Was pleasantly surprised to see the script of No Smoking in my email box this morning. Due to the many requests we’ve been receiving so far to start a script section on PFC, here’s our first… No Smoking.

It is not the final script. It’s the seventh draft that was still lying on Anurag’s computer and in his own words “…you will see what’s missing from it in the film and what is added later like the comic bubbles…”

So, click on the link below to start reading the script. Enjoy! (the entire script may take a minute or two to load)

  55. nuku nuku says:

    anurag sir ,
    you say that abbas’s fingers being cut was symbolic of him loosing his freedom.
    now dont you think that , loosing his fingers makes him more free , as in he can refrain from writing.
    freedom can be so debatable sir , i mean i think its better to be in chains.
    somone like the pm , lets say manmohan singh , has his whole day chalked out for him , it’s simple.
    he knows when to meet which minister and also the timings of his meals , everyone is around helping this one man function daily.
    thursdays is when manmohan singh likes scarbled eggs etc.
    so in that sense manmohan singh is’nt really free.
    but he is free from planning out his day, which would mean he is chained and free.

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
  56. Dileep Kumar Dileep Kumar says:

    @nuku

    If manmohan singh have passion for meetings and for planning out his day,then???? u have taken his freedom…..

    Abbas was a writer(& smoker) means he also has passion for writing(& smoking), he want to write(& smoke).But by cutting his finger, u have taken his freedom to write(& smoke).

    GD Star Rating

  57. Dileep Kumar Dileep Kumar says:

    what if MM singh really want to plan out his day and meetings and u are not allowed him?????

    think similarlly for abbas………..

    GD Star Rating

  58. nuku nuku says:

    @dillep kumar

    ok manmohan singh was a bad example.
    the thing everyone might have some passion or the other but The greatest freedom is not having to think about choices and freedom. It would be great if someone else organized my day, and told me what it was all about. Like a general, or Fidel or Hitler. That way , I just have to wake up in the morning, and the whole day has been mapped out for me. Freedom is being in chains. Free from worry, anxiety and fear. Free from free will.
    it’s just that we people who have passion have not tasted what it is like to be chained , i guess because it cost’s a lot and we have to be really famous.

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
  59. Anand Kadam Anand Kadam says:

    @Nuku …
    If somebody else planned your day ..like a general or a hitler as you say …..but its your choice to let somebody else plan your day..so that will be freedom for you because its your choice ..and that wont be freedom in chains ..because u want it ….

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
  60. nuku nuku says:

    @Anand Kadam
    dont you think choice’s are also baggage .
    think about freedom from choice’s.
    what you are thinking about is freedom in a narrow sense ,i.e-of living a life without the limits of any moral obligation.
    why should anyone submit his freedom to the ficticious demands of something imaginary , in this case his freedom to choose , while that choice might just be something that did’nt exist in the first place.
    abbas thought he liked to smoke and he liked to write , but were you convinced about that?

    sorry if i have crossed anylines to get my point across , but i get what you are trying to say.

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
  61. Anand Kadam Anand Kadam says:

    Nuku,

    Do u mean to say that freedom would be if abbas didnt had a choice to meet baba bengali…so in return he wouldn’t have to choose Baba’s way… ??
    Sure ,what i am saying may sound narrow sense in the context of spirituality …but what i am saying is for the world we live in ..world full with choices …and freedom to choose …
    sorry if i sound ignorant ….go ahead and explain more about freedom …freedom above choices and i will be enlighten ….

    GD Star Rating
    loading...
  62. nuku nuku says:

    kadam ,
    there’s nothing to be sorry for about sounding ignorant .
    i am just one of the many people searching for some answers and questions.
    anyways i think freedom is seen as something which is very temporary in the world we live in presently , and we think that in this state of temporary freedom we are evolving in the process , as man . but no we are falling more and more , and i think that abbas was given freedom after visting the baba.
    because the baba took away his fingers , now he doesnt have to worry about those , he took over his writing , he really doesnt need to worry about writing . he can laze around all day , an let the light enter him .
    even kill his mother and sister ,brother,wife etc if he smokes , so he is free (dom) from responsibilities.
    so in a way the baba limited his choices , but abbas lived in a world where he had choices , and started fucking his own pals , to get embroiled in the sinister world of the baba .

    so the seeker of this so called temporary freedom knows about lifes limitations and wants to be responsible of all the choices he has placed in front of him,in this way only his life will be lets say authentically lived .
    i dont know what i just said , and if it was said correctly.

  64. Adwait Adwait says:

    With all due credit and appreciation to mr. kashyap, for writing and making such a power-packed movie, i have to say that as a viewer i have a different interpretation of the mutilated fingers and hearing loss and the bath in the hamam (im posting this after watching the movie, which is pure genius, by the way).
    The way i see it, more than freedom or anything else, i feel its a sign that theres a part of you that is lost forever. You can reach out to it, and see it waste away, before youre own eyes, but you’ll never get it back.
    And I think the most killer scene is when john’s “soul” looks through the glass, and feels like communicating with the rest of him through the coin box phone, but a guy comes from behind and says “tum bhi ek rupiya dena bhool gaye..” and after that when paresh rawal says, “isse aapki antaratma ko bahut nuksaan hoga. smoke?” and offers him a cigarette..what an amazing irony!
    Mr Kashyap i have to say..mind blowing. Too bad for the indian audiences that they dont have the sensibility to appreciate such a brilliant movie. Remember, its their loss, not yours.
    Hats Off!

    Finally finished the script today. A breezy read, especially the second half, the pulling together of all the strings, expected it to be diff from the film but fantastically coherent except minor changes and added scenes(politicians angle; good that it was dropped). Reminded me of the high I felt while watching this film last year, something that didn’t happen all of this year. To more such hopes in cinema. Good night.
