The Script of Chhal

This week it’s time for Suparn Verma’s script of Chhal, directed by Hansal Mehta. Suparn was gracious enough to email us the script. Please do note that the script is a rough initial draft and may be a different from the final draft that was shot eventually.

Hansal has this interesting story about him meeting Suparn for the first time. Rediff was doing this online chat thing with Manoj Bajpai and Suparn was sent to get it done. If I remember correctly the incident Hansal related to us, since Manoj didn’t have a net connection (it was still the late nineties) it was being done at Hansal’s place, since Hansal is the guy for techie matters (He’s a software engineer and graduated the same year I joined the college). Hansal found this thin (and about to bald, my comment not Hansal’s) guy with extra extra hyperactive energy in him who was prancing all over the apartment. The guy was Suparn. They started talking and Hansal asked Suparn if he was interested to write for movies. And Suparn goes “WOW HOW DID YOU KNOW I WANTED TO WRITE FOR MOVIES” and the ball was set rolling. Mercifully for Hansal, Suparn came up with Chhal and not EKEH (sorry Suparn, raha nahin gaya)

I always rated the Chal the Indian version of Donnie Brasco as one of better movies of that time, but I felt more than the lack of big name (KK still had not made it) the production value of the film was a big let down. I am sure with some more money Hansal could have made a much better movie. The point in case is Seher which I personally rate as one of the best Indian cop movies of atleast our times

oh yes .. Seher is also one of the lesser known gems .. arshad warsi’s best film after munnabhai ..
another film Haasil was quite good

Chhal, though heavily inspired by Donnie Brasco… I like Prasanth, who did a neat job.. i also happened to see Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II, just recently and ended up wondering why this guy has not got enough outings that he surely deserves..
