what you discovered in 2007 ?
Cinematically. Some of us at PFC were casually chatting to figure out who discovered what in 2007. Thought should put out the list. So, here is the list of the things that we discovered in 2007. Do post what you guys discovered. Anything serious, intersting, weird, funny.
Tushar -
1. The west is no different. I saw people commenting more in a No Country than they did here in No Smoking. May be just a one-off experience.
2. In terms of Cinema greats, I discovered Woody Allen can be such a good actor apart from just making us laugh by playing himself, I discovered the wonderful possibilities and challenges facing the animation industry in India, I discovered there are 463 TV channels at the last count and a little mechanics of how TRP’s work(and Star Gold has highest TRP when it shows ‘Krishna’).
3. In TV, I discovered the amazing Travel & Living channel, so much so that I hardly watch anything else except that and some movie channels.
4. I discovered some great films…off the map, the front, white diamond, beyond the clouds, riddle of auto shankar, dirty harry(there is a huge article on that), big fish, ghostbusters, donnie brasco, and a few more french and german films I cant remember.
5. I discovered Guillermo del Torro is not very popular in Spain.
6. I discovered people would watch trashy B graders series(Hostel, Saw..)but not quite stand up and applaud when someone nails it with a Grindhouse.
7. I discovered there is no point justifying a film. If you love it, be impassionate about it.
8. I also discovered its better to watch the extra features in some collector DVD films.
Striker - that a film like no smoking CAN indeed get made in india, and small experiments ARE truly appreciated
OM -
1. That their are tons of movies out their, which make only festival rounds, which are fantastic, get tons of awards, but never hit the screen. 2007 was the first time ever i attented a film festival yaar….it “really’ was a revelation to me.
2. Discovered Shilpa Shetty could be a fine actress
Pavan - to me.. P.F.C.
Pratim D Gupta - I discovered no one in Bollywood can cry better than Aamir Khan on screen…
Subrat - Very personal - I discovered Sherlyn Chopra in Red Swastika
WB- If I were to keep it strictly desi….
discovered my thoughts in 2 AK’s and then lost myself deeply in one Nopi.
discovered the bonding between a majedar chor and a nanhe sipahi under a blue umbrella.
discovered the joy of retro and the thrill of pulp, and umpteen hindi movies that can be
watched allover again, in one Johnny Gaddar.
discovered that SRK can still act.
discovered that Farah can make a good buddy if we ever meet and wanna discuss hindi cinema of 70/80’s.
DazedandConfused - Discovered that I could write a full length screenplay if I wanted to…
Discovered that I could write, direct, act and edit a one minute movie…
Discovered that somebody would actually want to marry me…
Discovered that I sing better than I thought I did…
Vasanbala - there are people who are far more passionate and committed and willing to go to great lengths for cinema….i feel like a pigmy.
Honhar Goonda - I discovered this article:

:-D
I did not discover anything interesting last year because I did not go out to discover anything and people around me did not discover anything interesting either, unfortunately. There ain’t much gold left in the world. Actually, there is, all Indians have locked up the gold in the safe. It passes from one generation’s safe to the next generation’s safe..
And I discovered that Romania produces only 4 to 6 films in a year. Thnx to a film called 4months, 3 weeks and 2 days which got the Golden Palm. Yes six films and one golden palm. 600 films and fighting over Eklavya & Dharm.
Also, an interesting connection between stripping, peep show and screenplay writing. Heard of a film called Juno ? Check this one out The Pussy Ranch. Here is the Juno Connection.
Now waiting to hear from your side.

OK, assuming PFC is in everyone’s list, what else (cinematically) impressed you? something that was existing all these years but still it was only this year that you truly discovered it…
some hidden art, a great film maker, a new technique may be, a startling fact which shattered your notions, an unsung talent whow deserves to be up there but is yet relegated to the gutters…
aur bolo bhai log!
I discovered very recently that the best and the worst thing that someone’s ever said to me were both been in relation to GOD..
Just at the start of last year, someone had very generously said to me, “You are GOD”..
And last year drew to a close with someone pulling off the remark, “What was GOD thinking when he was making you?”….
Discovered Africa and African Cinema:
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun,
Ousmane Sembene,
Merzak Allouche,
Abderrahmane Sissako among others
I REdiscovered my passion for cinema, for writing….discovered that there were a set of people who were more passionate than me about this….discovered and learnt a lot more about cinema in 2007 than in all the preceeding years.
