Those were the days. Those were the times…

Those were the days. Those were the times. I am sure that in this “fast-food” times of today’s Cinema world, many film/music makers do not even have the willingness of thinking over these two lines. The time when art was worshipped. The time when artists were openly praised/encouraged for their good works. And the time when most of them had healthy relationships, so much so that they even credited their good works, to those who had contributed in the making. Ofcourse this giving-credit was confined to close circle of friends and not to media, for the want to publicity ( unlike the current trend ). Everybody had so much confidence and talent that they need not get any certificate from the media or the people. All they were interested in was to give maximum to the people.
Today’s cine-world is full of backbiting, bitching, insecurity, sucking-licking each other and what not. I am sure that many filmy people will agree with me, that most of the guys in this world, in fact, go uneasy/mad if they do not get to do all of this. If they cannot open their mouth of worms in the day, they cannot put more shit into their mouth. It has become a habit and a way of life for most.
I can see that people are getting excited for the “kind” of cinema that is produced and say that wah wah – it is better than the 80’s and 90’s for sure ! But at what cost ? Is it really good ? Does one movie/song of today be consistently good, all the 3 hours/5 minutes ? There are sparks of brilliance here and there, but then I think that most of them are stuffed into the readers/audience minds through the media. People all over go ga ga over something and the film-circle or a few review-readers think that what a piece of art !! Can we be really serious and truthful to ourselves ?
Here comes one fantastic anecdote, which makes me wonder, if ever the Industry today could have a working environment like that. If ever we audience would get to see , a work of pure art. If ever our hearts are brimmed to the full, with emotions that cannot be explained.
Hridaynath Mangeshkar has put life into this show on Zee Marathi, which has professional singers ( a few of them are simply superb and they can screw the happiness of the so called top singers of today’s cinema…but that is a different story :-) ). He has so many anecdotes ( razor sharp memory ) and his knowledge about poetry, literature, music, art is simply mindblowing. He explains how were those days and times when artists had such great friendships, that they were involved in each other’s works, seamlessly. No sense of pride or envy !! just pure madness and happyness.

I have one such incident….that one very famous song “Ye Zindagi Usi Ki Hai Jo Kisika Ho Gaya” , the mukhda of which C Ramchandra was making, while sitting on one bench in Nana Chowk ( a place in Pune ). He had already created a few mukhdaa’s. That same time Roshanlal, which means Hritik Roshan’s grandfather, came there to take a date of Didi ( lata Mangeshkar ), for singing a different song. Then he made some changes in the mukhada. Antaraa was created by him entirely. This I have seen with my own eyes. He (Roshan) did not tell all this to anybody. Nobody in the industry knows this. Only a few people like me, both of them (CR & Roshan) are not there, one is Didi and CR’s assistant, who is also no more alive. Such a famous song “Ye Zindagi Usi Ki Hai Jo Kisika Ho Gaya” ! And such was their great friendship. Those were different times !

u have left me wanting for more…
hey kai karto kcp :(
awesome. like always!
kcp- that was interesting again.keep sharing these pearls of filmy knowledge with us.Yes un dinon ki to baat hi alag thi.
There are so many instances where artists (even legendary artists ) used to work without credits (mostly in background, without even letting know the industry they are involved for friendly reasons)
One can recall Bimal Roy’s Devdas anecdote where Salil Chowdhury found a knock at the door at 2 AM and found Bimal Roy and Sachin Dev Burman at the door. Bimal da was nervous and unhappy with the background score of Devdas while the film was just three days away from the release.. Salil Chowdhury worked days and nights before the release on terms that he would not get credit and doing it only for his relationship with Bimal da.. Hence went uncredited.
Heard of some shocking and surprising instances specially in Hrishi da directed films (Post Bimal Roy era) (as usually Hrishi da used to decide who should get credit no matter whoever worked on the project to whatever extent. Most of the times more than a few people got involved in writing while the credits would go to most needy in the team.. )..
those were the days….. I am sure (hope) even today there are incidents that goes unnoticed..
