Thoda Sa Roomani Ho jayen = Keep faith (intact) inside !

Thoda Sa Roomani Ho Jayen is inspired by Hollywood film The Rainmaker but Amol Palekar has managed to make his film standing on its own independent status. He has made an indigenous film. Film has inspiration from Chetan Anand’s Heer Ranjha also, as at several places dialogues are delivered in the form of verses.

TSRHJ may be symbolic also and though on surface it looks as if in real rain is the question because there is drought in the city but its also about drought occurring inside us and when we become devoid of emotions, good feelings etc. Outside rain may be taken as just symbolic.

We also become dry inside because of daily tensions we face in day to day life. We stop having a good care of our inner being and we reach to a stage where we don’t have any connection with our inner self. We live a mechanized life tackling outside problems. We become too burdened with these problems that we start believing that we are good for nothing. We become destructive also in such stage. We start demoralizing others also. When we are too frustrated then we start looking negative in everything around us.

We need somebody like an angel, harbinger who could make us re-learn that we have a thing which is called faith in self. We need to be exposed to the fact that old sages have said very clearly Aham Brahmasmi (I am the divine flame) and it may look as completely alien to us because we start believing that we are not even human or less human than many other people who are more successful or who look happy on surface. In that condition we can have faith on progress that We can be divine flame. we are not divine flame but we can be. If we are divine flames then we are covered with so much dust, smoke that we need a complete cleansing.

An unmarried woman lives with three men (father and two brothers) in a house. She believes that she is not beautiful because nobody has said this to her and she is not married yet. She has crossed the suitable age when girls find their partner. Her father wants her to get married but he is helpless. Her one brother has become cynical and he is mostly busy in searching negative in everything. He has to negate whatever is told to him or shown to him. He has reached to that stage where he has started seeing only negative and weaknesses in others. He has made his younger brother believe that he is good for nothing and he can not do anything in life. Younger brother starts fearing darkness and he has developed phobia of heights and he believes in his phobias because his elder brother says that he has these phobias.

Faith in self is completely lost in this house.

There is drought in the city and people are suffering because of dryness in atmosphere and heat. Everybody is waiting for rain but its not obliging the city and its inhabitants. Inside and outside life of characters has been dried.
Woman likes the collector but he always tries to escape from her. Her father once invite collector to dinner and calls his daughter to arrange for dinner and she prepares the food but he does not turn up. Collector even slaps her younger brother on meeting.
Whole family feels humiliated and woman curses her ordinary looks and fate etc.
And then electricity supply is failed.

Something good always come from behind the darkness. A sun rise comes dispelling away the darkness of night. A man knocks their door. Father asks him to come inside considering he could be a traveller.

thoda-sa-rumani-ho-jayen_audio-cassette-cover.jpg

It’s a night of frustration for all the family members and they oppose their father’s decision to welcome a stranger. Stranger comes inside and he starts alluring all the people with his unusual charming but mysterious talks. Only Father and younger son take interest in his talks. Woman and her elder brother dislike stranger and they oppose everything he says.
Stranger says his name is Barishkar (Rainmaker) and he can arrange rains to pour on this place. Woman calls him a cheat, a bluffmaster.

Barishkar takes Rs five thousand from the Father and says that within forty eight hours rain will come.

Barishkar slowly tries to make friends with woman and her younger brother. First he fills self confidence in younger brother and he starts believing in his worth as a capable person who may do many things. He becomes self confident and happy inside.

Barishkar then address woman and convinces her to have faith in her beautiful existence. He says every woman is beautiful in her own way. You just have to keep faith in your beauty. He pushes her to repeat that she is beautiful with full conviction. First time she feels that she still has some self respect and self confidence and a hope to live a good life.

Collector too feels bad that he insulted the family and he comes to apologise. He tries to say to woman that he is happy being alone in his life, he has too much work and he does not miss anybody’s company in real life.

Woman says that no he is lying as nobody likes loneliness as it kills the joy in the life.

