Video : Q&A with makers of Pancham Unmixed & Amal

I watched a few movies at the MIAAC film festival in New York the week of November 3, 2008 (more details here). Ended up watching short docmentaries Beware Dogs & Personality, and feature films Chai Pani Etc., Vallu, Pancham Unmixed and Amal. Gave Slumdog Millionaire a miss since I knew it would have a wider release. Debatable decision but not regretting it, so far at least. Call it luck or personal taste or just plain state of mind, enjoyed each and every one of them. Thanks to PFC for publicizing some of these independent films or else I’d never drive 450 miles, and back, just for a film festival. Totally worth the effort of driving all the way to New York, and back. Was really disappointed that I couldn’t catch them at the IIFLA earlier in April, but it’s all good now :-)

Q&A with Brahmanand Singh, maker of Pancham Unmixed:

Q&A with Richie Mehta & Rupinder Nagra, maker and lead actor of Amal (there might be some spoilers so clickers beware):

Pratik..ypu ask about subhash ghai in your question…what was it about..i am not aware about it..if you dont wanna answer this..i will understand..no worries

The deal about Subhash Ghai is that he apparently asked RD to compose music for Ram Lakhan. At the same time, he had launched Devaa, which starred Amitabh Bachchan. His favorites Laxmi-Pyaare were supposed to compose for Devaa. Something didn’t work out with Amitabh and Devaa got shelved. Ghai couldn’t say no to LP so he replaced RD in Ram Lakhan without notifying him. RD eventually heard it from other sources that he was out of the project. This was a blow to his confidence since during the previous years, he had not delivered any major musical hits. It just crushed him.

Pancham Unmixed didn’t really mention this in detail; Brahmanand Singh added som excerpts from a Filmfare interview where RD says that Subhash Ghai had taken him off the project without letting him know. I looked it up on the Net later (http://osdir.com/ml/music.pancham/2005-06/msg00231.html).

So that is why I asked Brahmanand Singh if he approached Subhash Ghai for his documentary.

    hmm..didnt know about the background..

I have watched Pancham Unmixed at IFFLA, Pratik and it is a gem of documentary..and the response it got was brilliant…no one was ready to leave the hall…everyone waited for the Q/A

    How was the response their?

It was not packed, but everyone definitely loved it; almost all of them stayed behind for the Q&A. There were a couple of American oldies who walked out mid-way. Understandable since they probably didn’t connect with his music or didn’t know his importance to Bollywood music.

I absolutely loved it. It’s just sad that its audience is limited to film festivals. Hopefully the DVD release will reach a bigger audience.
