Visiting the sets of BHRAM… with pictures

[ oz note : Pavan has been gracious enough to accept PFC's idea of blogging on his sets... it's another rare instance where bloggers are right there on the sets of a movie and blogging their experiences. Manjeet and Kartik having been running to Pavan's sets after their regular day jobs, because in Kartik's words... Pavan's tremendous passion for cinema is contagious and both he and Manjeet have been visiting the sets since the last two days... Manjeet has gone on a photo shoot overdrive... sending in truckloads of pictures that I now have to break his post up into two parts... will be loading more pictures that Manjeet took on the sets of Bhram tomorrow... if you guys have any questions regarding the shoot you want to ask anyone on the sets... please do comment in... ]

A hotel on Juhu beach, where Rajesh Khanna and Dimple got married is the location for Antara’s (Sheetal Menon) apartment. After seeing good days the hotel lies vacant in hope of renovation. The sets have been made on its terrace. One can see Madh Island to Worli or may be beyond on a clear day. It’s very peaceful. The ocean waves can be heard hiting the shore.

It was a pleasure to meet Pavan Kaul, Dino Morea, Sheetal Menon, Hiroo Keswani (Cinematographer) and other unit members. Dino plays the lead role of ‘Shantanu’. Milind Soman and Simone Singh are the other actors, portraying key roles. Their schedule will resume around 22nd Dec.

The film is been shot in popular ‘Cinemascope’ and won’t be undergoing the Digital interface (DI) process. During the print development stage the process of ‘bleach’ would be skipped for the flashback portions. It will enhance image contrast. The colors will get milder. This would be experimented for the first time in Bollywood. The sound would be conventionally dubbed. Still pilot sound recording is required on sets to sync the lip movements during the dubbing process. As there is no need for a silent camera Arri 435 is been used.

Pavan jokingly said,” I would like to make a film, which only has male actors. So that I do not have to wait for the make up of the actresses “. In between shots it does take long time to ready the sets, set up the lights and to get the makeup right. Its something you can not control. Anyways the wait gave me time to interact with the director. How could we not discuss legendary Raj Kumar, who happens to be Pavan’s Uncle! We however did not discuss his acting skills but his Golfing skills? Raj Kumar use to play Golf in the US club. The club is situated right on the southern most tip of Mumbai, touching Arabian Sea. Very few cities in the world would have a Golf course, which would match its beauty. The royal cantonment area further increases its charm. Raj Kumar use to say ” Golf is my profession, acting is only my hobby”. ?

Have you guys heard of Murali Nair? He is a Malayalam film maker. Winner of Golden Camera award at Cannes for his film ‘Marana Simhasanam’ in 1999! While Murali was studying at Xavier’s, Pavan’s wife met Murali and introduced him to Pavan. Murali later assisted Pavan in ‘Chor aur Chand’. A close friend of mine, who was Murali’s colleague, informed me about his connection with Pavan. Obliviously I was tempted to bring up the topic.

Pavan thinks it’s of no use of doing shot divisions as you do not always get what you want on sets. So it’s better to improvise and shoot with what you get. A pre-planned shot might be disappointing if its not possible to realize it. He has a visual image but does not limit himself to that image. A few shots, which he loves, he does have a concrete plan for their execution. When it comes to directing an actor, Pavan believes in giving full freedom to the actor. Rather than having a fix image and making the actor perform to the image, he feels its better to know what the actor has to offer and then improvise for better results. If director strictly makes actors follow his vision, then all the performances of various actors look very methodical and similar.

Hiroo passed out from FTII, Pune in 1987. He shares a special relationship with Pavan. Both of them have same wavelength, which makes it easier to design a shot. Pavan does not interfere in Hiroo’s work.

Shahrukh Khan was another obvious point of discussion with Pavan. Both of them had started their film careers around the same time. Pavan has seen King Khan living in one room flat in Mount Mary Church area in his earlier days. The flat just had a TV set and a mattress lying on the floor. It was unlucky that his film ‘Jaadu’ with SRK ran into trouble due to the producer backing off. After three years when SRK became a star. The producer was desperate to complete the film but it was too late. Having seen hard times SRK and Pavan share a special bond.

Pavan is kind of laid back. The work comes to him instead of the other way around. He accepts work, which he likes and has to invariably refuse. There is always an offer from television but his first love is film. It’s not in his nature to convince people to get a project going. At the same time he does not find it wrong if someone is chasing people for work. It’s just his nature, which does not allow him. The current film was offered by Magna, who are the publishers of Stardust, Showtime and many other magazines. Bhram is their first film.