Collector says that he is a divorcee unlike the impression in the city that he is a widower. She says that she knows it already. He says that his wife had left him and had escaped with a primary school teacher. When they are deeply involved in their conversation elder brother of woman comes inside and their talks are interrupted. Collector leaves but not without being affected with talks of woman.

Woman is coming close to Barishkar and she feels good now. She is happy all the time. She has started enjoying the life. Their house is filled with new hopes.

Only her elder brother still thinks that Barsihkar is a cheater and he can’t manage rain to happen.

Next day early in morning Collector comes to their house to meet woman. Perhaps he has accepted his liking and love towards her and has come to confess it. He meets with her father and brothers. Father says lie that she is sleeping and may be she is watching some dream.

Collector informs them that SP has informed him that a dangerous criminal has come to this city and they should be careful. With the description they understand that he is talking about Barishkar. When collector is leaving, woman comes from hill side. Collector is astonished to see her coming from hill side and not from house. He asks about this and she says some excuse. She also gets to know about police searching Barishkar.

She runs towards hill side that she has some work.

Whole family runs after her and collector also follows them. On top of hill she finds Barishkar.

He says that he is thinking to reside here only. He is happy. She says him to go from there as police is searching him. He says yes he belongs to all the places and not a single place. Many people will be waiting for him somewhere. He asks woman also to join him on his journey and then collector comes there and Barishkar leaves them with his best wishes.

He returns Rs five thousand to elder brother of woman who thinks him as a cheater and says that there is still some time as forty eights hours are not finished and he could have managed rain to be poured. Woman says she believes that he could make rain to come.

He goes away.

Woman comes downside and everybody follows her and then she feels as if a drop has been fallen on her hand. She looks upside. Rain has started falling.

Barishkar is a real man or our own consciousness?

In prose we can treat him as other person and in poetry we can take him as our own consciousness.

Woman is played by Anita Kanwar, famously known as Lajoji of Buniyad TV serial and Barishkar is played by Nana Patekar.

anita-kanwar.jpg

Anita Kanwar fits well in the character and Nana is a good actor who can make any role alive with his performance. His pronunciation most of the time is faulty but because of his good acting skills he overcomes this shortcoming.

Vikram Gokhle in the role of collector is effective.

Music is ordinary but dialogues in verses appeal to some extent.

Amol Palekar is not Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who had made such a lovable film Bawarchi on a similar subject but still Amol had managed to make a film which may not fetch very high liking during the screening time but once its finished, TSRHJ leaves audience with good light feelings that they have seen something which have somehow managed to touch their hearts. They have become ready to look inside and to search small happiness spread here and there in the life around them.

If one finds it then it’s a good watch. TSRHJ will leave one in good mood.

    Rather than talking about irrelevant things,why you dont enlighten me, about those exceptionally beautiful things?
    Seems you have been wounded by some of the comments on your SRK post;)

  7. RK on March 18th, 2008 6:52 am

    Write some of those exceptionally beautiful scenes, which make film so beautiful for you. Then we can discusss those things.
    Please keep focus on topic- i.e. film.

  8. Palash on March 18th, 2008 10:25 am

    agree with Medha - this post doesn’t do justice to the film.

    also looks like RK doesn’t quite enjoy criticism ;)

    Palash/medha,
    If you feel this post does not do justice to the movie, y not go ahead and write a better post. RK has been consistently writing insightful posts and this post is definitely and example

    Staying on the movie…
    I remember watching it on DD when I was a kid. absolutely loved it, remember the scene when Anita kanwar runs around the village shouting main sunder hoon nd also the whole ending scene. The visuals in the movie were mesmerizing and they transcended me into a different world at that time
    How Amol Palekar got caught into Paheli nd Shahrukh will always be a paheli for me :(

    This is just a rant and off-topic. But the comment section of this post made me thinking…

    I may be wrong but this is what I got the gist from the reaction of the author (comment # 3) on comment # 2 that he did not take the feedback positively and suggested that the person who commented should write a post instead.

    Don’t we all do the same thing that we criticize the film-makers on their films claiming that “oh we don’t have to make films to criticize/analyze them”.

    Similarly, the comments serve the purpose of criticizing or analyzing a post and do not lead necessarily lead to another post to counter the arguments.

