Weekend Wrap

Oh boy what a week! Some interesting snippets, some boring coverage… it seems we and the media are so hungry about news from Bollywood that any news is great news. One news spread over a million different sites covering Bollywood. It isn’t easy to miss “ANY” news on Bollywood if you simply visit one or two sites. That’s all it takes to get the latest on what’s happening in apun ka tinsel town.

Thought I’ll post in short news snippets of today for you to munch along with your tea or coffee or perhaps beer (if you are reading it late in the evening… but if you are what the hell are you doing at home on a late Friday evening??? You need oz’s Pickup Game skills… PRONTO!!!)

Well news is that Ram Gopal Varma is hell bent on starting the shooting of Sholay even if “Allah, Jesus Christ and Vaishno Devi” come to ask him not to remake Sholay. In an interview to Indiafm Varma tells us that Dharmendra plans to really jump from the famous water tank, if Sholay is remade.

And surprise surprise… RGV’s Sholay will have… hold your breath… NO BASANTI. Now heaven knows what the script looks like. I wish I could get my hands on it to see what is Dhanno doing alone in the movie.

The foreign movie selection panel for the Oscars has ordered 5 containers of “Zandu Balm” from India. They will need that balm to take care of their headaches the natural way. You see the cause of their plight is because EVERY FUCKING PRODUCER IN INDIA IS SENDING HIS/HER MOVIE DIRECTLY TO THEM. Latest on the list is Mr. Vinod Vidhu Chopra sending his movie “Lage Raho Munnabhai” directly to the Oscars.

It is time for oz to send his own 60 minutes movie “Intense Relationships: A story about Me, Viagra and my mini-me”

Who is Shagufta Rafique? Answer: Writer of Mahesh Bhatt’s latest “Woh Lamhe”. Another writer comes out and tells the story about her struggles as a writer in Bollywood. It pained me to see that Shagufta, took a break from writing, to work at a bar in Dubai so she could support her family financially.

Her interview at Rediff is worth a read. Incidentally this is the third interview that came out this week on new writers. The other two were mentioned here on Desi Train.

Ms. Mallika Sherawat will now be doing an “item” number in a Kannada film. Apparently the Kannada film makers have agreed as per the contract to bow when Queen Sherawat arrives on sets, kiss her feet, keep their eyes firmly planted on the ground or on the silicon that Queen-jee carries with her everywhere (apparently they are detachable).

Honestly Sherawat doesn’t do it for me. I find her more plastic than sexy.

While there’s a statement given by someone you all know very well…

“This is a specific campaign and not a long-term arrangement. I just had to hold a computer in my hand. I’m a frustrated actor and I always wanted to face the camera. I hope I didn’t end up looking like a fool.”

That dear readers is Karan Johar speaking on his first appearance in an ad (which is HP by the way)

For those who care to know : Krrish is now 100 days old, still running at theaters and having crossed Rupees 65 crores in ticket sales. [link]

Shaad Ali (of Bunty aur Babli) is making his next called “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” (for Yashraj). The film stars Abhishek Bachchan, Priety Zinta and Bobby Deol. Apparently the movie is based on Abhishek being a die hard Chelsea fan. No dear reader, Chelsea is not a girl, but the English Soccer Club. Desifans has more on it.

Great news for cinema fanatics. The Supreme Court has cleared the release for Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday. On one condition. Let the TADA court wrap all it’s decisions up before releasing the movie. The decisions are in progress (Sanjay Dutt is having sleepless nights apparently). Expect Black Friday to release before the end of this year if everything falls in place.

This is news to me too. Because according to this link, Bollywood movies are making more money in the UK than UK based productions themselves.

Wow… Atlast Black Friday Huh!!! This is fantastic news. But, oz, what are the chances of the movie getting released in LA? I know about St.louis…Zero

  2. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 9:38 am

i have seen Black Friday - but would love to see at the cinema without any cuts.

Hang on, if a movie gets ban in India, does it mean that they cannot release it overseas? Or they have not released Paanch and Black Friday in UK/USA cos there is not audience for it?

  3. sumeet on September 29th, 2006 9:44 am

@HG.. Good Point. But, Black Friday and Paanch were not banned. They just did not pass through the censor Board.

