To Play Up To Media Or Not!!

This is a post, I did in 2004, in another yahoogroup. Since I have warmed up to the media, but may make for some discussion—Vivek

Hi Folks,

My own reaction with the press is shades of grey. An incident when I
was 17 developed it all. I was in Mumbai near Mantralaya (the Central
Secretariat) when I see this female journalist slap a cop on duty and
the next day the daily screams “Cop slaps journalist.” Since that day
I decided that I would not really care about them since their powers
are all self assigned and for the most part they are on minimum wages
and maximum ego trip. Over the years though I have mellowed and feel
that there are bad apples in every field and for the most part they
(journalists) are hardworking and honest professionals who go about
their job in a diligent manner.

The purpose of this build up is the constant tug of war that goes on
between film personalities and journalists. One blaming the other ,
but one also responsible for the bread and butter of the other.

So when Aamir takes on journalists :

Don’t be fooled. Care he does!! a lot!! This is the same Aamir Khan
who denied that he was married when QSQT was released and later said
he did that because his image (key word here) might get affected
(hello former wifey if these are not tell tale signs of an upcoming
divorce what are?)

This is also the same Aamir Khan who walked out of DARR beacause he
feared his IMAGE (ahem !!) might get affected if he is beaten up by
Sunny on screen…..and we know who go beaten up and who got Really !!
beaten up.

Both Aamir and AB have at the height of their careers told the press
to go take a ride, well boys’s that is all ok, but you have used them
to get there in the first place and will use them in the future when
you’ll are going through a lean phase or when promoting your upcoming
films.

Also film folks have this perfect guise for all they wrong about “we
were misquoted.” We in SAAFA have been at the receiving end too when
a couple of our beneficiaries went back to Mumbai and misrepresented
SAAFA and then conveniently said “we were misquoted.” Knowing the
journos who interviewd them I can confidently say that they were not
misquoted at all. The journalists merely wrote what they were told!!

Bottom line- Press and Films, both need each other, neither can do it
on their own.

Finally a journalist had the courage to say what everyone knows:

ASH cannot act!! To top it all she is given these multiple
challenging roles which make it even more difficult for her. Her
acting talents are the creation of a strong PR machinery!!