    I am sure with more feedbacks, anyone who writes will get more ideas and will be able to polish his/her writing.

    And it goes without saying that please go ahead and blast off this comment :-)

    I cud nt make sense of the scene and dialogues between anita kunwar and vikram gokhle at her home when he comes in t shirt.
    he says he is divorcee. then he says his wife left him for a teacher of primary school.
    when she left him then when he took divorce.
    he was DM. knew law. how his wife could just run away with other man?
    ;)
    that is pathetic turn in story.:d

    @Gaurav(9,10),
    Thanks for your comment.
    Re. Paheli and SRK and Amol Palekar,
    Need of both the parties.

    Amol got a big producer for his film and a big star to promote the film, before he had made films some of which got awards, critical acclaims but got limited viewership. Everybody wants to make films which many people see. It was an experiment for him. let us see what he does in next film.
    SRK got opportunity to work in a different kind of filmmaking. He might have desired critical acclaim at that time. Budget should not be a problem for him. He was riding on success of MHN as a producer. Paheli was releatively a low cost film for him. As a producer, its an evolution also, to produce different type of films. Hope he produces many different films as he has money and appeal to pull audience in cinema halls. :)

  25. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:04 am

    @Vishrant(11),
    Before high mountains or from top of peaks of mountain everything looks like a mole:).
    Film was produced by DD.
    Canvas was not big. and among the noisy kind of films which were made in 1990-91, TSRHJ film was a welcoming note.
    As mentioned in the post that Amol Palekar was not Hrishikesh Mukherjee to make a Bawarchi like film. If graduation is the level, then not primary school but High school is the right level for the film.

    Its the film where you dont feel its something strikingly good but where you dont feel film gave you bad impression. It was for DD and it was seen through DD. Its doubtful if people will go to cinema hall to watch it, specially now when ticket costs are facing higher side. Albeit on DVD it can taste a good success
    :)

  26. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:07 am

    @Shailesh (12),
    If you dont recall your childhood viewing of the film but in general you have been liking DD’s productions then you will like it. Give a try.:)
    and moreover to study a filmmakers journey also, it will be good to see how far Amol Palekar has travelled as a director from his second directorial venture. :)

  27. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:30 am

    @Vishesh (13),
    you caught only comment (3) and missed (4).
    To ask for commentators to make a post is done all the time. At times it may look as challenge but motives may be different.
    For recent example: read SRK phenomenon post, there was some commentator Anika or Anita who had commented that “She could write better”.
    Below her comment you will find my comment asking her to use Iview and preparing a post. Better is always good.
    But perhaps that will not affect you or many others.
    anyway,
    To search similarities in writing and filmmaking is stretching the argument bit far.
    Everything depends on individuals understanding. If you think PFC is judgemental site and its judgements are like final verdict you (word you is in general use) will be disturbed whenever a film of your liking has got some disliking by others. If you understand PFC as a forum where you can avail opportunity to produce your views and may be counter views then you will not be emotionally disturbed. as a post is just an excuse to touch a film. Post may cover all the things about a film or may just indicate about few of the things. It depends on authors mood, time availability etc.
    Its not done for professional purpose. Those who have to make it a profession or those who are associated with writing profession at present may behave differently, but they should have wisdom to understand over all scenario.
    Certainly there may be detailed posts about many films but then its individual’s prerogative to select the way of description.
    For example I will not write about small canvassed films like I will be writing about Pyasa, Mughal-i-azam, Guide, Kaghaz ke phhul, Omkara etc. They cover vast horizon and willbe treated accordingly.
    Comment section is present for making a post complete by other’s comments.
    Many profound commentators are there who are not authors but who contribute in a post richly. Many have joined PFC through comment route only.
    They enrich the posts whereever they make comments.
    They talk about the matter.
    Every mature mind talk about matter and immature minds make vague comments with obscure meaning and thus waste time and energy of authors.
    Criticism has to be analysis.

    If you can contribute in the subject then do it and if your comment is more wise than the matter given in the post then people will read it themselve.

