FOR ADULTS ONLY - Virginity Lost

Dear fanatics,
Before we get personal, let me tell you a few things about me.

Even before I decided I wanted to make films, I wanted to be a detective till I was nine years old, from the age of 9-12, I wanted to be a ‘Hero’ that was until the first pimple broke out.

Age 12 onwards my fate was sealed — I wanted to write and direct my own films. Besides writing school, my residential colony and later college plays I used to draw posters of my films (King, Darinda etc) in a specially bought notebook.

For the longest time my lack of interest in education was the biggest worry for everyone around coupled along with my hyperactive nature I was deemed fit for the loony bin.

At 16, I discovered Stephen King. And in the insanity of his characters I found sanity. Suparn Reborn.

Went through the educational years however it was only my time at Xaviers, which was the most influential.

I made friends with a classmate. Passed out 1995. ABCL was born the year before.

My friend and I started a production house, and wrote what I really believe to be the most awesome piece of work, involving time travel, medieval adventure when a bunch of kids are sucked through a portal and have to rescue the younger sibling, save a princess, travel to the future and face many a threat (You have to remember this was all before the Harry Potter phenomenon took place). It was a 26-episode serial. For a full description of my time ahead read this link http://www.rediff.com/movies/2001/jan/11verma.htm

Anyway, got into films which is what I wanted to do and nothing else, faced with the idea of never entering the world of films I had decided I would become an usher in a movie theater, it hasn’t happened yet, but well now u know my back-up option.

If you want some career anecdotes to start off this blog…

Here are some:

I started out writing for Ram Gopal Varma, but a film never came out off it, 3 scripts did though. I had luckily read his quote that he believes in using others and is open to being used, so while I was being used, I used him as a free school in screenplay writing. Meeting him is a very essential and learning part of any young filmmakers’ journey. The last time we met professionally was when he told me the first scene of Company being written by Jaideep Sahni(loved his Khosla Ka Ghosla, one of the most mild-mannered nice guys I met early in my career). I knew I wasn’t getting to work on that script. We met again when he called me to see Ong Bak (hated it), I told him about my directorial debut Boss, it was later called Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. He had loved the original title.

The first film, which I have written, is called Shaadi.com, which was launched but never made. PS: Anurag loved the script, he just told me so ;-)

Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai was actually an original script, marketed as American Pie. What fun! ;-)

Zameen was actually pitched by me to John Mathew Mathan as Sarfarosh Part 2.

OZ wanted me mention this so here goes. The original ending of Karam had Priyanka’s character being killed, and Shiney, the cop shooting dead another cop when John is cornered and saluting John, as after killing Captain (the villain) John has become the underworld kingpin. The last shot has John sitting on the same chair in the same room of the same world he wanted to escape.

If you have seen Chhal, I like bringing life to a full circle, Mahabharat undertones are something I love to put everywhere, including calling my leading men Arjun or Karan every chance I get. Wish Duryodhan sounded cool as a name, would call every baddie Duryodhan. Though Ravan as a name rocks.

Last bit of trivia: Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena is inspired by House of Games, Confidence, Matchstick Men, The Sting, The Grifters, Conmen and 13 other films. The opening in reverse is an ode to Memento, the whistle of Fardeen’s coin toss against black is our musical version of Twisted Nerve. The red in the film was inspired by the red hues of In a moos for love including the shot before the love making song when Fardeen and Koena are walking in high speed in the corridor and he turns and gives her the room keys. There is a shot in the song in which Fardeen is sitting on the chair and Koena leans back, it’s the poster of Murder in a French Garden ;)

And so my dear fanatics, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena is not a remake of Confidence.;-)

The background music reference during editing was Chinatown. And I think Absolute White the guys who did the background music did an awesome job of forgetting all the references and creating an original score.

Boman Irani was the first choice to play Sikander, eventually played by Gulshan Grover.

Bipasha Basu agreed to play the lead role, unfortunately things didn’t work out, I still salute her for saying in every interview, at that time, that she loved the script.

Signing out for today.

Quote for the day: We shall die here. Every last inch of me shall perish. Except one. An inch. It’s small and it’s fragile and it’s the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it, or sell it, or give it away. We must never let them take it from us. (V for Vendetta)

hi suparn! what are you currently working on? why dont you go to meet rgv with a script titled “boss” starring mohit ahlawat and nisha kothari in the lead roles…you mentioned that he had loved the title…and with your casting as mentioned above i’m sure he’ll love the package! he’ll give you to direct it for his own banner…try it…use him this time!!

Welcome to this addiction Suparn…. Good post.

“Duryodhan” Yeah…he is my fav. character from Mahabharat.. If i ever get a chance to make a film..my lead character will be named “SUYODHAN”.
Man people have really raped his wonderful name..