Pavan is one of the rare bread of Bollywood directors, who knows the finer details of Cinematography, editing and other aspects of film making. His shots are visually amazing. He jokingly said, “Not lot of directors here know the difference of dolly in and zoom in”.

manjeet - you are one lucky dude

  2. sangeeta on December 13th, 2006 12:15 pm

“So that I do not have to wait for the make up of the actresses”

With the amount of make up and screen presence the male leads have in the movie I would’ve thought they hogged the make up room - Oh good shots too

  3. striker on December 13th, 2006 12:17 pm

manjeet, nice pics man.. location looks awesome! dino, if you’re reading this (or manjeet, pass the word on to dino), you’re committing the cardinal sin of eating in costume!! always change outta costume before having your off-set lunch or dinner.. else one oily parantha or ketchup or curry stain.. and you’ve wasted a couple of hours trying to get the stain out or trying to find a replacement shirt. i’m surprised the AD or costume dept didn’t care to tell dino about this..!?

  4. oz on December 13th, 2006 12:52 pm

    - Wow Striker… you noticed!!!

  5. oz on December 13th, 2006 1:05 pm

    - oh by the way I noticed Manjeet keeps wearing the New York Film Academy tshirts whenever he visits movie sets…

  6. striker on December 13th, 2006 1:06 pm

oz, this is one incident where i didn’t learn the hard way :) happened to a co-star of mine during dinner in one of my earlier films, and we were in a remote location.. only had a couple of scenes left to shoot for the night, and this happened.. let’s just say pasta sauce and white shirts are not a good combination.. and you had this huge red dot from all the wiping, which only made it worse.. needless to say, the shoot for the night was cancelled bc we couldn’t get him another clean white shirt.. i still give him a hard time about that :))

  7. oz on December 13th, 2006 1:08 pm

    - Sheetal Menon has a photogenic face… Manjeet stop chasing her around the sets… Has she done any films or theater/telly before this?

Just got an email from a PFC reader about my question on what book Dino is reading… according to the reader, it seems to be “How to make love like a Porn Star”… Manjeet, is it true? ;)

  8. ricky on December 13th, 2006 1:15 pm

oz sheetal menon did her acting course with anupam kher’s acting school…she had deepika padukone for company there…deepika will be starring opposite shahrukh khan in farha khan’s next project titled “om shanti om”…

  9. ricky on December 13th, 2006 1:25 pm

striker have you taken a break from work? or it’s just that not too many interesting roles coming your way…something that will excite you to get busy with work as an actor…

[ edited by admin : Ricky - this is getting personal... please keep PFC clean and focussed on the passion for cinema... ]

tell us about your released films…

  10. Honhaar Goonda on December 13th, 2006 1:28 pm

manjeet, some decent caption! and regarding dino.. perhaps he has better table manners, eh?

  11. oz on December 13th, 2006 1:37 pm

    - HG… cough cough… captioning done by yours truly… cough cough :-”

  12. Honhaar Goonda on December 13th, 2006 1:47 pm

  13. Windmill on December 13th, 2006 1:51 pm

    wow!! sheetal menon :”>

  14. striker on December 13th, 2006 2:00 pm

ricky, all good, and valid questions. thanks for this.

“have you taken a break from work?”
i’m a hardware engineer by profession, and an actor on the side. so believe me, i’m at work as i type this. (or at least i try to look busy enough). as for my other job.. take a break from acting? impossible. i may as well ask someone to kill me instead. i’m in the process of shooting two movies right now, and both do have exciting roles for me, actually. more on that later, if i do a post on it.

not sure what you’re insinuating about my “comments”, but if i were typing these in hopes of getting a call from anurag or pavan, i’d only be fooling myself. and i ain’t no fool, sir. allow me to counterpoint. what are you getting out of taking me to the stand? i choose to comment when and where i want, about what i want, and if my eye for detail at dino’s eating in costume bothers you, then go tell dino not to eat in costume, and maybe i won’t point it out. it was an observation man. get over it.

i’ve always stayed true to being an actor, but yes, i have dabbled in writing, asst.direction, production, and other aspects of filmmaking, but only because all areas of filmmaking fascinate me. i have never tried to take over anyone else’s job simply out of respect. you let them do their job, you do yours.

as for my released films, all in due time, although one did just release straight to DVD (skeleton key). a couple of others are upcoming releases within the year, and i’ll let PFC know about them as and when i hear about release dates myself. for now, you can take comfort in the fact that skeleton key has been covered by fangoria magazine, and if you look closely enough, you can see my name is second on the poster art (yes, i was a lead in this movie)

    http://fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=3199

hope that answered all your questions. if you want, give me your email and i’ll add you to my fan club :-”

  15. OM on December 13th, 2006 2:05 pm

Wow Manjeet..You lucky dog…Good pics and a nice article too..Thank a ton buddy..

