Good effort Krishna!
No depth in the article.
It’s like a restaurant menu card.
ironical
i know none to next about telgu cinema
except being familiar with
maniratanm, kamal hasan, rajnikanth
because they had there stint with hindi
.
i don’t understand tamil
i don’t understand korean
still i watch korean films because they come with subtitles
and enough reviews are available to decide and choose
.
for full entertainment and zero content
i depend upon david dhawan and alike in bollywood
except that i watch only quality films
.
i am ready to watch some quality work of tamil cinema
is there any “quality” Telugu cinema that a non-telugu speaking audience could relate to? I mean something that stands out like some well made Malayalam or Bengali film that transcends regional boundaries?
The ones I have seen appear as over the top and silly as the vast majority of Tamil and Telugu films so never bothered with it…
Nice info.
thanks
@ Krishna…Nice article…and i am happy that you have stuck to directors who have made more than 10 movies rather than go by the current pulse and start ratind directors like Sekhar, Yeleti, Bommarillu guy, etc…
K.Vishawanath for me too hands down…
@SJ..yes man there are many…as Varun was saying the other day watch ” Gamyam”..its a travel movie..a rareity in Telugu Cinema..watch ” Anukokonda Okka Roju”…Nishikanth Kamat was bowled over after watching this and couldnt stop raving for 2-3 days :-)…Bommarillu is quite good as well…watch “Aithe”..though it got dubbed in Hindi as “50 Lakhs”…for somethign differe..atleast on the effort side watch ” A Film By Aravind”…well to start off..watch these and then we will talk
@Ravi
I delibarately wrote the article in order to be a kind of Restaurent Menu.
good effort Krishna!
it’s ironic though to see KRR (sigh!) besides getting a place on this list also gets three paragraphs devoted to him while the great K.V.Reddy’s illustrious career is told in two simple lines.
IMNSHO, K.V.Reddy, H.M.Reddy, L.V.Prasad, Bapu, Jandhyala, they all deserve a post each.
@SJ
there are many telugu films which have universal appeal.Instead of jumping into the classics i recommend you to watch films like Aithe,Anukokunda Oka Roju,Anand,Godavari,A film by Arvind,etc…
@wb
Many disagree with me on ‘K.Raghavendra Rao’,only one thing which impresses me about KRR is that he elevated Telugu Cinema.I don’t like many of his films.
May be i could have written much about K.V.Reddy.
@ Krishna i was gonna mail you in private..but, now that wb bhai has brought it up…
I would have preferred( again..its my personal opinion)..you write a bit more about each of the directors..maybe you could have made this post in a 2 part or 3 part affair…nevertheless, it is an important topic..
@SJ
you can try some films of RGV like Shiva,Deyyam,Kshana Kshanam,Anaganaga Oka Roju and the best of all GAYAM(RGV discontinued this film as Sanjay Dutt was sent to Jail).It would have been the biggest blockbuster if RGV completed it
I always get confused between HM Reddy and KV.Reddy.. what was Bhakta Potana about?
@Krishna..
why doesnt RGV find a place in your list? afterall..he hasnt given many bad films in telugu as he has in Hindi…any specific reasons?
@OM and wb
I wrote the article in a jiffy as just to represent my opinion on the top telugu directors of Telugu Cinema.
Many telugu moviebuffs(So called) call Rajamouli,V.V.Vinayak,Puri Jagganath,etc.. as the great directors of Telugu Cinema.
The only directors who show promsie are Sekhar Kammula,Chandrasekhar Yeleti and Sekhar Suri(dubious distinction)
@OM
RGV made good films,if it was top 15 or top 20 he would have been in the list.
Rajamouli, VV Vinayal, Puri have become “checklist” director..every top actor today from Mahesh to NTR to Chiru and sons have to work with them and mark “checked”…no wonder every movie of theirs look the same
Well i disagree with you Mr OM, i feel they are the talented directors but you know what…you got to blame the audience. Puri,rajamouli (Not sure on VV)are sensible filmaker, but he is fixed with formula..i.e (sucess gurantee). When stakes r high obviously they got to lick da notes rather passion.
@krishna
Sorry mate, it a boring peice of article. Its like reading an abstract on constipation.
Reason being, there is nothing to rave about telugu films except a few. I like rajebdra prasad kind of movies.
This is carried on by allari naresh..i agree they r vulgar..but its decent 2 me.
