The Return of the True single screen HERO

Wanted-3

Wanted may just be THE masala movie, the masses have been waiting for, THE movie which I’ve been waiting for, The movie I’ve been waiting to see with my fellow masses. As a dear friend would have put it, ‘In these times of pretentious mediocrity, Wanted may just bring a whiff of unpretentious kitsch, which could at least be reveled in with a guilty glee.’

‘The TRUE single screen hero’ bit in the title is a direct potshot at Akshay Kumar. As QGM would have put it ‘Enough of the self deprecating buffoonery, I say. Turn on the machismo, I say.’

salman_tere_naamSingle screen cinema is Salman’s territory. I still remember the opening day box office report of Tere Naam. Inspite of the lack of pre release hype, dated looking trailers, Tere Naam managed a 90% occupancy all over. Nobody in their sanity would have predicted this. Salman’s pull over the masses shocked one and all in the industry. Tere Naam went onto become a box office hit, and Himesh Reshammiya rose above obscurity. Till date Himesh doesn’t miss a chance to thank Salman publicly.

garv_33Another instance when I encountered the Salman effect, was during the interval of Garv: Pride and Honor. There was a group of wannabes, and I don’t mean the hip low waist wannabes seen at multiplexes. I’m talking about wannabes seen at single screens, with torn boot cut jeans, embroidery laden back pockets, the jeans cap and the salman bracelet in their wrist. Here in Pune, some of us refer to them as ‘Khadki Dapodi public’. These guys were so bloddy impressed by Arjun Ranawat’s histrionics that they discussed how righteous he was and that is how a man should be. I burst out laughing. But then it struck me. It wasn’t Arjun Ranawat who was garnering the rave, it was Salman’s rendition of Arjun Ranawat that was being hailed. People were cheering throughout the film for every cross Arjun Ranawat made on screen.

wanted-4I was never a fan of Salman, but pretty much saw what the fans loved about him. There still is a HERO-like aura about him. There still is a bundle of snobbish coolth in him. He still isn’t a good dancer, but still dances like a live wire with a joie de vivre ala Govinda. The era of punchlines may have passed but still the ‘commitment’ line featured in Wanted trailer evokes a sense of ‘masala pickchur delight’.

I’m not worried about the plot and narrative of Wanted, as the film on which it is based is a kickass badass telegu formula film with a major twist, Pokiri. But I’m worried about the execution of the plot, the punchlines, the overblown fights. Hindi masses aren’t so much used to the over the top treatment. And I hope Prabhu Deva has shed some of the southie elements and has pulled out the right punches for the hindi remake. Even if we discount the southie action, the punchlines have to work. They have to evoke serious hootings and whistling. Or else I’ll be disappointed.

At least the trailers of Wanted haven’t disappointed yet (except some run of the mill song promos). One trailer in particular displays some very strange kinda Prabhu Deva humor. The voice over in the trailer says ‘He walks casually, he kills casually, he loves casually, but he dances seriously’ and then we see our Sallu mia dancing to glory. Ha Ha Ha. After all it’s a Prabhu Deva film.

I’ll end with a list of my most memorable theatre going experiences.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan:
Excitement for this one had reached the roof. Finally when the film started and the titles played with the Viju Shah music, One guy literally erupted from his seat, one hand up in the air and whistling with the other. The Madhuri song sent the masses into a frenzy. IMO one of David Dhawan’s best

Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha:
The Remo song was such a hit that people were crooning the title song on their way home after the movie. A great indianized rip-off by Anees Bazmee. Kajol stole the show.

RHTDM:
My first date movie. Confession: I still love this film

Satya:
I was pleasantly surprised when my dad was ready to take me for this A rated film that too in my exam season. It had a hammer strong effect on me. I was just in the ninth grade and I understood why it was rated A. Not just because of the violence and language, but because of the sheer power of the film

Company:
I somehow didn’t like the 2nd half of Company when I saw it the first time. So I thought of giving another chance to the film to affect me. I entered the theatre and the Urmila title song was going on. I was so damn exhilarated by the atmosphere itself.

