VANTAGE POINT: a brief note

VANTAGE POINT: a brief note

Caution: Spoilers Ahead

Vantage point is about assassination of American president and the coverage of this incident by eye of eight different people.

Before interval film shows incident with respect to a body guard, a tourist, a policeman, a terrorist, a suicide bomber, a little girl, a killer and a second body guard.

Concept and plot is good and for half of the film it maintains interest. But after creating interest when the film messes up with typical high dose hollywood action; it reasonably fails. When the film appears to be a mind exercising thriller; immediately it turns out to be formula one race. If the medium pace of film was maintained throughout the film then it might turned out to be a good suspense thriller. And suspense??? An average experienced English moviegoer can easily guess the suspense.

Vantage Point

Denis Quaid is good as usual. He has portrayed character of an honest but tired and going to be retired body guard. Forest Whitaker is excellent as tourist who shoots whole sequence on his handycam. All others are average.

Overall Vantage point is an average hollywood movie with good plot, things messed up and some good & bad moments.

Overall Grading: B

Its a ok film with good action made with good intentions… a very difficult task to achieve, especially when its narrated from these peoples POV using the same footage from different people’s perspective… A very difficult film…

Yeah, first part showing same incident by pov of different people - was quite interesting. but as per my opinion, action after interval spoiled the mood of the film

Well i personally thought that the idea was interesting but the director lost the plot somewhere…

I heard that this movie uses same technique as in Rashomon. Is it true? If yes how far it has succeeded?

I think Vantage point is a classic example of what an extraordinary trailer can do to an otherwise ordinary film. This film had such a fantastic trailer that I couldn’t wait for this film to be released. And what a disappointment it was.
The first half when the entire assassination scene is shown umpteen times just gets on the nerves. I could hear my entire theatering saying “Oh no! not again” starting from the 3rd time.
I actually thought that the second half made the film interesting but then the end was a total let down.
The movie gives a build up that the all-powerful American defence or atleast Dennis Quaid will do some James Bond like stuff to rescue the president but it all turns out to be done by lady luck in the end.
I would not give this movie more than 2 and 1/2 stars.

    Well..
The idea behind the story was terrific. The research is also evident. Forest Whitaker is amazing and so is Dennis Quaid.
But… you eventually have to “complete” every movie.. and this movie looks incomplete. Had the girl not come in front of that ambulance, what would the story have been? (and then they say indian films have too many coincidences!:-? ) I mean.. I would have liked it had dennis worked a bit harder to find the president!! It doesnt look too good if it just “happens” !
Basically, its way too abrupt to be an ending.
I also used to hear the audience go “aah” when the 11:59 thing flashed on the screen, which, later, changed to ” ooh no!!!!again!?” !
But, a nice directorial effort. Car chase scene is actually great though I doubt an old retired body guard who is freaked out can actually drift a car like that!

Hope to see more story oriented action !!

    Cheers!

i thought after showing incident as per POV of different people, there would be mind exercising intelligent search for the killer…i think after good concept and strating writer and director became confused “how to end the movoie?” and they used as usual action filled climax.

An awful mess up of a perfectly good premise, if I may say so. Acting was very ordinary and the props used to move the story along..yes, those coincidences too was bad..downright elementary..case of stupid studio interference..yes, it happens in Hollywood too..what is Whitaker doing here??????…and the dialogues just fell flat…eeks!!!

Even Indian audiences..watched it a few days ago in Globus, Bandra…were thoroughly bored..the chase..was too pat..so simple rescuing a Prez!!!

Farhan’s Don had better twists..far better!!
