Vinay on a roll!

Oh My GOd! Another Vinay Pathak film. Another enjoyable journey. Vinay Pathak as the proverbial common man who has a nice life but wants more and will not stop till he gets more. You meet him everyday. He comes knocking at your door with his wonderful ’scheme’ that would multiply your money in no time. He comes when you are hanging around the coffee machine in your office. He sneaks up behind you when you think you have given him the slip. You don’t want to be a part of his ’scheme’, but he will not rest till he has managed to make you say ‘yes’.
It’s one of those low-buget so-called ‘multiplex films’. A brilliant film, no doubt. The occupancy in the halls was disheartening. This movie needs viewers. It’s a nice film about common people. It’s a film you can identify with. All the performers – Vinay Pathak as the protagonist, Divya Dutta as his wife, Harsh Chaya as the kind-hearted troubled boss, and of course the inimitable Saurabh Shukla as God – do the perfect job. No one is over-the-top. It’s the perfect pitch.
The film makes you laugh. You laugh at the eccentricities of life, you laugh at Dubey’s stupidity and madness, and you laugh at his folly. You also laugh at God. The exchanges between Shukla and Pathak are really funny. God id trying his best to give Dubey the money he so desperately craves, and Dubey is pushing the money away with both hands. Bhagwan deta hai par Dubey nahi leta hai. That’s life – and that’s life’s big joke!
Finally when Dubey does get the money – 10 crores no less – bit by bit drives him mad. It’s sad. A perfectly sane man going mad in front of your eyes for the very thing that he desired.
First time director Sourabh Srivastava does a brilliant job. The premise of the movie is slim, but Srivastava makes sure that the film doesn’t lose its tempo. Neither does it get too preachy. It’s far from a boring film. The fact that God comes down to earth to help Dubey may seem far-fetched – but you nonetheless go along with it. It’s so beautifully woven into the picture that you don’t take it as a very common thing to have happened.
But, it is Vinay’s film alone. This actor has developed into a one-man show. Bheja Fry, Dasvidaniya and now Oh My God! – what more can you ask of an actor?

Is there some kind of a movement going on here to push a rank bad film? It’s as incredulous as people going gaga over a film like Kidnap or RGV Ki Aag.
@ rocky
oh really?
that must have deeply hurt your cinematic senses..
@Rocky,
C’mon u can’t equate dis with Kidnap n RGV Ki Aag!!! But, ok. Everyone has a right to his views. Sad, u couldn’t appreciate the film. Every film has flaws n dis one has too, but u can’t slot it with RGV Ki Aag. Nthin, n i repeat, nthin can b dat BAD!
Vinay Pathak is a brilliant actor.It is always worth watching a movie if Vinay Pathak is performing.His breath-taking acting and his selection of movies, makes it an enjoyable experience.If there is a movement to make people watch his movies,then I am a part of the movement.
@Jyotsna
Well said!
@rocky..do you yourself believe that Oh my God is a very bad film. Have you seen the film? I again repeat “HAVE YOU SEEN THE FILM”? If so, can you please give a short summary of the film? If you still feel that I am trying to impose upon you..just for heck’s sake tell us about just any one liner from the film? If still you are feeling that someone here is trying to corner you, just simply tell “ABUSE” we’d understand.
Let me tell you something friend. Sourabh Srivastav (not my brother) is a first time director. He did this (this!!!) on a very small budget totally relying on his script and the capacity of his principal actors.
Medha, if you notice, did not say much about the film and its story. She spoke about a wonderful actor called Vinay. Yes, she wants us to go and see the movie. Spend a few bucks to see a wonderful actor. If you are so worried and concerned about contemporary cinema, I think you should spend the bucks (I heartily congratulate you if you have already done so). You will not make another comment like that.
Friend, it’s easy to point a finger and make a comment. It is so hard to go all the way to the nearest plex, spend your hard earned and sit with a dispirited few and still like a brave attempt like this, so much that she comes back and writes about it. At least, give her that much!!!
I request you to see her other articles. If she is promoting someone or some films out of turn (hell, even that she is completely entitled to), then I shall delete this comment from here.
Man, you have just provoked me into getting into the most eloquent diatribe ever on this blog. You must be some guy.
You are provided with a lot of good senses. Use them, Indian cinema need all the positivity we can generate to enable some good films every year. Otherwise, you shall be getting Kidnap 1, Kidnap 2 and Dhoom 7 as staple diet for the years to come. Uday Chopra shall be your tinsel Idol. But that was what you wanted, right!!!
Indraneel, thanks for your outburst. It was very nice of you.
I am thinking whether it will be possible for you to return the 100 bucks I spent on this gem. Once you do that, I will reconsider my comments about this movie.
One more thing. Going by your admirable zeal and passion for mature cinema commentary, you should also lobby for a rule here on PFC that anybody who makes a comment here must attach a scanned copy of the movie ticket.
Plus a scanned copy of a photograph showing the commenter holding that same movie ticket in his hand. (Both tickets should match.)
Plus an affadavit by the cinema authorities citing that the commenter did indeed make use of the ticket.
With such a persuasive personality like yourself, I am sure this can become a reality soon.
(PS: if you are indeed going to return the 100 bucks, please donate it to a charity on my behalf and keep the receipt. The receipt is of supreme importance. Please retain the receipt.)
@rocky..your suggestions are indeed rocking. It says here that you have seen the movie and you have spent Rs. 100 and you would like a refund from me. Then, you would like me to donate this money on your behalf to some charity of your choice.
Friend, kindly mention the choice here in this comment trail and your job shall be done. I am serious. I would like to believe at face value that you have seen the movie and not liked it and have commented here because you actually were very cut up with PFC people who were pushing their hidden agenda. Fair enough!
I shall pay. The receipt shall be faxed by my office to you for further records. Now, all I require is the name of the charity and their account no.s or tel no.s so that I can contact them.
Rocky, I am walking this mile because I want you you to reconsider your comments. You have mentioned it and so I shall do. The cheque is written outand just the name is missing.
dude, no marketing won’t get the people in. plus, it was too close to the mumbai tragedy, i reckon, for a film to work with that target audience.