The voyage of discovery continues…..
Just discovered PITCHER is postponed:o
i discovered how difficult movie making can get no matter if its just one minute long…
i discovered the restlessness one feels to get feedback about their movies…
-i discovered that one can make a simple movie using a digicam with zero budget and get a 3 star rating from some viewers while people spending crores on moviemaking dont
i discovered a place where there is atleast some audience for my stupid little ideas….
i discovered how talented matt damon is…(the Bourne series effect)….
i discovered majid majidi( my favourite) and GOODFELLAS thnx to pfc….
i discovered like all that india cud actually be world champions ( so wat if its 20:20)
i discovered that after all the fuss smoking still can be shown on screen…..
i rediscovered manoj kumar :d
Creatively, I discovered that writing a creative piece and getting it just right is probably the toughest job on earth..
Writing almost eats up your organs, it melts u from inside, it throws u into a feeling of depression arising out of moments of total social disconnect and negativity.
It is not a profession where happiness, ecstacy and a hunky dory attitude can keep u afloat. It taught me in a weird way, that if u r happy while writing something creative, you r probably not doing it right. Its always and only a certain degree of pessimism that can aid creativity…..
i discovered that the:
1. MOVIES CAN BE MADE WITHOUT THE SCRIPT :- JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM
2.TISCA CHOPRA IN TZP:)
3.KARAN JOHAR OWNS A MUTUAL MASTURABATION CLUB=))
4.RAMU A NEW KING OF FLOPS MOVIES*-:)
5.A MOVIE FOR THE PFC,BY THE PFC,FROM THE PFC:NO SMOKING8->
may be continued…..
I discovered the two faces of the “tribute” culture oso and johny gadar…i discovered pankaj kapur in blue umbrella. i discovered an indian film i couldnt understand no smoking.
I did not discover. I realized that -
two people independent of each other can come up with the same shitty idea, and if the other is closer to market than you, KILL IT.
the year that indian cinema becomes a force in the world is still a ways away.
u can learn something from even a shitty script
there are far more talented people than me, as witnessed on PFC1 - the egg/supermarket movie guy, george, shekhar. I will out-work them though.
The beauty and masterpiece that is Requiem for a Dream.
I Discovered “Ayesha Takia”,.. :x
Looking forward:)
I discovered that cinema loves me back with a fervor far greater than what I have for it. So much so, that it held my hand during the darkest phase of my life.
In the auditorium of life, when everything else was dark, it egged me on and I, like the first time when I discovered this fascinating medium, was looking at what was unraveling ahead of me, totally oblivious of the darkness surrounding me.
DISCOVERED THAT HOLLYWOOD FILMS ARE STILL AS GOOD AS ANY OTHER FILMS
what did I discover? well, let’s see…
that Rajat Kapoor’s Mithya (heard it is at last releasing in February) has taken him to another level as a director…
(once again found out) that good films always do not make to the BO marquee - Manorama Six Feet Under, Johnny Gaddar…
that Jahnu Barua is making Har Pal, a romantic Hindi film that will have music by Pritam (Barua’s first film Aparoopa (Assamese) / Apeksha (Hindi) had some fine music by Bhupen Hazarika…
that Prroshant Narayannan will at last again make an appearance on the big screen during 2008…
that Rituparno Ghosh has three completed and unreleased films - Khela, Sunglass and the Last Lear…
that a director can make a blue film that the censors give a ‘U’ certificate to - Saawariya…
that an SRK film can be both an unquestionable critical and BO success, for the first time that is - Chak De, India!…
that for the electronic media and to a great extent also the print media, writing on cinema has ceased to be about writing on cinema, it has become writing about glamour and stars only…
For Everybody at PFC…Heres a discovery to start the year with : http://fulmarxx.net ! Go for it ! :)
I discovered Indian cinema was even greater than I thought and that an Indian movie (No Smoking) could be number one of my “top ten” of the year…
I discovered French cinema wasn’t as bad as I thought, and that young French directors could still make wonderful movies such as “La graine et le mulet” (by Abdellatif Kechiche, you MUST watch that movie)
I discovered my friends whose opinion is very important to me and know a lot about cinema could totally misunderstand James Gray’s new movie, the wonderful “we own the night”
and I even discovered Shahrukh Khan could disappoint me in trying to be someone he’s not, in the horrible musical number “Dard-E Disco” ;)
discovered that the original “six pack abs” was always with SRK..the one with me was a counterfeit…:o
@ P(L)AYABACK
(fullmarxx)
Nice one,. kuch kerna padega yaar:)
@ Shekhar ! Karo ! Karo ! Already 2008 ! Dont be Late ! March 25th
I have discovered for myself the Indian Cinema and in some sense became addict of it.
