Kamal Haasan’s Tamil remake of A Wednesday is ready for release. Starring Kamal (playing Naseeruddin Shah’s role) and Mohanlal (playing Anupam Kher’s role) here’s the trailer. Slick, sleek and with Kamal’s stamp on it. I didn’t understand a word of what they were saying, but damn! the heart kept beating hard throughout the preview!

Entirely shot on the RED One. Looks good on the small screen. Waiting to see how good it will look on the big one!
Oh Wow… also noticed – Music by Shruti Haasan
Looks good and captivating. Music by Shruti Hasan…she even conceptualized the music video of the film…Kamal Hasan’s other daughter choreographed the video!!!
She does have a talent in that field. I believe she sang one of the songs in the movie ‘Luck’…nice voice.
Forgive me if this is a silly question, but will this movie have the same impact on the tamil/malayalam audience? Terrorism hasnt really affected TN and Kerala the way it has affected Mumbai or the Northern region. Maybe A Wednesday did well just because it was well made, but just wondering…
Doubt that will factor. Roja and Bombay were huge hits. These national issues are felt strongly everywhere. Unfortunately I don’t know if I can say the same about farmer suicides or naxalbari. There were blasts in Coimbatore in 1998. The film is about common man’s helplessness, I’m sure everyone feels it. Kamal and Mohanlal will assure a big opening.
Even if you may not connect to the terrorism, which by the way I find very surprising in today’s time, the movie has a storyline that is very interesting. I am excited by just sight of Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal together on the screen. Ma kasam agar ek labz bhi samaj mein aaye to, lekin when has that become a factor in watching movies!
Its a very valid question. Struck me the day i heard it was being remade. Gotta just wait n watch.
I noticed they seem to have added a bit more background about Naseeruddin Shah’s character in this movie about the setting up of the place he operates from. Come to think of it, leaving that out of the movie and leaving it to the audience to decide what he did and how he managed to organize everything was a great move by Neeraj Pandey.
Film Title: Unnai (you) pol (like) Oruvan (someone) = (Someone like you)
Mohanlal: Hello
Kamal: Mr. I.G.R. Marar?
Nan sollarta konjum gavanama kelunga
(Listen to what I have to say carefully.)
I am sure you are aware of the power of state of the art plastic explosives
C4 inbanga. Anda madri bomb unga city la unj edatula vechirkein. Inaki sainkalam, sari aar maniki, thre will be many explosions in your city. Bye.
(They call it C4. I have 5 bombs of this kind in your city. This evening, exactly at 6, there will be explosions in your city. Bye)
Mohanlal: Hello?
Junior Cop: Romba short sir, trace panna mudiyalai. (Very short sir. Could not trace it.)
Mohanlal: Chennai la irukara ella police station num standby la irrukanam. I want 100% complaints. Aduta call avanteindu varumbothu ada trace chaide teranum. no more excuses. (Every police station of Chennai should be on standby. I want 100% complaints. When the next call from him comes in, it has to be traced at all cost. No more excuses.)
Naal sim card. Oru cell phone. Enta kuppanum shuppanum merati kariyam sadikyalam
4 sim cards. 1 cell phone. Any kuppanum shuppanum (damn lameass) could threaten to get their word done.

Mohanlal: Inda padata ella police station leyum Fax, ill, email
(This picture should be faxed, no, emailed to every police station.)