    Though at same time, Its also true that many authors dont like it if comment better than their posts are made, specially in their initial stage of writing.
    But slowly everybody starts understanding that its an interactive site, interaction is the top priority.
    People writing out of their passion towards cinema but doing other kind of jobs, cant always write PhDs on the films. and then films are subjective medium. One likes a film 100% others may like it 50%. Depending on their exposure in life also.

    and to say that please make a post is not to challenge but this way new authors are included.

    Thanks for your comment.

  28. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:33 am

    @Amit(14),
    thanks for your comment.
    This is the purpose, to relive memories of past viewings and to mention the films to those who have not seen them yet. :)

    and with this exercise many good and average and bad things of the discussed film/s come in open.:)

  29. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:40 am

    @Krishn(15),
    Thanks for comment.
    Anita Kanwar was fine physically but call it lackings of new director Amol Palekar or TV exposure of Anita Kanwar, she missed the opportunity to prove her acting skills at several places.
    Most important lacking was in the scene just before the climax, when Vikram Gokhle is going towards his vehical and suddenly he sees Anita Kanwar who is coming down from the hill side.
    When he enquires about her, she just destroyed the whole scene with her artificial acting.
    Though artificiality in acting is at present at several places. Thats why Nana Patekar inspite of his wrong dictions, remain the best actor in the film.

  30. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:40 am

    @Inca(16),
    ya lyrical dialogues were good.
    :)

  31. RK on March 19th, 2008 6:56 am

    @Krishn(18,19),
    When saw it first time in 1991-92 then this angle did not strike much. but after 2-3 years got to know something and recalled this film and this story which Vikram Gokhle says to Anita Kanwar at her home. When I saw it after few years again then I was knowing a real life story. This time I was curious to know , who is the writer. I saw Kamlesh Pande. His surname and possible belongingness to a particular city revealed everything to me.
    Sometimes people just insert real life incidences seen somewhere or heard somewhere.
    True when you are showing a person as DM then it looks bit unreal.
    Sanjay Dutt is again under scanner because of his new wife’s ambigous marital status. and here Vikram Gokhle was an IAS!
    Real event was happened differently.Even if film had shown him widower and thats why he does not want to mix up with other women it would have been more convincing angle.
    But film is working in an audio story telling style. Many things are assumed. Visually its like Malgudy Days pattern. Audience has to go with assumption of director. Its a city somewhere and its all happening there.

    If one is watching the film through the character of Anita Kanwar then audience may find a bit close association with the film as then content will bind the audience and visual presentation’s lackings may not affect.
    If anybody is watching it with detachment like any other film then obviously lackings will be clear and hence cinematically film will look average.
    This is subjective thing.

    @RK (13).
    I agree with most of the things you said. Except that IMHO writing and film-making both are expression of one’s creativity so may be I did not overdo the comparison.
    Yes, I did see post # 4 but may be it’s me who saw some sort of sarcasm in post # 3 and its entirely my fault if I read too much. Though I also saw post # 6 :-).

    Let me generalize here, I think people do tend to associate emotions to written word and interpret in some other ways than it was really meant at times.

    Keeping all this aside, I personally like to read your posts and PFC in general. All said and done, here I find people who really care about cinema though their thoughts may not always align with mine and I am completely comfortable with it. I think that’s the whole purpose of this forum.

    If I always agree with everything then I am not adding anything and if I always disagree then I am not required :-)

  37. vishesh on March 19th, 2008 8:58 pm

    All my earlier posts did not talk about the movie at all :-(

    I had seen the movie long back and alas, just once. I always remember it as one of those movies that have a warm feeling to it jisme end mein sab thik ho jaata hain! I need to watch it again soon

    One of the cool things was the lyrical dialogue. I was so taken by it that I tried talking in that form for couple of days and realized soon that life is not always a poetry and Main shaayar hi nahin.

    Amol has always been a great actor and he is marvellous director too. I think one major fault in Paheli was lack of intensity in the tension/conflict. It was beautifully shot and very underrated musical score.

