NO SMOKING…Twenty four days of shoot over…

Hi Oz, Sangeeta and other cine fanatics at the PFCI know am late in posting the details about my experiences on the sets off NO SMOIKING due to lack of time and somewhat crazy shooting schedule of oursbut I am well aware that the insights is being provided to you each day by AK and the TRIDEVS (Manjeet, Kartik and Sumeet) from PFC.

Day before morning we completed the twenty-fourth day out of the stipulated forty-five days of the shooting schedulealmost sixty-five percent of the film in over.

Twenty- four days of shooting has been quite somethingits been crazyits been excitingits been exhilaratingits been enlighteningits been frustratingits been chaoticits been a roller coaster its been sleepless. in Bombay but most of it has been a pleasure what the heckwe have completed sixty five percent of the film in twenty-four daysand completed the way we wanted to dothe way AK wanted it to doalmost done with the street sequence completed the hospitalthe most difficult of it, Ks House done restaurant almost done Alex portionalmost done Abbass housedone AirportdoneKs office almost done

Past twenty-four shooting days, we shot amazing sequences/scenesthe two and a half minute sequence with the stead cama mother fucker of a sequencetook us almost six hours to pull it offa complicated movementeverything needed to coordinated precisely the actors, the background artist, vehicle movement, camera movement, minding of focus on the charactersabove all an actor had to change from one get up to anotherbody and soulin flat forty secondshow did we do itWe just did itthe camera team did itthe art team did itthe direction team did itwe just did it!

Another scene that makes the amazing shot scene list is the lovemaking scene between K and his wifeit had nothingstill it had everythingbeautifully shotkind of scene that lingers on ones mind and heart much after one has left theatrea scene that one dont mind paying 150 bucks to go and watch againjust that scene!

Last twenty-four days of shooting, the unit of NO SMOKING has been working their asses offday and nightmostly nightsall of them cast, the camera team, art team, the production team, make up artist, spot boys, light men…everybodyits a great unitand I am glad to be part of it.

The prime cast in the film has been a pleasure to work withJohn,Ayesha,Ranveer, Kikku, Joy, Mr.Gajraj Raoall of them have been greatespecially Johnhe is a rockstarthe guy never complains nor his people (Venky, his make up artist and Costume assistant Shubhra) we have been shooting crazy hourswe call him six in the morning he is thereseven o clock in the evening he is thereeleven thirty in the night he is therethree in the morning he is therenot just one daybut for as many days we required.shooting with uswhen he lands on the set he comes as John the actor not John THE STAR.It makes so much of a differenceit makes thing easier for AKand for usI rehearse lines with himand have realized he is a very intelligent manacting is not always about saying thing, its also about not sayingand he understands that.he works a lot on his characterdoesnt want to let go till he has got it rightvery passionate about his workHe listen to AK and AK listens to himwe all in the direction team are highly impressed by John and his attitude towards work and peopleAs an upcoming writer and film maker I would definitely like to work with him on my filmsome time in future, as and when it happensI would make it a point to convey him that.

Ayesha, Ranveer, Kikku, Joy and Mr.Gajraj Rao have been naturalthey have taken their characters to another levelthrough their improvisation and subtle nuancesa level that none of us had expectedin any script every character has a lifebut what transforms on the screen mostly depends on the actor and his performanceand what the above mentioned actors have done with their characters speaks volume about their tremendous talent. Watching Mr.Gajraj Rao or Gajju bhai for us, in the restaurant sequence was a sheer delightHe performance took the sequence somewhere else…it is our pleasure that he decided to be part of NO SMOKING.

The DOPRajiv Ravi and his assistants (Kalpesh, Pappu,Mahidhar,Suresh) have been greatwithout them it would not have been possible for us to shoot what we shot in the limited span of timeshot the way AK wanted it tothey have been through professionalsthey have never complained despite of the crazy hoursthey are always the first on seton occasions they have made me wonder about their call timeRajiv Ravi is greatunlike other DOPs he never looses his coolthe man is always smiling with our style of working where AK doesnt know his shots ten minutes before he actually shoots itany other DOP would have lost his coolhe never does in the entire unit, DOPs team is the only one who are constantly on their toes they never get a break before pack upif they are not shootingthey are lighting fro the sceneif we shoot for twenty four hoursthey are on their toes twenty four hours the entire team has been greatRajiv Ravi has been greatI am glad that he has agreed to do my film as and when it happens hope he doesnt change his mind.

Production Designer Wasik Khan and his team (Tariq, Punita,Deepak, Guddu) have been working their asses offThe film looks greatits mostly because of themthey did great on all the locationsspecially the Worli flat.

Our direction team (Dr. Gautam, Nitin,,Prashant,Shlok,Anshul,Abhishek ,Param, Rohit, Sunil) have all been greatalthough I have taken the junior ADs to task for their momentary lapse of concentration that keeps on happening every now and thenthey have all have been giving their bestits a great team its a great unit.

It is not that everything has been hunky dory on the sets of NO SMOKINGthere is also been problemsactors date hasslesfuck upsgoof upsin each department production, art, direction lots of itit reminds us. we are all humansnot god even he fucks up.

Did the second unit with Dr. Gautam and the first assistant Camera, Kalpesh and Pappu AK asked us to do itone and a half dayit was greatshot a lotshowed it to him the next daysome of the things he lovedsome he hatedI still stuck by what we shotits heartening to know the trust he has on ussometime scaryof letting him down hope I dontI wont.