Blaming the audience is the easiest route out my friend…never did i mention that they do not have passion…off course they do, else they wouldnt be in the business…
“Its like reading an abstract on constipation.”
Please try to put in a better way…just like every movie that comes out cannot be a masterpiece, evry article written cannot be a masterpiece…plus i thought this article was important for a lot of non-telugu’ites to geta quick look at most talented, important directors in the industry..
well we have different opinions, so lets leave it at that..btw this article talks about directors and not actors..
yes..my introduction to telugu movies was through Rajendra Prasad movies..and it was a damn good introduction..
K.Balachander too has directed good number of Telugu movies.
I would have loved to see Krishna Vamsi’s name in place of K.Raghavendra Rao.
thank god for not including puri jagannath or ravi teja in the list.
Why is Singeetham not in the list? he made the first watchable scifi movie Aditya 369.
And not including RGV is a big blunder too!!!
but a good list to begin with and we can expand more with good directors of the naxal cinema of 1980s and their works
“Repati puovurlam”, “Adavi thevatilu” etc. some really hard hitting stuff from them those days.
@Jaiganesh…Ravi teja? did he direct anything? He is an actor…Singeetham..yes..he should have been here…
Some brilliant articles written by our very own wb bhai on Singeetham
http://passionforcinema.com/master-of-the-arts/
http://passionforcinema.com/master-of-the-arts-ii-singeethams-films-an-analysis/
http://passionforcinema.com/master-of-the-arts-iii-the-crazy-kamal-connection/
http://passionforcinema.com/master-of-the-arts-iv-the-crazy-kamal-connection-ii/
A very crappy list. Some are good in the classical sense, as in, they have made good movies in the past. Dasari cannot direct a movie to save his life. K.R.Rao is too busy with lead actresses’ navel to do anything else.
RGV should definitely be on the list among the top 5. Somebody asked about Telugu movies which one could watch, watch ‘Anukokonda Oka Roju’ which was a very serious film made into a comedy called ‘Sunday’ in Hindi, utter crap.
Also watch ‘Aithe’. A brilliant film. My favorite directors in Telugu would include Yeleti Chandrasekhar, the director of the two movies I just mentioned.
Sekhar Kammula is also a nice director with pretty decent sense of screenplay. The less we talk about Puri Jagannath, Rajamouli and VV Vinayak, the better we would be.
Om and others - thanks for the Telugu reccos… will watch and then we will talk
@Srikanth Reddy
Puri is a very good writer and could be a good director,but directors are now acting as business people,they are just concentrating on the financial aspects .
RGV directed some good Telugu films and some of them are..
Shiva,
Kshana Kshanam ,
Gaayam ,
Anaganaga Oka Roju,
You want RGV to be placed in the list with those stalwarts ??
@Krishna…can totally understand your point..it is a very tough decision to put RGV in that list of directors..we may argue and this would go on..but, end of it..it is a touch and go…
Why i would have put RGV is only cause the different genres of movies that he had made and made a mark in it..which not many directors were able to do…
Krishna,
Probably T.Krishna should be among top directors list though he didn’t make hundreds of films like KRR or DSR. But whatever films he made ,all of them quality films. “Pratighatana” is classic.
Btw, If anybody interested in serious telugu film ,check “Ankuram” (Cast: OMPURI ,Revati)..
Thanks
Manne
@Manne
I was unable to recollect T.Krishna.He is definetely one of the best directors of Telugu Cinema.I hail from the native place of T.Krishna i.e Ongole.
11. T.Krishna
@krishna
Ongole lo putti,mana T.krishna nii marichipooyaavaa..entha pani cheesevuu babai
I am fond of director Vamsi movies, he has dat midas touch of story telling and characters are novelish…but latley ayana mind dobbindii..like RGV and krishna vamsi..der is some prob wid dese guys..may be mid-life crisis.
me too frm ongole..but settled in hyd.
Krishna, nenu Telugu vaadine. And its nice to see a post on Telugu movies here. Comming to your list, KRR and Dasari did make many good movies in recent past, but of late they have lost it totally. Even Pandurangadu, looked like a Mallu soft porn movie for most of it’s first part,and sadly was nowhere near the original Panduranga Mahatyam. Though KRR is known for his commercial masala flicks, he directed many decent story oriented movies in his early days like Jyothi, Aame Kadha,Prema Lekhalu, Nindu Noorelu, Padhaharella Vayasu and in fact most of them did not really have the standard KRR trappings. I thought Sundarakanda was well directed too, before David Dhawan made such a rotten mess out of it in Andaz.
