Water(2007)…An Empty Bubble!
An awaited fireball
Falls through the sky
I rush to catch it
Before the flame could die
I had been told
By the Gods who knew
That the dawn was coming
For the sky beheld skew
The hue was set
Apt for the arrival
Since it had went through much
Struggling for survival
The moment had come
And it was time to rise
If it did not hold your breath
You won’t be enough wise
For it had all the red
That the eye possibly sees
It seemed a firm pressed shirt
Without a crease
I couldn’t resist
I couldn’t hold
I begin to dig in
Me, being the strong and bold
I went on digging
And am still not sure
Whether I am at the crust
Or I have found the core
I find myself hanging
In an empty fireball
Is this what they think
Is dark, handsome and tall?

Recent Posts:

this movie is the most over hyped (indian)movie of 2006 after.saw this movie on my comp..painfully slow movie.watched it for the first 20 minutes then started fast forwading thru most of the movie.decided to watch it the second time more ardently without fast forwading.just cudnt do it….good subject though movie shud have been much more fast paced . the best acting of the movie is by the girl though and ms bandit queen .cant (remember her name)
The girl - Sarala ( her first screen appearance )
Ms Bandit Queen - Seem Biswas
Watch the Marathi film ‘Dhyaasparva’ if you admire Seema Biswas. You will fall in love with her. In this 3/4 year old film, she stars opposite Kishor Kadam - another vibrant and full of life actor ( Damle in Black friday ). The film showcases the work of Mr. R.D.Karve - a social reformer, who tried to bring about sexual awakening and openness regarding sex matters in a highly rigid, 18th century( I suppose so, not quite sure) Marathi Society. The film is one treat to watch.
“Water” is profoundly disturbing. Some scenes shock you, some move you, some make you ashamed of the atrocities practised in the name of religion and social customs. It is sombre but never dull - and the ending is like a ray of sunlight in the gloom. Performances are good. If only we had an inspiring leader like Gandhi in present-day India - but we can still learn from our past, can’t we? One man can make the difference !
Juhi:
Scenes are “kept” in the film to send audience shock.
Whats this Gandhi deal in the film which Ms Mehta is singing since months? Mahatma Gandhi was very much alive in the period she has set her film.
:-w
The problem with water, in my opinion, is the sync between the outer world and the ashram or rather
the lack of such a sync. The pain of the widows is clearly captured, but the world outside wasnt
created authentically. The acting department was also a big let down, esp John Abraham. The little
girl was very natural though. I am still not able to understand why Gandhi had to feature in the film.
It would have become more powerful had the makers decide against introducing him. He should have been
there just in spirit.
@RK:
In complete agreement. Scenes seem to be ‘kept’ in the film.
About the Gandhi deal:
Why was the character introduced in the film? He should have been there just as a spirit as John suggested coz the character just seems misfit there. Where and what role does he play in the film as far as rehabilitaion of the widows is concerned?
The disturbance would have been there had those scenes been shot with a complete indifference. A proper example would be that of Black Friday. The indifference of the story teller towards the suffering of the character helps the story sound more disturbing and the truth comes out as a shock.
The music department too was a big disappointment.I am referring only to the background score here. So much could have been done instead of the obvious attempt to show stark scenes going bland ( Such as the scene when KALYANI gets to know who the father of NARAYAN is. That would have been impressive with some music in the background ).
You are right John. Mr.Abraham did let down. However you cannot forget what RAGHUVIR YADAV did with GULABI. And also the alreday mentioned SARALA. She was so natural especially in the first scene. MANORAMA too stood out with the bitchy head of the ashram.
The film however stood out in its cinematography thanks to Giles Nuttgens. This guy has continued doing his bit for Deepa Mehta.
The lack of sync with the outer world was what actaully needed. However, the intensity and the starkness in it was nowhere felt. A futile attempt though was made when Seema Biswas snapped the mini-door on John’s face. But that was all about it.
In short, Water is like bubble with prismatic visuals on the surface but hollow throughout the volume.
Asmit:
Very first scene where camera captures Lotus flowers and leaves with droplets of water, is good. But film gives impression that its not an honest film and has been made to attract attention to win awards etc.
Does that Ashram give any clue why women like Lisa Ray and Chuhiya and Seema Biswas were living there? was it so restricted that they could not join outside world? Story deptt is poor. Yes in principle it looks appealing if Glamorous heros like John Abraham are given that kind of get up and simple and plain dialogues but characterization needs depth in such films. Why Chuhiya scores above John and Lisa Ray in Acting? Director should have given thought about this factor while filming the shots.
