Thoda sa Roomani Ho Jaye (For RK)

Baarish ho na ho, baarish ka intezaar toh hona chahiye” – this thought expressed so beautifully in Amol Palekar’s Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jaye, actually speaks of the spirit of the film.

I would not tell you the story of the film because the highly esteemed RK has done that already in his post. In fact this post is on a request by him.

Many a times we go through a phase in our lives, when nothing seems to work right. Not only is everything around us draped in darkness, but we also lose faith in ourselves. We lose confidence and self-esteem, and are literally on the verge of a breakdown.

True, family and friends do help at such times, but more often than not, we tend to shut them out of our lives. The only person who actually manages to reach us in those difficult moments, is someone who can barge right in irrespective of whether he is welcomed with open arms or not.

Thoda sa…. is just that. Barishkar (Nana Patekar) enters the life of Binny (Anita Kanwar) and her family. He is welcomed by some, resented by some, but none-the-less he is there in their lives. He comes unannounced and promises to turn their lives upside down, whether they like it or not.

Binny and her elder brother resist him the most. Incidentally they are the ones who are most dejected with their lives. The younger brother is also going through a phase of self-doubt. But he believes in Barishkar, in fact he is the only one who does. This speaks of the innocence of youth. The young are always more taken in by fantasy and the impossible. Plus they also have the courage to accept change. They are not afraid to dream the impossible and to achieve the impossible.

Binny’s father represents the older generation. They have seen the world; have gone through good times and bad. They may be cynics at times but they also know that there is no harm in believing.

But Binny and her elder brother are the cynics of today. They represent the majority of us. Not only are they frustrated with their lives, but they are also resistant to dreams of a better tomorrow.

Thoda sa….. is actually a euphemism for the never-say-die spirit. It says come what may, believe in yourself, and all the darkness will give way to light. It reminds us that we can be what we want to be, and get what we crave, if only we have the strength to believe in our dreams and believe in ourselves.

Thoda sa… teaches us to never let go of the romantic in us. It doesn’t mean romantic in the only sense of falling in love with someone, but rather falling in love with life itself. Life is meant to be romanticized at every step. The day we stop our romance with life, we lose our spirits and the color goes out of our lives.

This in short is what I found in Thoda sa….. and on reading RK’s post, this is what I missed.

Good post. Credit to RK for bringing up this ‘pleasant’ movie. I think RK conveyed something similar in his post. Just that both of you interpreted the movie a bit differently. Doesn’t mean anything was missing from his write-up. Good job.. am sure this will get a lot of ppl thinking about the movie which probably did not and is not getting enough attention.

Many times we see in comments “why dont u write a post if u think u can do better”, etc..but i think this is the first time someone’s actually written a post in response. both the posts combined convey the movie very well..

So what does the methapor (thought) “Baarish ho na ho, baarish ka intezaar toh hona chahiye” actually mean?

@Medha - Hindi cinema has used the unknown character in a family / community to effect in many a movie. Samples:
    Bawarchi - we all know
Kaala Patthar - Amitabh, the resilient protagonist who brings the town on its feat
Majdoor - Raj Babbar does something similar
Raju ban gaya gentleman - SRK enters the mohalla and life changes forever!
Sholay - AB - Dharam combo, they were the nowhere men waltzing into town as saviors, the town literally rejoices!
Kasam - Anil Kapoor does something similar!

But, for me, Ganashatru and Utpal Dutt’s character works best in this story milieu. Yet!!

Any idea what Anita Kanwal is involved with these days? Miss her a lot. I used to adore her in Buniyaad. Actually she and Alok Nath had this really endearing chemistry going on. She has this smazing naughty face ..very earthy . SHe made a good punjaaban I thought.!!!
Always loved all of Amol Palekar’s movies. Gotta see this one. Loved Paheli too . Rani and A.R.Rehman kicked it up a notch too
Also reminds me of the spunk of Kavita CHoudhry
in that serial with Vikram Gokhle - Udaan.
Those the days when you longed to turn the telly on .!!!
Aajkal saala kuch bhi nahi milta!!!

    hey medha !!
i love this movie like anything.. and to be frankd i hv picked up this baarish lesson in my life too .. !! each time i feel dry, lost, boring or sad.. i jus play this movie.. and drench myself wid enthusiasm!. First time , when i got 2 watch dis movie.. i was in awe.. for i hadn’t seen any such movie before .. i loved Nana in every fram ..literally every frame!
and if you could belive … i made my whole family to sit and watch TSRHJ .

i love Nana’s entry scene.. and the dialouges when he elaborates story of his other brothers and how he always felt that he was of no use, untill one fine day he discoverd that he had the potential to bring rain even in the dire circusmstances.. ya i knw its all metaphors.. but so brilliant .. so vivid!!.. mind blowing

here i would love to highlight an anecdote.. Gulzar saab was asked to write the dialouge for the movie.. but he was so much impressed with the script that he demanded to write both screenplay and dialogue both… alas Amol had diff plans and eventually Gulzar saab let it go.. as he was not of opinion to pen only one aspect..!!

Still Thoda sa rooman ho jaaein is a film for all season!

Switch to it when you want rain in your life and yes Rain comes.. !! thats a truth [:)]:d/

    Medha,

    Nice post.

    Darkndusky@15,

It is M.M.Kreem@M.M.Keeravani and not A.R.Rehman if you mean to talk about the music director

  18. Medha Dutt on March 19th, 2008 10:31 pm

@Ajay: yes Ajay, rain surely comes :)

  19. Medha Dutt on March 19th, 2008 10:35 pm

@Indraneel: sure they r on d same lines, n no1’s comparin Ganashatru! but at d same tym Thoda sa…. teaches u 2 believe in urself n restores ur faith at a tym vn u r most likely 2 lose it. :)