Judwaa:
Couple of years after the movie’s release i saw it with a houseful crowd in a morning show. I just about managed to get a ticket! Another glowing example of Salman’s pull.

Matrix:
I went alone for this and encountered a houseful board. Somehow I convinced the black-marketeer to sell me the ticket at Rs. 40 as i didn’t have a single penny more than that.

Mission Impossible:
I was in the 8th or the 9th grade. I didn’t understand the plot at all but was just stunned by the slick events happening and the explosive action. I watched it again, but still had no luck with the plot. Was I such a dumb 9th grader?

Independence Day:
This was my first stint with aliens. The pre-climax speech by the president gave me goosebumps and the ‘boys I’m back’ moment makes this my most memorable Hollywood blockbuster.

Vaastav:
In a way this was my first illegal movie. I was in 10th and till then I had never lied at home and gone for a film (which became a die-hard habit in the coming years). The movie was in its 2nd week. And as this was a late box office bloomer, I had to buy the tickets in black, which always makes it more memorable. Right?!

Jungle:
I was not so keen on watchin this one but my friends forced me to come wid them. The show was houseful, but my friends had the tickets booked. 2 of my friends were driven out as the movie was Adults. The muvie blew me away. i can still visualise makrand deshpande running excitedly at the end.

Those were the days, I tell you!!!!!

Good article…Salman seems rocking and the promos are well, so Salmanish:)
Hopefully pretty much a hard core masala movie with real elements…no those idiotic and mind numbers like OSO,SIK n KI which pass off in the name of masala entertainers.

  2. Gaurang, nice throwback to the single screen thing. Well hoping Wanted will be a true blue, single screen, unpretentious flick kind, had enough of the Lucks, Races and all those wannabe cool stuff, trying to be hip, but turning out to be shallow. Pokiri worked in Telugu, because of some real bad ass dialogues, its not just that any OTT masala action flick works in the South, there have been some big time clunkers, of highly hyped overbudgeted masala flicks sinking like the Titanic at the BO. What went for Pokiri, was the fresh cast, Mahesh Babu proving that you could do a mass role, without resorting to OTT histrionics and screaming, and Ileana proving to be every guy’s dream gal, plus some real kick ass dialogues, which could be enjoyed only in Telugu. I hope the dialogue writers come out with some real good lines, of late i have seen the dialogue writing in most of the commercial Hindi cinema sucks badly.

Pokiri was great time pass. actually nice entertainment, even though it would be considered OTT. Mahesh was really suited to the role, Illeana was amazing. Great songs, fights and brilliant comedy. Plus dialogues were a big plus. It was a total paisa wasool movie. I certainly was amused to see salman mouth ” main ek baar commitment …” wala dialogue :) . but i guess for mass who havent seen the telugu version, this probably is definite “single screen” movie…

  3. Actually pulp/masala flicks are best enjoyed when they have good dialogue/script writers and backed up with great performances. Take Trishul it was pure masala stuff all the way, but the dialogues are brilliant, and AB, Sanjeev elevate the face off scenes, both of them without going too much over the top either. Also most of AB’s movies worked in the 70’s and early 80’s, due to some excellent dialogues by Salim-Javed and Kadar Khan, or what you call the “seeti maar” kinda dialogue.

  4. Well Gaurang I share your feelings and expectations for Wanted.Frankly I’ve never been a Salman fan but always marveled at his ability to surprise us and keep himself alive in the rat race.I’ve been a major single screen lover and though I do visit multiplexes often these days- I still visit the single screens too.Its been ages since a pure kickass jhakaas seeti-maar Hindi movie was seen- none this year so far.

That in itself is making me all the more charged for Wanted. And the team of Wanted is suddenly looking like its getting its act right.Wanted is all around us now and thats good news for the movie.I’ve seen the Telugu version of Pokiri multiple times and even the Tamil version a couple of times. The movie worked in both the versions for reasons like great casting – not just the lead actors but the entire cast, kickass dialogues and some good action.Frankly there’s nothing really OTT in Pokiri- one of the more slick films from the South.

Oh! yes both versions of Pokiri also had a great soundtrack- something that Wanted hasnt really got it right. But still if all goes well Wanted could still go on to surprise us like a Garv or Tere Naam.