What is Dino reading? Damn it Oz you never said we have weekly editions of PFC coming in print now…

  16. striker on December 13th, 2006 2:22 pm

    amendment to my own comment:

“i choose to comment when and where i want, about what i want [as long as it's PFC-related]…”

  17. oz on December 13th, 2006 2:23 pm

    - OM, I’m still waiting for Manjeet who must be snoring as of this moment in Bombay. If he is reading what the PFC reader suspects… then he has a copy of Jenna Jameson’s biography written by Neil Strauss… :d

  18. OM on December 13th, 2006 2:55 pm

Yes is that an insiders info Oz…If that is so, he better read the best work of Neil Srauss “The Game”…then he might not have to read…How to Make Love…

  19. oz on December 13th, 2006 3:19 pm

    - Manjeet, one thing… and I know Kartik will be covering this too… but what are the different styles you noticed in Pavan’s and Anurag’s film making, taking shots etc.

  20. OM on December 13th, 2006 7:27 pm

@Striker good pint about the same kapde for lunch..that too dino is eating Chicken Noodle soup..lol

  21. randramble on December 13th, 2006 9:23 pm

Just like the quantity of photos, the content too was amazing! Thanx a ton, Manjeet and oz (for PFC itself)!

I second Sangeeta and OM on Manjeet’s luck! Manjeet: are you just going about doing your working along with blogging for PFC?

    striker: thanx for the tip!

  22. Pavan Kaul on December 14th, 2006 1:07 am

    Hey guys,

Am right in the midst of shoot..but could not stop myself from adding a few lines.

When Oz called me and suggested that PFC authors cover this sched of ‘Bhram’, I complied immediately. Manjeet and Kartik are great guys.

Manjeet is a keen onlooker..very involved. Just a clarification however. My uncle Raaj Kumar, was an actor whose timber and style is unsurpassable. Golf was a passion of his which few knew about.. While speaking of this to Manjeet, I had quoted what he often used to say ” Golf is my profession, acting is only my hobby”.Perhaps Manjeet misunderstood..

There is a whole lot of Tv channels and other media coming today at the shoot, or so I have been informed. So preparing to hide away the ’shy guy’ Pavan and getting ready to talk, talk..

    More later

    Pavan

  23. ricky on December 14th, 2006 3:40 am

striker excuse if i went over the top with my thoughts about your comments posted on PFC…my sincere apologies…but look at the bright side bro…now everyone knows you as the star from skeleton key…all the best to you for your upcoming projects…cheers!

  24. striker on December 14th, 2006 4:20 am

ricky, not a problem.. though i don’t like to indulge in self-promotion and like to let my work speak for itself.. but at oz’s request, i may be putting up some tidbits about my current project on here after all.. and you’re right.. like you said, at least i got the word out about skeleton key, which i probably would not have mentioned otherwise..

thanks for your wishes. much appreciated!

  25. oz on December 14th, 2006 7:32 am

    - Pavan… the next time Manjeet makes a mistake… please tell him he cannot talk to the beautiful women on the sets for 3 hours… that should set him right… (Manjeet I’m just kidding :-” )

Nice to see the media now jumping in to cover Bhram…

  26. manjeet singh on December 14th, 2006 8:12 am

Sangeeta: Actually men do very little make up.

Oz: You should send some PFC T-Shirts for me directors, actors:) Dino was reading a book about travel in space n time. Later we were discussing about stars how far they are. When we r looking at them, we r looking in past, may be few million years.

  27. VC on December 14th, 2006 9:43 am

    :”>:”>Sheetal Menon…
Oz, you mentioned ’sending in truckloads of pictures’…
Can you please stop doing whatever it is that you are doing…and please get sheetal menon’s pics online ASAP…:)

  28. oz on December 14th, 2006 9:44 am

    - VC, just put more pics on a new post :)

  29. Pradeep on December 14th, 2006 12:14 pm

manjeet, Mithun Da ne kisi movie mein kaha tha ki “there is no time no space, only zero - SHOONYA” :-”

  30. kartik krishnan on December 14th, 2006 8:01 pm

    Pradeep - thats a classic !!!

  31. RK on January 16th, 2007 5:03 am

    Pavan:
Re: Golf and RaajKuamr: I read somewhere that till late he did not give a clue to his children that he was a film star and they were not allowed to see films. Raajkumar used to return to home in the evening with Golf Stick in his hands and perhaps he told his children that he was a golf player or Businessman!
As a Child were you always knowing about his true profession?
Or its just one of the man rumours spread about this actor?

  32. Siraj Khan on January 22nd, 2008 1:06 pm

    Dear Pavan

Greetings from Boston. Remember me?… the OP NAYYAR fanatic who you met at Hilton Towers, Nariman Point March last year.
