Theme Music
This post is sponsored byWhen I was doing the post production of my first short film, some years ago, I had decided that I would use less background music for the film. But afterwards I felt that some scenes needed them. I told my friend, the music director, to add some background music to the scenes. And yes, that brought life to the scenes. But, in some more scenes I felt that the music was not very effective. My friend then slightly changed the music which we had used in the titles and put it in one scene. And that scene became my favorite in the film.
Theme music in movies are mostly used in the starting and end titles of the movie. But when they are used in some important scenes in the movie, it brings a special feeling and makes the scene very effective. Here is a list of some of my favorite theme music in Movies. It is not Top 15. They are just numbers.
1. The Dollar Series – The 3 parts Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly all had different theme music. All are my favorites. While watching the movie I would be waiting for the music to start.
2. CBI Series – The theme music of the Malayalam movie “Oru CBI Diary Kurrippu” is the most famous among Malayalees. The movie has 3 sequels. When the 3rd part of the movie was about to release, the theme music became the most popular ringtone in Kerala.
3. Hero – For me this is the No.1 theme music in Hindi Cinema. Great music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It was my mobile’s ring tone for 2 years. Changed it when I came to Mumbai and found out that many people were using the same ring tone.
4. Children of The Corn – This is the only tune that I can play on a piano. Whenever I tell horror stories to children I use this music to bring tension.
5. Running Man – This music automatically comes in my mind whenever I think of something serious. I was thinking of what to write in PFC and this music was running in my mind. That made me write this post.
6. Baaz – I found this Govinda film very thrilling. Mainly because the background score. Whenever anything thrilling happens to me, I have this them music running in my mind.
7. Jame Bond – This theme music needs no explanation. Every child knows about it.
8. Pink Panther – The best comedy theme music and has been used in many Indian movies.
9. Mohra – The theme music of Mohra was copied from Terminator 2. But I loved with when it was used in Mohra. Many other Hindi films used this music. But for me it is Mohra’s music.
10. Charlie’s Angels – The theme music in the movie was of the same tune used in the television series. I like the remixed version more.
11. Mission Impossible – The most famous theme music in Television became the most favorite theme music in Cinema.
12. Kadhal Kondaen – Many people cried when they watched the movie. The soul of the movie was in the background. The theme music was used when the character of Dhanush changes. From a silent and shy guy we see him wearing sun glasses and dancing. The movie was copied from “Klassfart” and even most of the songs were copied. Even then, it is my favorite Tamil movie.
13. Minnale – The theme music of this Tamil movie makes me fall in love. The movie was remade as “Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein”. It had the same theme music.
14. In Harihar Nagar – My favourite movie. Another great thrilling theme music in Malayalam Cinema.
15. Beverly Hills Cop – The movie is famous and successful. But the theme music is even more famous than the movie. Even if there is a person who has not seen the movie, he or she must have heard this music.

hey jj-:
it always feels good to talk about music…
good songs give us joy, but good theme music in films give us that overwhelming feeling which we can only feel but can’t explain..
i would like to add some more to the list-
the harmonica music in once upon a time in the west
the theme music of once upon a time in america (ilayaraja used it in nayakan) r fantastic
Sergio Leone directed films always has that distinct style in music also
didn’t you left out the godfather
and i don’t know we can call it theme music, but in the english patient in some crucial scenes we hear a strange cry like sound in the background, whenever i hear that, i feel like vacuum, i don;t know how to explain
ilayaraja’s theme music for pithamagan was also nice
theme of satya was also fine
there is a national award winning telugu film nireekshana directed by balu mahendra and music composed by ilayaraja also has great theme piece, actually it’s the tune of a song played in the background..
does anyone know the budget of metro?
I dont where else to post my comment so I’m posting here haha.
@jai
You have added three more great themes Once Upon a Time in America, The GodFather and Satya. I don’t remember the theme music of Once Upon a time in the West.
In Indian movies the music would be mainly the tune of a song in the film. And the background music would be inspired or directly copied from a foreign film.
I would like to add some more great themes to the list.
1. Love Story
2. Bullitt
3. Candyman
4. 9 1/2 weeks(Summer of 42 had the same theme music)
5. Iruppatham Noottandu(Malayalam)
6. Aksar
7. Chitram(Malayalam)
8. Bobby(Inspired from Anniversary Song by AlJonson)
9. Satte Pe Satta
10. Ghayal(Inspired from the theme of Black Rain)
11. Paap Ki Duniya
12. Crocodile Dundee
13. Usual Suspects
14. Dead Zone
15. Exorcist
jj u know many regional films which i have no clue about…
but seriously check out the harmonica theme bit in once upon a time in the west…that’s pretty awesome…it plays whenever the hero(Charles Bronson) appears on the screen in main scenes…
and yes about what u said about using song tune as the theme in our films…our people r just so desparate not to lose a good tune and they use it for a song as well as bgm
jai, I heard the theme of “Once upon a time in the west”. According to me it is good only while watching the movie. Otherwise it does not have a hummable tune. Many themes are good onscreen because they match the scene. Some have great tunes. Am listening to the theme of Godfather while writing this. Anu Malik used that tune in Akele Hum Akele Tum for the song “Raja Ko Rani Se Pyar Hogaya”.
How can you guys discuss signature themes and not mention Sholay and Qurbani?
Even after watching Sholay and Qurbani many times, I don’t remember the tune of their themes. Watched Baaz only once and that maybe 10 years ago and I still remember the theme music. Even Children of the Corn, Candyman. I watched them only once and the theme music is still in my mind.
how to download from this
Jai – the “Once upon a time in America Theme” DOES NOT IN ANY WAY RESEMBLE THE NAYAGAN THEME OF ANY OF ILAIYARAJA’S THEMES – PLS DONT SPREAD RUMORS
listen and see for yourselves
I agree with MRT ,Jai please do not spread rumors, even i felt the same . By any chance the theme music from Once upon a Time in America does not resembele Nayakan Theme Music. Please recheck it once again before you create a rumor.
very good
thks…alot
Theme music of Top Gun…..oh boy
Kill Bill Vol 1…..Awesome….its played frequently on the streets of Spain, don’t know the original source….