  7. am really looking forward to Wanted, and have revised the original telugu version by watching it recently. however, i hv my doubts whether prabhu deva as a director wud b able to shrug off his OTT hangover and give a subdued / realistic treatment to this one.

    .

salman khan is best suited for these kind of roles, rather than playing those inane david dhawan comedies. its time we saw him in some real kickass stuff. and i can visualise the interiors of India falling over each other to catch this film.

The success of Ghajini has proved that the masala flicks still work in Bollywood. These flicks haven’t yet become obsolete. In recent times when most of the movies are based on the lifestyle of urban youth and people, movies like these can bridge the gap between the audience of metros and towns.
For me Pokiri was one of the best masala flicks I’ve seen in recent years. I wasn’t very much pleased on the casting. Ayesha Takia was no match for Ileanna and Salman Khan looked too aged to play the role of a young ruffian. Pokiri was all out Mahesh Babu’s movie. I’m excited to see Salman’s take on his role.

One thing ve seen repeated quite often in PFC forum … is will the southie style action go well with hindi audience… I am not sure why this point is repeated quite often, because I think the southie action have a lot of rawness, a lot of maar dhaad punch kick dhaad… instead of the hindi flicks post matrix, which has an effortless hero and a soul less fight… and thats exactly not what the audience wants… the action happening in southie flicks is surely going to be a hit, not cause they are hits in south, but they kinda keep you right at the high testesterone excitement levels… the kinds that Ajay Devgan did in the beginning of his days… the KICKASS STUFF… while south flicks have beautifully merged the techno matrix kinda works with ekdum jhakaas mard ka bachcha, mitti ka lal action, bollywood has the same Ajay Devgan standing on 2 bikes again, but this time for a title song, which is pretty disappointing… the other action is a lot more serious thinking and mental violence, the kinds in Sarkar or Gangajal… but the “le aaya mera sher” action has been missing off bollywood for a long time and the very fact that audience loves this action is unianimous hit of GADAR, the very macho Sunny deol takes it on himself to Fk everybody’s happiness around him, and the success of tons of Bhojpuri movies, which had the age old formula of Ravi Kisan having somebody raped in the family, silently parkours into the zamindar’s den, climbs up the building, 2 security guards with guns, takes on each one of em within 2 minutes, goes in fights another 100s… :) :) :) mast masala…

Even in hollywood, while the camera works and the moves happen, but those also are like 30 sec sequence within a high voltage action scene… say even in transformers or matrix, while we are amazed by the way the scenes are shot, the action, and the punch kick or high drama scene is so high that they fit perfectly.. what bollywood instead has is continuous slow motions of bikes taking 360 degree turn in the air and things like those, which lack that LIFE of action, and look like mere stunts… you feel like telling the hero ki baba ek solid mukka toh maar, ek toh jaan lagaa ke de de than show us your skills at parkour and kinds (courtesy Singh is King, Tashan and kinds… ) the life to an action is absolutely needed… thats why I think I can still remember “bol yeda, goli kaise lega, paani ke saath sode ke saath, whiskey ke saath, ya direct :) )… tis the high level entertainment factor… than all entire action put together in Awara Pagal Deewana..

      • Bolly, ho ya Holly ho ya Kolly, for a kick ass action movie to succeed, it needs that kick ass “seeti maar” dialogue.

Die Hard would’nt have been half the fun without that “Yipee Ka Yee Mother fucker” of Bruce Willis. And more than Pacino’s gun wielding antics, its that “Say Hello to my Little Brother” that pumps up the adrenaline. Or Sean Connery’s “Crime fighting Chicago style” dialogue in Untouchables.