Between these twenty four days of shoot. witnessed the arrival of TRIDEVs from PFC first Manjeetthen Kartik and Sumeetthey have been on the sets sincelove their enthusiasm for cinemabeen able to have some interaction with Manjeetnice guy has his head on his shoulders. doesnt bother usquietly keeps on observing and doing his thingtaking picscollecting his material for posts on the PFCit between devotes lot of time talking to the female members in the unitSummit and Kartiknot much interaction with Summitstill an enigmaHad limited interaction with Kartikvery enthusiastic and excited about the whole state of affairappreciate thaton occasions has been over excited while we have been in the midst of a shothad to request him politely to curtail his excitementhope he understandswe have used all of them to act in the film.

Coming to the man of the hourAKthe more I an associated with him, the more I start admiring him as a scriptwriter, a filmmaker, a boss and a buddy (I hate to admit thisnot for any other reason but just that AK would start boasting about it, and taking my casejokingly). Great film maker thrive in chaosAK excels in itThe clarity that he has in his vagueness is mind blowingsheer geniushe would be one of the best directors who knows how to get the performance out of actorsas a scriptwriter he knows when to detach himself from his written lineseven when he has to let go of some of the best dialogues in the filmhe doesbecause the scene works best without ithe allows his actors and technicians free handyet he knows where to draw the line without actors or technicians even realizing itlike all good director, he is also greedygreedy about his scriptgreedy about how he sees his filmgreedy about the performance that he wants from his actorsBut as a director he has an amazing qualityyou give him hundred rupees and tell himBoss you have to shoot this in that muchhe does ityou give him thirty rupees for the same sequencehe will do itgive him five rupees and tell him to shoot the same sequence he will do ityou give him no money and tell him to shoot the sequencestill he would do itand without the difference being visible on the screenthat is where he is just amazinghe doesnt make an issuean issuehe doesnt make anything an issuehe just workswe have so much to learn from himI have so much to learn from himAnd as John put it We learn so much each day from the people we work withwe do!

Twenty four days of shoot sixty five percent of the film already doneTwenty one day still remainingstill lots of work to be donethirty five percent still to be done We start shooting tomorrow six in the morning

Read Kartik posthe mentioned about my legendary lust for lustyeah buddyI doTHE GREATEST SIN IS GUILTSIN WHOLEHEARTEDLY!

crickey, i can see people from PFC organizing a ‘morcha’ for demanding to see the 65% of the movie now! cos whatever you guys write about the movie is just ‘wow’ ;)

anyway, it’s JA’s personality and charm that has gotten him this far and may now his acting in No Smoking get him further…..

  11. striker on December 2nd, 2006 10:25 am

meri weekend kya mast shuru hui hai.. thanks rajkumar for the detailed account from your end :)

rajkumar/anurag, have a question for you regarding the % of completion.. would looking at it from the perspective of “number of days complete” really be an accurate estimate? wouldn’t it be more accurate to rely on the number of pages in the script completed as opposed to the number of days? for that matter, if you were to compare the % of days complete to the % of script pages complete, would that be a good formula to use to verify if you are running ahead of, behind, or on schedule? (i’m sure the producers would like this)

i.e. if both percentages are equal, you’re on schedule, if % of days is more than the % of pages, you’re behind schedule, and if % of pages is more than % of days, then you’re ahead of schedule. maybe i’m just looking into it too much (being an engineer, sometimes the math-lover in me bursts out :-b ) and the two don’t have any relation whatsoever with each other… and i guess external factors (like adding/deleting scenes or dialogues, or if you don’t end up shooting on a day that you were otherwise scheduled) could throw off the figures a little.. meaning if there’s added scenes and dialogs that may require more time to setup and shoot, the number of days and the number of pages in the script could change. same goes with deletions.. maybe i’m just being a dumbass but i’m just curious :-?

Rajkumar u r spot on regarding Anurag sir. he is a magician. his shots, his improvisations, use of props, camera movements and script - simply outstanding. working with sir on Gulaal has been an enriching experience and i take this opportunity to thnk sir for taking me on the project.

anurag sir if u r reading this Milind Soman had called me up. he was trying to get in touch with u. take care.

n also i would luv to visit the sets of No Smoking, only with your permission. just wanted to say a hi to u and the gang.

  14. oz on December 2nd, 2006 12:14 pm

    - AK, We used to have plain yogurt mixed with salt and pepper during the college days with our drinks instead of the crap “chakhna”. Never had a hangover. Unfortunately no bar or restaurant serves that in California.

Again… I like the way the previews have been made up for Salam-E-Ishq… isn’t this the same movie that was rumored to have been copied from the script of Reema Katgi, who’s making Honeymoon Travels?

    - Rajkumar, what your plans after No Smoking?

  15. Anurag Kashyap on December 2nd, 2006 12:17 pm

i wrote the dialogues for honeymoon travels..my wife edited salaam-e-ishq..and two films are not the same..rumours are just that ..rumours..

anurag, “no smoking” is an eros production, and is set to premier at cannes?? :o PLEASE CONFIRM! and if true, tell me how to buy my tickets for cannes :D

    http://businessofcinema.com/index.php?file=story&id=1837

“Two productions are already underway, one of which titled No Smoking starring John Abraham. The movie is expected to be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2007.”

  20. Anurag Kashyap on December 2nd, 2006 9:06 pm

thats extremely presumptious of anyone to say the film will premiere at cannes until and unless they are talking about the market..

Hey Kikujzero…FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE! This is a very non malicious and freindly site where film lovers/cinephiles comment about FILMS!!!… this site deals purely with PASSION!!! for FILMS!!!… nobody gets personal here…i personally know rajkumar & COMPLETELY DISAGREE with whatever u have said about him… whatever problems u have with him, think u should confront him directly… this is not the place to BADMOUTH anybody…think raj pretty much KNOWS whats good or bad for him…Think your comment speaks a lot about YOUR OWN STATE OF MIND!!!