Correct me if i am wrong

  4. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 9:51 am

paanch is banned/not giving all the clear by the censor board. where as censor board are awaiting the mumbai 93 blasts verdict before they give it all clear.

if it was not banned by the censor board in india, then surely one of the tv channels must have premiered either of the movies, right?

Anurag Kashyap has showcased his Black Friday and Paanch in a few festivals. I think, last year he was here in UK/Europe showing BF and Paanch.

  5. sumeet on September 29th, 2006 10:05 am

@HG… Paanch has not passed the censor board’s scissors. Black Friday as you said.. yeah awaiting results.

Censor Board cannot ban any movie per se. If they think some scenes need to be deleted or modified, they give the list to producer/director, if they comply by it, then a rating for the movie is given, and the movie can be released. But, in case of Paanch it is still under scissors. Yes Paanch was shown in LA Film Festival last year.

I also do agree with your comment… How can they show the movie in festivals and not to common public? Food for thought.. Film festival wale hum se zyada hazam kar sakte kya?

  6. striker on September 29th, 2006 10:09 am

according to this interview, paanch was refused the release certificate, but not banned.

i’ll try contacting anurag to see if i can get a better estimate of a release date for the overseas market. until then, keep your fingers crossed and jap your “jai mata di”s [-o<

  7. oz on September 29th, 2006 10:14 am

    - Striker, hopefully AK has already read this post and is emailing you details on the release date as we speak :)

  8. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 10:15 am

oh look what i found, oz interviewing Anurag Kashyap and he also used the word ‘banned’:

    http://www.desitrain.com/2006/04/23/in-conversation-with-anurag-kashyap/

aren’t we saying same thing? yes, the Censor Board has not given the green light to Paanch, but ain’t that same as saying banned by the board, however, the verdict could be change if….

    Striker,

Can you also ask him to release Paanch soundtrack as well or just send a copy to me :-”

  9. sumeet on September 29th, 2006 10:20 am

@ HG Paanch soundtrack is out in the market… You can find it on http://www.raaga.com and http://www.musicindiaonline.com ( I hope they are legal man…and i believe they are)

  10. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 10:23 am

yes, i know that, but you cannot buy it. you can only listen to it. i recently went to india and i could not find it anywhere! i don’t want to download it cos the quality ain’t that good.

  11. striker on September 29th, 2006 11:21 am

just chatted with a producer friend in bby who talked to anurag earlier this week.. apparently the release is planned for october, but not sure about the date. regardless, have sent anurag an email asking him to shed light on the issue.. also asked him about the soundtrack release plans for paanch will keep you all posted..

HG, thanks for not downloading the songs.. it’s bad enough that us indie guys have to struggle with the efforts of a release.. we’d only be contributing to the suffocation of talented artists if we promote piracy of good quality stuff.

  12. oz on September 29th, 2006 11:38 am

    - Striker, \:d/ Thanks for the Quick Info man!!!

  13. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 12:01 pm

speaking of piracy, last year i read an interview of anurag on indiafm and apparently he is all for pro-piracy:

    http://www.indiafm.com/features/2005/09/12/698/index.html

(even though he was being a bit sarcastic - he did not mind it that much)

  14. sumeet on September 29th, 2006 12:06 pm

@Striker Thanks for the info man. And No!!!! You cannot download the songs from the above mentioned links, you can just listen to them online… Have no ide if that constitutes under Piracy… Against it too..

  15. Honhaar Goonda on September 29th, 2006 12:18 pm

i am an avid user of musicindiaonline and raaga. i like checking out new music, latest soundtracks/albums and listening to old classic songs. then i buy the album if majority of songs are good. it’s just a online music library.

tell me is it worth buying an album if only one song is good and rest of the songs suck or it is better to listen to that song online when you feel like it?

i hope iTunes gets into Hindi music. so one can download just a song and not entire album.. depending on the choice. they have a section for it but….

I have nothing to add but I hate chelscum. Money bags!!! I am an avid Arsenal fan for past 10 years (ever since I started watching EPL). I will start hating Abhishek from now on. But hey he is not even in my list of actors I rate high!