Problem with most of the Bolly action flicks in recent times, is the totally Lame dialogue. Just putting some slow mo action scenes does not make an actioner, u need the dialogues, the drama, the characters. Case in point Con Air, the movie rocked not just coz of the stunts, but its bunch of weirdos, each loonier than the other, and even in such a mindless actioner, u had Steve Buscemi’s kick ass dialogue about “Irony”.

what makes it even more entertaining in Indian cinema (even in hollywood) is the not just the hero mouthing dialogues, but you have another one character, generally a woman, in agneepath tinnu anand, who keeps making the villian aware that the hero is going to be here anytime… gonna fk ur happines… it starts creating that environment and anticiaption… like maybe Ila Arun in most Santoshi Movies, this old lady in south flicks who starts announcing the arrival of hero … like Tinnu Anand shouting wo aayega,. and bamm AB lands up in the middle of the mess called Mandwa… dialogues, screenplay, the right actor, the pitch, tone… of things apart from only hero also makes a good solid ingredient to an action flick..

You felt for Ed Harris, even though he was the bad guy. The desi remake Qayamat, on the other hand had some pathetic performances from Sanjay Kapoor/Arbaaz Khan as the villians.

Action flicks just does not involve great looking stunts, you also need smart dialogue, memorable characters, tense dramatic moments, to make it a worthwhile experience.

Oh!! I very well remember that!! Qayamat fucked up on all the things that made rock great but it setup Devgan’s depressed/bottled up/brooding character to unleash his fury, so damn gloriously, I couldn’t stop myself from cheering him in his film’s first outburst in the sewage lines after he hears ‘Ajay(I dont remeber the character name), I love you.’ from Neha Dhupia who is called specially to jagaoo the sher!! And the film maintained that energy there onwards. Before that scene, Qayamat was a Shetty movie, where he doesn’t die after about 50 bullets and 5 stabs. As usual he starts salivating, which is his way of displaying the never-die attitude.
And it also proved, Shetty needs an Akshay or Ajay or Sunny or atleast another shetty. Remember, Shetty has only one solo hit and in that too he is in a double role ;)

              Anth – 94
              Gopi Kishen – 94
              Bhai – 97

              Balwaan – 92
              Krishna – 96
              Rakshak – 96

It is true that most of his hits are in multi-starrer.

It is the dialouge delivery, which brings power to the action..which Salman can’t get with that firangi style of speaking…but no doubt it is going to be a bumper opening this friday….

But Vivek Oberoi was a good case in point…. Maya Dolas is the only decent villain “le aaya mera sher” “ek solid mukka toh maar, ek toh jaan lagaa ke de de” types in recent times.

  15. south indian films do not hv this image-fixation as far as maar-dhaarkickass action is concerned. so, despite kamalhasan making intellectual movies lately, he still does a vettaidu villaiyadu and ppl go crazy over his dialogue delivery or action.

    .

surya packs a lot of punch in his action sequences, be it ghajini or kaaka kaaka, or even in tam version of yuva. that rawness is missing in any of the hinid-film heroes these days.

But even in the more serious movies, you see that rawness in his action, for eg, Virumandi, it was action in it’s most raw form, coarse, gruesome, teriffying. Abhay had the potential to be a cult, but Suresh Krishna messed it up big time.

        .

those movies, irrespective of the language, which try to ooze coolth fail miserably toevoke any kind of raw sentiments among the viewers. the new don (in all the languages) is a classic example. i watched the telugu version (prabhas) recently in vizag, and it was so bad, it was cringe-worthy.

        .

wht i like abt mahesh babu is tht he never shouts a la sunny paji to put his message across, but his cool demeanour is so chilling coz he means what he says, and eve prakash raj’s character realises the menace and the consequent damages… thts seeti-maar stuff…

I don’t ascribe to the theory that “the twist in the end” was the reason for Don being a hit.

If you remember, this movie ran the most agressive marketing campaign for any Excel movie. And part of the reason for this aggressive campaign was SRK. Yes we all know he has mastered the art and behaves more like a businessman, but then this movie had much higher stakes for him.
            1. He wanted to diversify – YRF/KJo cannot do justice to him always, and for how long can he try FK’s dumb movies. FA was the next best choice.
            2. He wanted to change his image – Having not tested CDI till then and having faced the failure of Swades, he wanted to ensure people accepted him something different.
            3. Develop a franchise – This I feel is the most important reason. HR has a Krissh now and SD a Munnabhai… In the bad times (which are inevitable as age catches up), it’s a franchise which is going to save him. so if Sly has a Rocky, BW a Die Hard, AS a Terminator, HF an Indy… why not our SRK have one as well…. I won’t be surprised, if FA refuses to make another one (it’s been reported that SRK’s almost begging him and you should see FA’s show where SRK comes), then one day he might just buy out the rights for it for Red Chillies to produce.