  5. ricky on November 7th, 2006 12:26 pm

hey and the french movie you mentioned is not “murder in a french garden” but “death in a french garden”…by the way how much of your time did you waste when you were writing for rgv’s “company”? what kind of movie references did he give you while writing for him…i know that rgv gives his writers a lot of references for ‘inpiration’…some movies he was ‘inspired’ by are 1. in the mood for love(naach), 2. ek hasina thi(double jeopardy), 3. the italion job(daud / climax scene where the bus is hanging on to the cliff), 4. the assignment(company / the entire chase sequence where vivek oberoi is shot in malaysia), 5. inner senses(bhoot)

Welcome to PFC, Suparn. Gotta confess that I liked the packaging of EKEH, irrespective of my opinion about the itself. BTW, that’s a huge list of inspirations. One honest question to you and other PFC elite - if I may - how come we seldom see any Indian movies and directors listed on any of these “inspired” lists? why don’t we see or hear about people emulate or get inspired by makers - with originality - like Hrishida, Basuda, Satyajit Ray, Bapu, K.Vishwanath, Vamsi, et al? [the last three are Telugu directors and... oops! that's two questions :-?]

  8. striker on November 7th, 2006 4:20 pm

yeah.. the saving grace of EKEH was definitely its stylishness.. actually, make that saving graceS. kaykay was in it too, and the songs were pretty decent. “jal jal ke dhuan” was sung brilliantly by sonu, and “ankhiyan na maar” was peppy and upbeat.. nicely done by sunidhi.

Well thank you for a frank insight into how you created your film. I’d rather you mention your inspirations from Hollywood/World cinema, rather than idiot directors flat our refusing that they were inspired by american films and that the idea came to them in a coke induced dream or that they thought of it years before.
I like what I heard of your bildungsroman tale, and I do believe that harry potter tales are a dime a dozen in India, and I mean that in a good way. Personally, I don’t like the books anymore, they sort of went Ramu’s way. The author got too much money and now just panders to the fans, and the story requires more pages than needed. At least with a Stephen King 800-page-er you know its a lot of characterization meat.

liked the article suparn and yes even the rediff one is pretty inspiring …

Ek khiladi … will be remembered for its sleek songs … and of couorse for the sheer achievement of yours … of having made fardeen look ‘tolerable’ and ‘act’ in any film !!! That is the only film in which fardeen is ok …

Can u write more about the films and books/authors who inspire u so that fanatics may learn from them ….

  11. Tushar on November 10th, 2006 5:51 am

hey kartik, i never saw EKEH. it looked nice when the promos came out, but somehow it just went non-happening at some stage. i guess its release was delayed. now me thinks i should check it out.
fardeen reminds me i was so jobless today that i was watching PREM AGGAN! its an eclectic oddball that will find mention in the public hall of shame.everything about it is so perfectly screwed, you wonder if it was done on purpose.
imagine what was he called in the film- SOORAJ!
n half the dialogues have the word SOORAJ in them, how imaginative!
n the actress meghana should be sent to mars for lettin martians know we aint no threat for them in terms of intelligence..

  12. RK on November 10th, 2006 6:09 am

Are Bluff master and ek khiladi ek haseena adopted from different hollywood films?
Have not seen Hose of games and Confidence but Bluff Master and EKEH seemed similar.

  13. george thomas on November 17th, 2006 10:55 pm

aah, I like the original ending of KARAM.
What were the other “13 films” inspiring EKEH? I know I got a few of the ones you listed when I watched the film; I’m curious to see what I missed:)

  14. Suparn Verma on November 18th, 2006 4:26 pm

will list them for u in my next blog, but a few visual references, the climax fight, the close up pnch of kk and fardeen, their cheecks shaking with sweat flying out in high speed, ref was nowhere to hide, card room table, the girls in the glass cage, ref was a passing card game shot in oceans 11, tried to incorporate riffi but then decided against blocks and used a round trolley. the shot where actors makrand and kaykay point their guns at each other and freeze and only camera moves, was a hint at the dramatic shots in infernal affairs 1/2 where the actors would be still on the camera on the track would be moving, removed a whole track from the sting, spade during the fourth draft, anyway more later

    hey suparn…good writeup…
i have watched ekeh in bits and pieces and i feel tht ur first directorial attempt was a pretty sleek attempt in terms of visualisation and concept…but i thought tht the story still needed to be made a little compact…it could have done with some editing…
I am just a movie buff like anyone else and may not know wht goes on in the making of a movie…but still i had expexted a lot more from ekeh…
    Btw,
kudos to you for accepting atleast tht ekeh was inspired by some of those holywood movies…atleast u have the guts to admit that…
I would really love to meet rgv in person as i am a big fan of this director who loves to make movies off the track and atleast has the guts of experimenting…
Wish u best of luck for ur next movie and hope u give us a cracker of a movie…