Deepa Mehta shows on screen “India 1938″. and film finishes with that line simply. because India is 7th largest nation in the world. Where in India. Which part of India you are showing in your film? Are you saying whole of India was practising these things which you are showing in the film? Film does not raise many questions about the problems its trying to tackle but many questions are popped up in audience’s mind about the film while watching film.
But Ms Mehta got success and acheived her goal-. She wanted awards and it was awarded in Oscar and now who would question quality of her films?
Earth, Fire, and water, she will be in sky even if she does not make a film with that name.
Asmit: and most important thing. your poetic dealing of the film is far better than the film and your poetic words enhance the value of film.:)
Thats nice:d
Excellent post!
The climax was the worst part of the story. Seema Biswas barely knew about Gandhiji but trusted him with Sarala, that too through somebody?
What bothered me most is what the movie implies. There is text at the end of the movie which reads,
Ha Ha Ha… Sky…. She would really be!
But lets not against HER to that extent. Let us just talk about the film. What she is trying to achieve personally for her is immaterial. The point is even with such goal if she had delivered a better film, it could have still made it to the Oscars on the grounds of the better quality. So what if she aimed fr the awards? That just doesnt serve any reason for her to make a bad film.
Anyways, coming back to the film….’INDIA 1938′
Yes… You seem to steal the words in my mouth which I uttered to myself while leaving the theatre. ( Dunno how I missed to mention it here ). the film is made available to interational audience. And mentioning of just ‘India 1938′ can give a wrong impression. She should have stated the place in India - Benares. Nothing is mentioned about that. So while reviewing you can’t even say that ‘yes, this is where it happened’. She didn’t even give the critics enough space to explore.
Meeta:
Deepa Mehta looked like Ms Mayawati when she quoted Manusmriti. Mayawati’s sole motive was to unite Dalits for votes but what Ms Mehta got by showing that quotation?
How many Hindus have even seen that book called Manusamhita? and is it practised in reality?
Deepa Mehta needs sensational things about India to sell to western audience as they dont know the realities of India and there are many audience back in India for whom every product appreciated by west is God’s gift to humanity.
Well, thank you for that RK!
True Meeta…
Even the starting quote of the film where it mentions some lines from the shastra.
A futile effort to make the film look big than it actually is by starting it with such quotes.
But its not her fault. She thought it was big.
The tragedy is, the audience doesn’t!;)
Asmit:
Dudh ka jala chhacha phoonk kar peeta hai. Banaras had given her enough appreciation while she tried to film it with Shabana Azami and Nandita das. she feared this time to mention even to quote the name of the city in that written inscription. Her fears tell she was not honest while making the film.
Its quite sometime now otherwise few more points could have been discussed.
RK, I would say thank goodness, not many Hindus have read Manusmriti. I haven’t read it, but whatever I hear doesn’t appeal to me (and why would it?!?). Although Crossword tried to sell us a copy yesterday
>> You said: many audience back in India for whom every product appreciated by west is God
Asmit, loved the poetry. For once, a tragedy is making me feel good.
Meeta:
We feel difficulty in reading a book published in 1888 because language and concerns are changed then how centuries old book can give us the same meanings, and if it was so popular a book then it could have been in most of the household as we see Ramayana and Gita.
How many, perhaps Phoenixnu can help me, if his channel has done any survey for that effect?:
I lost complete respect for Deepa Mehta the day she was on the
Loved “Water”.
Loved John in Water.
It seems to be the fashion to
criticize him !!
He is so sincere - never
over-the-top.
Seema & Sarla were superb.
The film teaches us that
even one man can make a change -
the way Gandhi changes a nation
which had given up hope.
How can this be an “empty bubble”?
@ Deepali
JOHN:
It is no fashion to criicize John, my dear. What if he didn’t act well? Acting is not just about looking good. Your dialogues too should carry some weight. John lacked in the conveying power of his diaogues. I never questioned his sincerity. He is a real hard worker as Anurag had mentioned in one of his posts.
FILM:
The film tried to teach whatver you have said. It lacked in conviction. The starkness was absent. And if you are pointing to the Gandhi in the film, he just wasn’t there.
Yes, it is an empty bubble. A bubble looks so magnificient from the outside with reflections of the rainbow colours. The film had a nice look - the cinematography ( Giles Nuttgens ). but on the inside it was empty. It carried no mettle, no commitment, no conviction. Hence, an empty bubble.