Once marketed like that, even Ghajini can be the highest grosser ever. (I am sorry but I don’t see any difference between OSO/SIK/ Ghajini… for me they are all well marketed mega blockbusters which can be called that even before their release)

Regards Ghajini, i am on with u,for me it was just another movie marketed well and did well, but Aamir sure is a smart marketer, he managed to woo those people who otherwise did not think too highly of OSO/SIK.

@Ratnakar below (sorry can’t see a Reply button there)

Regarding your point on the franchise, well I don’t think SRK cares about Vijay (a case in point being what you said above)… they all care about the cool dude “jiski talaash sirf 11 mulko etcetc”…. I used to pretty much wonder how this franchise could be built… but then RKH showed the way in Lage Raho…. So as long as there is an identifiable character, its possible to make a franchise out of it.. Munnabhai 2 just had the 2 characters from Munnabhai 1. The rest of the story line was not connected…. (I guess on the issue of franchise building there can be a separate post from one of the smarter writers)

Regarding Ghajini.. I know what you are saying with regards to Aamir…. I agree with you that he is “smart”, but I disagree that he is a “smart marketer”…. Slight difference… let me explain… Unlike our good old very obviously OTT SRK, AK has never gone out in a “besharam” way marketing his movies…. So realising that this was his first (and potentially last) time, he went all out thereby managing to woo the so called “OSO/SIK Bashers”, who took his word at face value because of past experience… For him to be proved a “smart marketer” he will have to woo the same crowd once again for another stupid flick he makes…. But I doubt that’s ever going to happen (Once bitten….)

On another note, I hope his payout in Ghajini had an equity portion (not just a fixed payout)…. His shameless marketing should atleast pay for his experiments with his nephews/ nieces/ kids/ brothers/ wives etc…..

(SRK loyalist Prahlad Kakkar was convinced that a child labor ad can be to a 100% only by aamir, so hasnt made the ad yet, since aamir refused) shown himself as a great director (TZP was great… ) a great producer (JTYJN was okay, fun, not a great cinema) .. any given day Indian cinema still revolves around STAR… and Aamir re wrote rules as a brilliant concept as the ‘thinking star’ … (though i still think quite a bit of it is dirty, but who is not dirty in cinema industry marketing… ) SRK on the other hand is a insecure marketing guy, who need Karan Johan and gang to keep making statements and comments in press, reality shows, awards and kinds to push his movies… even in his hatke movies (he has a good share as well) he mixes all the elements that he thinks are commericial and shows his ’successfully best’ profile, of songs with the same Farah Khan steps, a dance number, ‘itna pyaar mein duniya’ feel, waiting for directors to establish themseleves and then do a one bit cinema with them UNDER his production… and that definately shows his lack of confidence as a marketing person … rather a salman suddenly going to remand homes, and fashions show stopper is better marketing effort…

and with a supporting cast that consists of Prakash Raj,Mahesh Manjrekar,Vinod Khanna etc, its going to be a decent watch all right. One thing I’ve missed out earlier is that the comedy track in the earlier versions ( especially Telugu ) was kickass- I doubt if that can be replicated in Hindi.Brahmanandam was absolutely hilarious!!!

I think no one has mentioned Aan so far here…I think it was one of the last out & out action movie having both AK & SS…yes they copied a “cool” scene from Equilibrium…but still overall I liked the film…Also Sunil Shetty consumes around 50 bullets in his death, probably for the last time…

    • Aan actually followed a slew of “cop” flicks Khakee, ATC, Garv, Dev, i think Madhur B wanted to do an Untouchables/LA Confidential kinda flick, but the dialogues were pretty hard hitting, and liked Akshay’s performance in the movie as the “Good” cop.