  38. aditi on March 20th, 2008 1:46 am

    I think, it was a nice film…nothing more..But I need to step in for RK — His posts are very informative..in fact, he digs into long lost details and brings them to the fore…Thanks RK…Keep up the good work!!!

  39. RK on March 20th, 2008 2:44 am

    @Vishesh(36),
    Everything is game of one’s life time only. In long term its peice of art which is appreciated but in short term artist is also appreciated.
    and for the sake of this short term or say life span of an alive person, if there are nobody who could see, analyse or evalute artist’s work then very few artists will be there in the world who will still create something and very few out of that selection will be there who will be able to bring progress in their own work because they are self evaluator and cant repeat themselve or their own creation.
    There is always a very thin line between right and wrong.
    Fortunate will be those artists whose works are analysed properly in their early stage of creative phase as then creator can bring justified progress in his creations.
    Criticism covering small statements - “its bad” is wrong and product of one’s mental sickness.
    Healthy mind analyse the things and brings all aspects of the creation and describe in detail in very first analysis.
    “Its good” is also not very supportive thing for an artist but its like neutral thing. He cant assess whether a admirer has said it just to keep him going on or its a formality. “Its good” also does not help much creative journey of an artist.
    “Whats good” - this description helps an artist as then he is able to analyse himself what he had created and what these people are finding good. Does it match with his own imagination.
    Its a mystery but there will be many who always have an eye to catch a good creation. They cant make themselve that creation but they can identify and differentiate between good and average and good and bad creations.
    If a good creation is like a piston then a good analyser is a cavity in which this piston can be inserted properly. Cavity allows this creation to come and enter inside. Analyser is acceptor and he accepts an artist and his existence and helps him to create better.
    Art will die when there will be no analyser left.
    Or it will go back to stage of kids creations level. colourfull, but where progress is horizontal and not vertical.
    It does not stimulate mind further.
    Are you aware of tussle between Kapil Dev and Lala Amarnath in a cricket match where former was playing and Lala Amarnath was a commentator.
    That is a good example.
    Though at same time its very common to see even in very unusual scientific fields especially in productions that people not having formal and systematic training have got a skill to tell what is good quality. They have something in them to identify this quality.
    Artists can not remain happy if nuances in their work are not caught and appreciated.
    —–
    Hope you are aware of an anecdote about Pakiza and Kamal Amarohi.
    Its said that during the climax of the film there is a scene where Meena Kumari’s doli is going from the Kotha and camera goes and fixes at a girl standing behind a pillar. and it remains there for few seconds. She sees the Meena Kumari’s Doli.
    Editor wanted to cut this scene as he thought it adds no value to the over all scene as she is unknwon character and perhaps shown first time. But Kamal Amarohi insisted on keeping the scene and said that may be someone in audience w’d understand what I wanted to say.
    film was released and after some time Kamal Amarohi got a letter from an audience where person wrote that he was very much impressed by this particualr scene and he thought SHE IS THE PAKIZA ( apure one) as she represents an innocent girl trapped there at Kotha. Will she get a future or will her purity will be ruined under the lust of men? Man asked Kamal Amarohi to send him still photograph of that scene.
    Its mentioned that Kamal Amarohi not only sent still of that scene but sent him a personal certificate that whenever whereever Pakiza is running in any cinema hall, he will be allowed to see it freely all his life.

    Rule is simple. make a proper use of analysis. Dont make it criticism expanded in 2-3 words “Its bad”. It doies not help anyone but harms the artist. Tell him whats bad and tell at same time whats good also. Then there is no need for a creator to point out that create that creation which is discussed.
    Analyst not necessarily need to write a novel to analyse a novel though if he writes a novel then its good but its not mendatory.
    Quality control guys are different than production guys most of the time.

    @Aditi (38) Thanks for your comment.
    “It was a nice film … nothing more.”
    Thats one line summary of an analysis.:)
    agreed to this concise and precise statement:d

    @Vishesh(37),
    When you will watch a film as a grown up audience and when you know more about cinema then certainly film will have slightly different impact from what you had got when you saw it years ago. and after reading so much about film your sense will be extra alert.