@ P(L)AYBACK
tu bhi ker raha hai kya?
I dont know yet ! :)
tu saalaaa:)
At the risk of coming across as gate-crashing the hallowed halls of filmmaking, Jan 1, 2007 saw me making a resolution to do a short.
Uptil now, the only thing that made me feel remotely connected to films was the 400-odd films I saw each year and the cinema-like imagery I was able to cook up in the many short stories I wrote.
But then, I managed to pull it off- I made a short film! It’s almost ready and should the light of day very soon.
Woohooo…!
And in the process my respect for filmmakers has gone up multifold. It’s hard work that may not pay! So, anyone that completes a film needs to be appreciated… and it does not matter that the bar for filmmaking has come down so low that virtually anyone can make a film now-a-days. Power to all!
i discovered
1. Khosla ka Ghosla(2006) -
i love this film, so indian. i admire the makers. finally i felt like i saw an ‘indian’ film.
2. Anurag Basu -
will always be grateful to him for ‘Life in a Metro’ . Its a very important film that had to be made. my salutes to him. brilliantly done. his love and sincerity for the film is evident in all the visuals. super editing. performances are unbelievable. shilpa shetty shocked me. i would really like to know if the performances of best supporting role award winners of 2007 in international awards ceremonies are really/actually better than all the ones from metro. i think we are really underrating ourselves.
3. that Reviewing and rating movies regularly can halt your growth as a person -
in other words, stating and analysing/justifying ur opinion on things continuously will make u a sick person.(as in, mentally sick)
my opinion today might not be the same in 3 or 5 or 10 years from now. i grow every year. actually every two years i feel that i was so immature 2 yrs back. i am growing. i dont see these reviewers/raters grow. they cant. if they grow, theyl be called inconsistent. its such a sick job really. break free , get peace, live life.
(again, i could be wrong. il know in two years i guess. lol)
4. Ennio Morricone -
http://pageclutter.blogspot.com/2008/01/ennio-morricone-great-music-composer.html

@ Indraneel,…where did u see Ranvir Sheroys “TALENT” ? Its amusing,…cos he doesnt have any !!! :P
morph, do check out Downey’s other great works - Chaplin, natural born killers…
I discovered…..:-?
….that the Indian film industry sucks when it comes to making thought provoking films (barring a few). There is no proper function of time and space in our films
….it’s very frustrating to look for a job in the film industry and people working have an over-bloated ego (anyone wanna help me out here?):-w

@ Tushar.
5. I discovered Guillermo del Torro is not very popular in Spain.
Huh? Where did you get that idea?
I discovered so many things Hindi film wise… but I am constantly learning things on that front.
I guess my greatest discovery of 2007 would be Tulsi Kumar. What a voice!
i too discoverd that i can sleep through a movie.(transformers)rididculous..
@tushar..where did you get that piece of info about guillermo del toro??
yes i also discovered that “malena”is a decent movie uptill where i have reached..atleast cinematically.
some great discoveries there…hav to add few more…yes, discoverd that even i cud sleep during the films…first was haan maine bhi pyaar kiya hai, second was saawriya..
…its so difficlut to make even one minute film. but then a bad film is a bad film. the hard work in the prcoess doesnt justify a bad film anyway.
…its so easy to write…he is frustrated in life n its equally diffcult to say the same through camera
….discovered again…most filmmakers dont know how to take criticism n healthy criticism means “no bad words”…
First and foremost I discovered PFC while searching for info on Sudhir Mishra’s earlier films, a big thank you to khoya khoya chand for that. With this site, I discovered an entire community of people with genuine passion for cinema.
I discovered the Canadian film “Eastern Promises”
I discovered that after being disappointed by countless films that call themselves fantasies (eg. Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter,etc..) and almost making my mind up about the genre, that I actually love the fantasy genre in the form of a film called “Stardust.”
I discovered Indian cinema can still rock with films like “Johnny Gadaar.”
I discovered the meaning of life on multiple evenings, only to forget it the next morning.
I discovered,