(Someone who did not prefer to say his name, got in touch with our channel by telephone and said this
sorry for being a pest but i think its “100% compliance” and not “complaints”…
Yenda kuppanum shuppunum ida seyamudiyuma Mr. Marar?
Can any kuppan or shuppan (lame/fool) do this Mr. Marar?
Oh teri, thanks for the transalation Sriram!
Looks bloody damn slick. Hope Kamaldoesnt go over-board. How cool would it have been to see mohanlal and kamal come face to face..not that they dont..but..wish they make more movies together. Thanks vijay for the tip
Hmm…maybe I should go to them with the idea of a desi version of Michael Mann’s “Heat”!
Mohanlal…like that Mallu base accent; in Company too…it kind of gives his charac a background…whether its Hindi or Tamil he is talkin in.
The set up of the police room and Vidya’s presence reminds me of the Bourne series. At just this level.
N it looks like the climax et al is going to belong to KH alone….
vidya? its Lakshmi
yes..its lakshmi….mix up
Better than the original.
The casting is a coup allright with Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal coming together- it should be a virutal treat and will ensure a good opening in South India ( with Eenadu the Telugu version- Venkatesh instead of Mohanlal also expected to get noticed ). As for the theme like Sriram has said there were blasts in Coimbatore ( Sriram it happened in 1996-97 ) and there have been the blasts in Hyderabad too ( 2007 ).Apart from that there has been the sporadic violence from time to time.Even as recently as in 2008 there were blasts in Bangalore. So all said and done- the topic is something people will surely relate to.Looking forward to this movie.
superb shot capture.
Naseer looked jaded, battle-weary and haggard( in A Wednesday).
Wouldn’t it’d be more fun if he dialed Dominoes & threatened them with a chees(y)bomb if his pizza was late?
Kamal Hassan looks corpulent, smug and well fed.
While in this Forum I’d like to raise a topic… how many of us do think that a lot of south indian flicks can do much bigger business by just adding subtitles and releasing it all over the country, within a few theatres or so … instead of a frame by frame remakes or a bad dubs? (I know we are instantly reminded of Ghajini and the up coming Wanted, but I can still think of a lot of movies, which cannot be frame to frame be re made with an all india concept, but still can be enjoyed by all, when still clear that this is Southie Flick with subtitles.. I think even the people involved would get their due..
if not cinema halls, then maybe the regional TV channels should air movies with the sub titles…
What thoughts???
Do you read minds? I was thinking the same thing today. Why, oh why can they not do that? I would take this to a larger level that all Indian movies need to do this.
@ Tejas :D:D:D … Guess everybody thinks like that somewhere…
The other day I was watching a telugu flick with sub titles… and felt I could convinently accept that okay Trisha is a south indian village belle, Mahesh babu is the hero, and the tone of the comedy is going to be like south indian movies.. and convinenetly watched it instead of seeing a frame to frame remake… with a lil more upmarket clothes but same scenes with Bobby Deol and Shriya … which did not make the cut at all, cuz it is pretentious…
To top that it also takes away the work that was put in by the original makers… so … instead of spending crores on remaking the movie, spend the money in marketing them (as discussed in another forum) and then release them … anywhich ways the folks who wont watch the sub titles version would not/will not see the dubbed version of the movie (e.g. Dasavtar, Dalpathi, Hindustani) … also with a dubbing and a frame to frame remake, the context can never set in with lifestyles being so different.. easier is to have the viewers mind already set that this is different lingo flick.. now just enjoy it…
and yes I agree about all Indian flicks… south was an example cuz there are so many movies being remade/dubbed from that Industry ..
that again goes back to our another problem of marketing the films. Like we don’t market ourselves beyond India and Indians. May be IIFA will do what it was intended to do.
To a lay man, IIFA looks more like an event management organisation that conducts awards around th world making sure the Indian Film Fraternity flies up and down, has fun and comes back … IPL seems to generate more awareness towards Indian cinema (strictly masala ones) than IIFA…
sleek as expected…I can see some female characters as well which were not there in the original…
hopefully they have drained out all the little silly things in the hindi one which was otherwise a gripping movie…now kamal hassan has to match naseer’s dialogue delivery…hmm excting…
did any south indian notice that mohan lal speaks tamil with a slight malyalee accent ? also why for gods sake why did kamal have to mouth those 2 dialogues in highly accented english :/
“Light” is an understatement.
Kamal has always heavily accented his English in all his films. From dialogues in Thevar Magan, Kuruthipunal, to Aalavanthan & Dasavatharam he has done it. Sounds corny.
But its Kamal. He can get away with it.
Lal plays a Malayali police officer something similar like company..
Having seen the source film already…. the remake didn’t give at least half the effect of the original. Casting is totally screwed here, I don’t want to start bitching about the film.
If one has not seen the original, UPO might bedazzle them. A gritty performance by Kamal, but I would go for A Wedndesday on any given day. A Wednesday packs a solid punch with mind-blowing performances from everyone. Sadly, UPO is kind-of bogged down with overhype (kamal & mohan lal man!!!) which fizzed out for me.
A Wednesday: 4.5/5
Unnai Pol Oruvan: 2.5/5
Just my opinion, so please dont get enraged ppl