    This time also end impression can be same but journey may have different experience because now many weaknesses of the film will be clearly visible to you. It may be like a journey on a road which has spead breakers or its broken at places and you get jerks but when you reach at destination you are filled with satisfaction as inspite of jerks based journey you enjoyed it.

    now when analyse one cant ignore these jerks, at same time one cant ignore the end impression also.
    now its individual’s choice how he takes this analysis. Fans will object pointing towards jerks but they were facts. Very few will be agree with a proper analysis, because
    (1)not all can go through the film through memory and they are living with end impression. (if end is well then all is well)
    (2) Those who were in a position to suffer because of jerks will say journey was pretty ordinary rather a painful.

    Hope you enjoy the journey of TSRHJ again and make a comment about your journey.:)

    @Palash(35),
    Perhaps you will not understand else you could have understood by now.
    Why I should spoil a festive season for you?

    I just read Medha’s post. You were very fast. at 11 am post is made and at 11.08 you not only read the post but make a comment also. Perhaps you were sitting beside Medha when she was typing the post.;)
    More on this aspect sometime mid of next week, If you still dont understand.;)
    It has always been very simple that there is always a place for anyone who can do. But when people dont have belief in self then they take resort of any kind of trick, and good or bad ways dont affect them.
    This is wisdom:d.
    Its a new change at PFC. Now success at any cost may prevail here also no matter what kind of path has been taken.

    anyway regarding Medha’s post-
    She has got language and knows how to express.
    Regarding film-
    I could not see what different points or additional points she had in mind. Did she make any different points?;)
    Otherwise
    Dil ko khush rakhne ko ghalib ye khayal achcha hai.

    Seriusly I was expecting that when she had so much “show” on the film then she would be capable to make SOMETHING, analysing completely the film.
    But its not the case.

    and if father will not represent his generation then whose generation?
    what about friend of Anita Kanwar’s father, who is going to become a grand father. He does not represent older generation?
    what about Vikram Gokhle’s character? what he represents?
    where he is in the post?
    .
    Anita Kanwar at the verge of breakdown? where? was it in same film?
    Younger brother interpretation seems faulty. He was a duffer in the film and not mere innocent. He was without any stand of his own. Everybody was driving him. He had no personality and he was happy in following others. How such a person can dream? His dreams will be weak.
    He had no desire to fulfil his dreams.
    He believes every other person and its not only Barishkar. He follows what his so called girl freind says. he follows what his elder brother says. he follows what his sister says or his father says.
    Is it innocency?
    Characters represent the characters of real life or their situations represent the situations in real life?
    any person who actaully manages to reach us in those difficult times—
    we dont call them like angels or harbingers.

    Sorry But did not find any additional and new thing in her post, which could justify her claims.

    After claming she will not write story she is actually describing story only. and premise of the film is not different.

    Though if she was making it first then it was fine but after making so big noise this is not a post which suggests that ok ya film was this.

    Though at same time, its not necessary you and her to go with my impression there are comments to support her views about film.

    we have slightly different views about a film and slightly different way to describe the film.

    where is the film there? visual scenes and their importance? something which could have made her post as different?

    Is “Justified” word towards the film gets full respect through that post? ;)

    But never mind. Its subjective issue.

    Have a nice time during Holi.@};-

    @ RK
    after reading 41 and 39,
    Yes, I whole heartedly agree that watching a movie is like a journey and mostly its cathartic for me.

    Also, on the analysis of a creation, is creation always suppose to venture into new frontiers ?
    Can something be created that audience laps it up but it does not break any new grounds and still be considered an achievement ?
    Is creation always limited by criticism, what if it is really ahead of time ?
    Folklore says that Sholay was panned by all critics but now it ranks high in cinematic achievement.

    I don’t know if these are right questions or they even merit an answer.

    And yes, it takes lot of maturity and understanding of the craft to comment on any creation. Its a symbiosis of critic and creator that lends to appreciation and recognition of great piece of work. I believe that most of the critics in India tend to get jingoistic when it comes to movie reviews. As Farah Khan famously says “all critics are retarded”.