Yea!! Aan was pretty decent. And many of its elements also came under ’so-bad-its good’, like the equilibrium fight u refer too. I was like totally perplexed “WTF just happened?”
      ..
There were some DIALOGUES like “Billi ke naakhoon badhe ne par woh sher nahi ban jaata/ti” and the Shatru bhaiyya gem “Tumhare neeche ki zameen itni garam kar doonaga. ki joote tak pe bhi chaale pad jaayenge”
      ..
The scene I really liked was–Akshay Kumar hands Rahul dev over to the constables. Rahul Dev provokes him. The screen turns B&W and AK shoots Rahul Dev in slo mo and sends him off the high rise bldg. Shetty comes running and Asks “Yeda kaha gaya??” AK replies “Oopar!!” Priceless.
      ..
Here too Shetty endlessly salivates while combating death. Ajinkya Deo is puzzled that Why the fuck isn’t he dying. And then Shetty helps him “(pointing to his temple) yahaan maarega tab Anna marega”. and BAM!! immediately Ajinkya deo, loads the gun and blows shetty’s temple. Shetty finally gives up. Everyone is relieved!!!

      • Shetty was actually a decent actor in Border, Refugee,Jungle, Hera Pheri early on, but after getting praises for his performances in those movies, he somehow began to imagine himself as Sean Penn, and started carrying that hangover into every performance of his, trying too hard, twitching, grimacing.

          Objection mee laurd…..

Shetty has exactly the same expression in all his movies…. From Balwaan to Daddy Cool (sorry for having liked it)…. He never was a “good actor”…. I classify him as Jaggu dada part II…. Sab ka dost/ perfect 2nd lead/ wanna be businessman (here he might actually be more successful than Jackie)

But to give him credit… When he first came on the scene, he showed promises of being India’s answer to Arnie/Sly…. maar dhaad… muscle flexing (even salman was not an established muscle man then)…. and as PS would say…. yeh aaya dharti ka laal… ab dega ek laga ke….. fortunately unfortunately gopi kisen/hera pheri changed it for him……

Arey Sucker bhai… Shetty aur Jaggu dada ko ek category mein daal rahe ho???!! First of all, Jackie was a killer looker. For me he looked his best in Roop ki rani, with those shades on!! ekdum dhasu!!
Secondly Jackie has Angaar and Gardish in his resume. Do I need to elaborate the intensity he shows in these 2 films??
Thirdly he had style. And the best proof would be the scarf muffler coolth he displayed in Gali gali mein.

haha…. I know what you are saying magar anna ka nearest comparison point koi aur nahin mila….
              - waise looks wise Jaggu is +1 over Anna
              - Angaar/Gardish: I recently liked him in Eklavya as well (I seem to have a knack of liking some big flops). But then Jaggu dada is atleast a decade senior. Maybe Anna catches up (Although I doubt)
              - Style… lagta hai tumne biggest loser nahin dekha…. Anna ka style dikh jaata ;-)

  26. Sunil Shetty hasnt done a solo hero action movie in nearly a decade, so chances of him getting another is very remote. For me the ultimate action hero in Bollywood ( apart from AB ) is not Akshay,Sunil or Ajay Devgan- it is Mithunda. How come we are not talking about our beloved Gunmaster G9? given a chance he will still kickass.

But then last great Hindi Action movie was Gadar or to an Extent Indian.
Ghajini worked because of love story, it had raw action.
I read somewhere Sunil was keen to GopiKishan 2 waiting for that.

one of the action movies which had everything right wrt to a typical indian pot boiler masala action movie, but failed purely due to the extreme perfect looking hero with a pathetic performance was Deewanapan … the one where arjun rampal keeps ripping his top off and howling…. the movie had all the pot boilers, but the hero needs to have that raw edge or potential … it was one of the movies, where Vinod Khanna shows what it is to be the action star…. his glances, dialogues, “Shivam Shivam Shivam” BGM, was the only piece that made that movie a lil more exciting… especially in the last fight, with Sukhwinder singh singing away to glory, till this guy finally gives away his daughter like giving alms… damn … it was like the league of action heros finally ready to stand away for feel goody movies…