Some directors i would include
A.Kodandarami Reddy- He was responsible for making Chiranjeevi a superstar. But at the same time he directed some really good movies like Abhilasha, Vijeta, Challenge, Pasivadi Pranam which though were in the commercial format, were leagues ahead of the standard masala movie.
Vamsi- Though his recent attempts have been pathetically bad, i would still put him for his earlier works like Anveshana, Ladies Tailor, SKML Recording Dance Troupe, April 1 Vidudula. Anveshana to date remains one of the best who dunits i have seen, and Ilayaraja’s background score was haunting to the core. And very few directors could capture the raw, earthy humour of the Godavari districts the way Vamsi did. He was a master of characterization. As also the innovative camera angles and his wonderful usage of songs. B
Ram Gopal Verma- If not for anything else, just the movie Shiva. For me that was not a movie, it was something that turned Tollywood around. Fight scenes were never the same, after Shiva, gone were those endless fights where 1 hero bashed up 20 goons, without a single scratch. And Kshana Kshanam to date remains one of the best thriller comedies. Even Gaayam one of his best gangster movies.
Of the recent directors i would put Shekar Kammula, Shekar Suri, Radhakrishna aka Krish( the man behind Gamyam), Ravi Babu( Allari and Anasuya), Chandrashekar Yeleti, Neelakantha in the list.
V.Madhusudhana Rao indeed made some of the best movies in Telugu. Apart from the movies you mentioned his other great movies include Veerabhimanyu, Bhakta Tukaram, Manushulu Marali. Interestingly most of the Telugu remakes of Hindi movies he directed like Kannavari Kalalu( Aradhana), Vichitra Jeevitham( Daag), Mallepoovu( Pyaasa) did not do well at the BO.
I think one of the biggest problem with the new breed of Telugu movie directors is consistency.
In the 90’s there were two brilliant talents, one was C.Umamaheswara Rao who made a great debut with Ankuram, one of the best Telugu movies made,but after that none of his movies really were up to any standard.
Another such director i can recall is Uppalapati Narayana Rao, who made two really good movies Jaitrayatra and Rakshana, but after that his movies were downright pathetic.
Even in recent times we have seen directors like Karunakaran( Tholi Prema), Jayant Paranje( Preminchukundam Raa), Venky( Kabaddi Kabaddi), Suryaprakash( Satyam) promising a lot, but fizzling out later. It seems as if they were saying “Ok we made one great movie, so just chill out and relax”.
Krishna Vamsi started off with a bang with Gulabi, and like RGV he started a revolution of sorts, bringing a movie with totally fresh treatment, in a Tollywood otherwise stinking with outdated stuff. And he did shine for a while with Ninne Pelladutha, Sindooram, Anthapuram and Murari. But after that again he just seems to have lost it.
Many are critical of Rajmouli, but honestly i think we need to give him his due. He is honest that he wants to give entertainment, and if you evaluate on that factor, most of his movies are quite good time pass. I really did enjoy Sye, though the story is quite outlandish( rugby match in Hyderabad!!!, gimme a break). And his recent movie Vikramarkudu was worth a watch too. Basically you just need to go to his movies expecting some time pass stuff, and on that count he scores.
The fact that you left out Vamsi (not krishna vamsi….i am talking about the one who directed ‘ladies tailor’, ‘april 1 vidudala’..) and included people like reghavendra rao show how little you know about the Telugu film industry.Just because raghavendra rao directed 100 movies doesn’t make him one of the top 10…..he is infact one of the worst in telugu…on the other hand, if you say he got his place in the list because of his commercial success, kodanda rami reddy is far more successful in terms of the money that his movies made…please..please…please do your reasearch before coming up with such lists….

Neelakantha
Ram Gopal Varma
Teja
Indraganti Mohana Krishna
Sekhar Kammula
WB…
K.Vishwanath is a suspect???
wb..when you have sekhar in your usual suspects list..why not Yeleti?
Varun, absolutely - as an usual suspect he’s someone who I’d expect to be there on the list and would be surprised if he ain’t.
OM, chandu’s two *creative* hits were supervised by gunnam gangaraju whilst his third movie, a dud, had him flying solo; res ipsa loquitur, what say?
