Video Review - Pray For Me, Brother
AR Rahman finally releases a music video, something that was long awaited. This song, which was actually released as a single through a mobile phone company, was composed two years ago. Bharatbala, of Maa Tujhe Salaam fame, directs this video with an international crew. This is a fine example of how quality video-making can elevate a song from the stature of great to memorable. The video has started doing rounds of the music channels, and the music should be out too very soon.
Here is a little dekko at the video:
A Western vertical frame opens up this slick video in a street smart genre, with rappers and rockers doing what they are good at, with spliced in images of compassionate faces and people all around. The good part is that apart from all of the stereotypes, the song scores, because it has that Rahman feel to it which takes songs beyond just being songs. Its welcoming to see him shout like a rock star who shouts for a reason. The song is groovy, hip-hop, managing the tight rope walk of beat and melody.
The moon, a microphone creates a shadow of an electric pole over a MISSING board.
The video begins and end with a black & white couple. They are angry from a fresh fight and the video is what happens before they smile again.
Black artists, reggae singers, unknown faces on the streets who leave a memory.
Crossroads.
The song does not take any direct takes on racism or exploitation but there are subtle undercurrents.
Here are the lyrics:
Pray For Me Brother (2007)
Composed by A.R.Rahman
Lyrics by Blaaze
Singers: A.R.Rahman and Blaaze
Pray for me brother
Pray for me brother
Pray for me sister
Are you searchin’….
Pray for me brother
Lookin’ for the answers To all the questions In my life
Will I be alone Will you be there By my side
Is it something he said Is it something he did
I wonder why He is searchin’ For the answers
To stay alive
Could you ever listen Could you ever care
To speak your mind
Only for a minute For only one moment
In time
The joy is around us But show me the love
That we must find
Are you searchin’ For a reason to be kind, to be kind…
He said… Pray for me brother
Pray for me brother Pray for me sister
Pray for me brother Say
what you wanna say now
But keep your hearts open
Be what you wanna be now
Let’s heal the confusion
Pray for me brother
Don’t let me take When you don’t wanna give
Don’t be afraid Just let me live
Don’t let me take When you don’t wanna give
Don’t be afraid Say what you wanna say now
But keep your hearts open
Be what you wanna be now Let’s heal the confusion
Pray for me brother Pray for me brother
I’m ashamed ah, brother be dying of poverty
when he down on his knees its only then he prays
And it’s a shame ah, brother be dying of ignorance
cos the world is a trip and everybody’s a hypocrite
Need to stop ah , taking a look at the other
I’m not ashamed of poverty
need to be making his life better
So think about it, think about it once more
cos life is a blessing and it’s not justa show, ah
Round and round the world is spinning around
We need to be singing a prayer, we need to be singing it now
Round and round the world is turning around
We need to be singing a prayer, we need to be singing it now
Need to be feeling the power, need to be feeling the faith
We need to coming together just to win this race
Need to be feeling the power, need to be feeling the faith
We need to coming together just to win this race (twice)
Are you searching for a reason to be kind ?

truly a mesmerising song ….one more master piece from rahman.
Its got a nice msg. But very very poor video. The rap by blaze makes the song loose its essence in a very bad way.
Bharatbala can do and has done much better. But thumbs up just for the msg! truely great.
Thnx Tushar…was thinking that somebdy should do a post on it.N here u r!!
But I felt it was too wannabe…like trying desperately to fit into somebdy’e else clothes…to make his mark somewhere else…to satisfy somebody else’s sensibilities….. Rehman can do much much better. N same with Bharatbala. they dont need to restrict themselves to some predictable norms…..black man n white woman…is this the deadend of creativity!! some nice camerawork n slick editing 4 sure. ppl have done so many videos/movies on similar themes…whats new in it ? no fresh approach. Big disappointment4 me!!!
I got the CD today, which comes with a bonus making of the video DVD, this is a nice trend of kicking off singles in India, lets see if it works. in the past it has been attempted but not quite successfully.
Water is also finally officially out, hope the film releases soon while the Oscar hype might help it getting decent revenues after all the dark phase.
I loved the song and the video .pray for me brother is for me is the best song of all time thank to this musical genius A R Rahman and I hope Rahman sir keep on doing making this kind of songs.thumb up to A R Rahman .

thumbs up for the great mastro :d/:d/
But so sorry to see that the whole album with video is being posted for downloads on many sites.I too first heard the song downloaded from a site. But the noble cause prompted me to buy a legal cd and I managed one on 15.03.2007.
As for the song, the rap by Blaaze has not done that much good, it simply went away from the theme. I loved the instrumental version more than the song. The end portion was great:-\”:-\”
The video too is well edited to convey the message .
Great work by a mastro !!!!!!!!!!!

Hey there!
I jus came here to say that this song is really nice!!! A R Rehman did a great job once again! :d
The video is good, the song is awesome! n for a nice cause…
The line “Are you searching, for a reason, to be kind”, really touched me….
Cheerio!!
We’ll surely pray for all you, brothers and sisters… we’ll surely have a heart for you… May God bless u with a new, shining life… :)>-
I just saw the video, and can I say I am totally underwhelmed?
The video is beautiful, and was shot at some of my favourite places in Los Angeles.
I think the rap part was the best part of the video.
It is beautifully shot, and a beautiful montage, but I thought it was cold, a lot of beauty without passion.
And, I don’t know how many of you outside of California are aware that AR Rahman is GIANT in the American community here. The radio station I volunteer for plays his music, and when they give away his CDs for promotion they go in seconds. I wonder if that in any way influenced the western sound of this song, a western sound that bores me when done by western pop artists, let alone “world” musicians.
That said, the message is wonderful, but I just didn’t find any passion here…
@t!, thanks for the comments. its great to know that Rahman is HUGE over there too. m currently listening to the CD of Sivaji, his current spell trap. btw, did u see GRINDHOUSE yet?!
Grindhouse is tonight at 6:30 pst. I can barely work today I am so excited…
t! I love the video and the song but I had a similar response to it as you did. It’s a very carefully crafted, overproduced piece, lacking the spontaneity and earthiness of “Maa Tujhe Salaam”. Not surprising as it was a project funded by Nokia (content distribution leading to brand awareness).
Its high time Rahman stops praying!
Its been 10 years. Every time he makes an album he is praying…for india…for poor people…for mankind. We get it Rahman… but move on man. Some one who makes inasane amount of money should be doing something also apart from singing for god all the time. We get it that u r a suffi & all that…
The video was well made. The story part was cliche’ but then what can you expect of such a cliche’ song anyways. The rap part came too late & it wasnt worth it at all. Rahman trying to look cool for the video doesnt work either.
t! which radio station do u work at?
yet another great work from ar rahman..blaaze also done nicely../:)
hi……………….

Rahman has proved once again that he is King when it comes to the food of love (read music). And yeah Mainak, we know that the likes of you are better off listening to Mr. Constipation (Himesh Reshammiya), so just stick to that and puff up with pride. Or better still, try to GROW UP, or maybe this is what you are genetically capable of, oops..that’d mean the mistake lies with one of your father’s gene pools:d/, so buddy TRY TO get a life and no I don’t expect you to reform, so just suck up to Bollywood and David Dhawan, you wimp.
Whatever happened to free speech? Heck, we got a problem here Mr. Mainak, the world can not accommodate bozos like me. boohoo!!!:((
