance to take over lagaan from ashutosh gowarikar… as he was the producer and actor.. but he dint.. and in the case of TZP case we dont know what happened… all we know is that thy had creative differences…
common sense and logic says that “producer” is the boss who hires director, actor, technicians etc.. and so aamir had full right to back off from the project, which he thought was not being executed the way he(the boss) wanted…
i see nothing wrong in what happened.. the credits are fair and honest…
again, i m not against amol gupte here … its just that thy are two different people with different perspective in life… if something went wrong… we dont have to blame one of them…
if amol was hurt and had to cut down his ego( as the author says) then y did he agree to let aamir direct the movie?
wasnt he confident and proud enough of his “child”(script), that he needed an aamir for its succcess??
in past we have seen tht good scripts have got producers willing to put their money into it.
we had khosla ka ghosla, bheja fry, black friday and many more…
and these movies without have “star-cast” were appreciated…
thn y bitch about wht aamir did and how amol feels rite now and just live with the fact that they both are good at wht thy do and have put in great efforts to give us a good movie…
and whts the harm if aamir sayd that kids should be treated well, or if he sayd tht the narmada dam should be built after properly relocating the villagers who would be homeless instead… do we have the sensibility to listen what a person is saying rather than bitch about “why” and “when” he said it?
what if john would have said that smoking is injurious to health… isnt it true?? so wht if he would be promoting No smoking…
whts the harm in a 2-1 package( publicity and awareness) rather thn only publicity which is done these days by visiting dance shows, fashion shows, cricket matches??
hmmmmmmm TZP should be good … but no matter what someone says, aamir is a brilliant actor.
see Jo jeeta, Akele hum .. and then see Josh
see RDB and then see AKS
see lagaan and then see swades …
u will know the aamir difference.
having said that .. i wish amol gupte himself had directed the film
KK, see “Baazi” a film directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar and starring Aamir Khan. Things can go wrong. Very wrong. Trust me. See Baazi for a crash course in “What shit successful people have done in the past and how to avoid following in that trap”
crazygal,u r not crazy..u make lots of sense to me.
oz its ur site agreed, but dont be so silly!!
- RS, huh?
i second crazy !!!
with diff topics for aamirs films comin out will mean a better future indirectly !!!
nothing against aamir but a general comment after reading a few comments here
it is too naive of people to judge people by what they say or the kind of films people make …remember images can be deceptive .
crazygal…aamir had the good chance of taking over lagaan…thnx aamir…god..ashutosh must be really lucky!! he proved it again with swades.
amole had to cut down his ego…please dont confuse my thoughts and amole’s quotes. there is a huge differnce. he never said that. i hav alteast 20 freinds who are on various stages of making their debut film. and everyday i hear a new story. from inches away to miles away in just few seconds. many weird and frustrating. for them, the debut film experience is something that u cant describe. a friend who was suppose to sign a film, everything finalised and then the producer changed his mind suddenly..he still cant get over the fact how and why it happened. he is still in depression n looking for answers. when u work so much hard and with so many people, have given few years of ur life to it and suddenly u dont know why n what that happened,u dont how to react…so those r my thoughts. try to place urself in that man’s position. may be its not diffcult to balance ur bias. but yes nobody knows what actually happened.
black friday, bheja fry and khosla ka ghosla… look beyond d names…how they happened. almost impossible from start to their release. and how many more names can u think of ? no, its not that easy. as i hav written everyone likes to have street smart kids. we dont want to give time to the kid to grwo up as a bright one. thats why the copy of mickey blue eyes welcome has so many stars.
no harm in publicity n awareness but then u too become one of the buffoons of bollywood. but dont think he needs to be liek them.is there a philosophy u live by ? do u endorse some thoughts in ur life ? or u r almost dead like everyone else. if aamir is liek that then i dont have any issue. but the “thinking” actor cant afford to do do. atleast i dont like. u can like what u want. n why do we hav to go to john, anurag and no smoking in everything and eveerywhere. no doubt anurag is pfc but pfc is anurag and much more. hope we dont have to repeat us.
Phoenixnu, be assured that the buffoons are slapped tightly by aamir :d/
Phonenixnu..read Anuraag’s association with Amole and now ur interaction with him..thnx for the briefing..Well,if Amole has paid his dues after such a long friendship with Aamir, other debut filmmakers can take some courage and not give up to see their dream manifest with least bit of compromise.
since everybody loves crazygal so much…then
dear crazygal,
its not about movies anymore :)
c’ya
glad to have seen amole’s name in the credits as creative director and glad he has won the best story award