This article shows the ignorance of the author. How can u include K. Raghavendra Rao and other idiots in this list who just made stupid movies with lots of sex and fights and double meanings ? Seems this ignorant author has grown up only watching those meaningless masala movies. To be frank, this author has very poor taste and has no knowledge about cinema. Where is B. Narasinga Rao ? Do you really know what art cinema is ? Even K. Raghavendra Rao’s bhakti cinemas are full of songs, fights, and exposing. Idiotic authors like you should not attempt such rankings, only knowledgeable persons should do.
@WB,
Y.Veerendra Nath
Gollapudi Srinivas ???
Did they ever direct a movie? YVR provided stories for many Chiru-AKR movies, but thats it. Srinivas’s demise is a great loss as per what I keep hearing about him. But then we have to remember that he never donned the director’s cap.
Teja and IMK in the usual suspects list? Teja IMHO is nothing better than SS Rajamouli and IMK is just a newbie. We can wait for more of his movies as of now. But, I admit to have liked both of his movies and have a ticket booked for his latest release for tomorrow
But on a lighter vien, who else did you miss out man
Your list covers almost everyone who has directed 10+ movies
Kishor @ 42,
Cool it buddy. Point heard. Just refer to what Ratnakar has said @32. Now tell me who has been ignorant
Art cinema is not the only form of cinema that classifies as classic. Neither Missamma nor Shankarabharanam were slated to be art movies. But dont they list in the all time classics in telugu?
Vittalacharya will never find a place in a list if I go by what you say. Why, for that matter, KV would also never would. But, we all know where they stand.
By record, it does not make sense to consider immediate past/Present. Does it??
@ Kishor
You seem to have a very good language to comment on others,i choose the other way …
->I am Ignorant
->I am an Idiot
->I have grown up watching masala movies
->I have a poor taste and has no knowledge about cinema.
My doubts..
->Does a movie becomes bad if it contains Sex,fights,songs,etc…
->I started watching films which are mass masala,etc.. ,i feel that every film lover will start like that.Did you directly jump to Art films?
->I am an idiotic author ,then you give the list buddy,everyone in PFC will see it as Bhagavadgita .
->You are calling the list of directors which i mentioned as ‘Idiots’,Mind your language,you don’t even have the right to talk about them
…………..
Grow Up! Think twice before commenting on someone in this way.
…………..
mindtentative:
>>>Y.Veerendra Nath.
Yes, he directed two movies before he moved on to making TV movies. Having known him and worked closely with him, I have had the opportunity of observing him in action, and hence stand by my statement.
>>>Gollapudi Srinivas!
No, he has been taken away before he could finish his first movie. But again, I was blessed to meet him when he was burning with passion about becoming a director. I have had the privilege of reading one of his scripts. What could have been is anyone’s guess. But again, based on what I’ve seen, heard and experienced, I still stand by my statement.
And IMO, Teja is a genius who went astray and IMK is a genius whose brilliance is yet to be discovered. That said, this is MY list
the elite readership agrees or not.
>>> Your list covers almost everyone who has directed 10+ movies
Good one, but not true. DNR’s and ilk have no place on my list.
Krishna// All the criticisms aside, this post has a great premise, not unlike some other posts on your blog. For the next round, please curb your enthusiasm to finish the post in a jiffy (^15) and you have a winner
@krishna
I must say, im liking your post now. Some including me has bashed it,
But, forgive my ignorance i wud say dis post gave us a plat form to discuss on our own telugu filmakers which is a good thing for us. Why is dat Singeetham sreenivas not mentioned by any..hes Indian Gerorge lucas man.
Srikanth Reddy Sanagala: Suggest you read the comments again. Also, Singeetham’s work has been analyzed in detail on PFC. Refer to OM’s comment #23 for pointers.
@Srikanth Reddy
I have great respect for ‘Singeetham sreenivas’,i bet if it was top 15 then he would definetely be there,all might be in the impression that i like KRR a lot,but its the opposite,but why i mentioned in the list is explained ….
@wb
I dont write seriously in my blog,first i just used to give the star rating to the movies,one of my friend like you suggested me to add some text,so i just add some stuff,but some articles and reviews were written seriously.I will try to write good articles in my blog too
Hey all…it would be a wonderful exercise if some/all of you can submit some articles on Telugu cinema via Iview…This discusiion s going pretty well..and am sure more articles about telugu cinema would generate more such discussions..what say?
Varun..where is your Gamyam article?
OM
Yeh weekend tak post karonga…

I want to become hero. But I see there are only actors sons as heros. No one is given opportunity. Do director is brave enough to give opportunity for new heros
