When hope was all around on First day of every month : A Kishor Kumar song created history

First moment is always special. It can be first ever meeting, first ever visit to a place, first ever watching of some piece of art etc. It can be first day of month, first month of a year or first hour of a day or first moment of the beginning of anything which we like.

There is always a different energy level before the people in these “first” moments. But in present days hectic life style and rush of meeting up the dead lines, perhaps one does not always remain alert to really notice that today is the first day of another month. Some people notice that its first date of a month but that excitement has been lost which used to be there till some years ago. Perhaps money is more and so much is happening around the people that sensitivity needed for this kind of small thing has been lost.

Intrusion of TV and Internet in the daily life also should be the reason among many other reasonss behind this insensitivity. Mind is hardly in relaxed state when doing nothing. Something should be done all the time as that keeps people in sane mode. And Internet is the biggest occupier in this field. Nothing can keep one in illusion of doing, learning something than this virtual world.

Earlier for working class people first day of every month used to be a special day as this was the day which was scheduled to get them their salaries. First day of the month was a Salary Day.

Corruption was less and was not spread in all the departments of working world. People were entirely dependent on their salaries so naturally Salary day used to be a special day.
In many old films we all have seen scenes of kids requesting or insisting their parents to bring them toys or clothes or of bicycle or anything which they like and parents used to reply,” Beta, pehli tarikh ko tankha milne do tab sab la dunga”.

Or we have seen in many films, wives asking their husbands to buy something for them and they also used to reply,”Bas is baar tankha milne do sabse pehle tumhare liye Saree – la dunga”.

We have seen characters waiting for 1st day of every month because that day was fixed for salary. They w’d get salary and w’d pay the bills and then w’d try to make budget for rest of the month.

Salaried class people were the lead or important characters in hindi films and films represented a large section of society and they touched issues relevant to their lives. When characters say things with which ordinary people can feel an association then they accept the characters and they accept the films also and then there is not a clash since beginning between the film and its content and audience. This clash is occurring now a days and audiences face this clash since the very beginning of the films because characters represent a class which they hardly have seen. In the present era’s films, characters will be unemployed but will live a royal life. They have no worries if they don’t earn anything because atleast on screen they live king size life. They wear good and stylish clothes, eat in good restaurants and hang out with boy/girl friends. Everybody is chilled out there. Everybody is so cool as if living in the heaven.

And working class has been almost disappeared from hindi films. What to say about writers coming from rich class when writers coming from middle and lower middle class are not writing characters having connection with ground realities. Its not necessary that characters should always be real and they can be imaginary but then they have to be characters about which audiences say that people should be like this. So either characters representing real people work or character which motivate people to be like them work better.

Now struggling characters are missing atleast from the hindi cinema. Struggle to make a career, and earn a better place in their area of skills is disappeared and characters are almost well fed and TENSION has replaced the struggle. Now they have everything so they search tussles, tensions and writers are unable to create characters which look like real audiences and still inspire them because they are given some characters.

Writers don’t mind creating unclear characters whose background is never clear. And its not only about writers coming without doing any kind of struggle in their lives but its about writers who have seen a good degree of struggle in life.

Salaries are more now and in comparison to 70s and even 80s they have been increased multi fold. A good number of people have reached in to upper middle class because they get good salaries. A good number of people have crossed the barrier of lower middle class and have reached in to the class of middle class. But still we have a large number of people existing in poor and lower middle class and these people definitely outnumber the total population of riche, upper middle and middle class people.

They face more struggles in their day to day life. Films are entertainment for them and for years hindi films have been providing them entertainment and education also in so many areas. Hindi films were part of their lives and majority of characters belonged to their classes. They could easily associate with the characters of those films because characters wore clothes, suitable to show their economic class, they lived in suitable houses and they behaved in normal suitable manner which was acceptable to a large section of people.

* * * * * * * *

So when it was often repeated that more than 70% population of India lived in villages (there is not much difference here inspite of a heavy immigration towards cities) and working class was the group on which, for which films were made, then either All India Radio or Radio Cylon used to broadcast a song in the morning of first day of every month and song was heard almost in all the houses wherever there was even one film music lover.

Song was played every month and people expected that song to start the first day of every month. It was part of their life.

Song belongs to film Pehli Taarikh (1954) starring Nirupa Roy and Raja Nene. Raja Nene was also the director of the film. Music Director was Sudhir Phadkey and the singer who gave hopeful, young and energetic voice to this amazingly happy song was none other than Kishor Kumar.

And Lyricist of this beautiful song was Qamar Jalalabadi .

Enjoy the lyrics of Qamar Jalalabadi

Din Hai Suhaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Din Hai Suhaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai

Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Bivi Boli Ghar Zaraa Jal Di Se Aanaa, Jal Di Se Aanaa
Shaam Ko Piyaaji Hamen Sinemaa Dikhaanaa, Hamen Sinemaa Dikhaanaa
Karo Naa Bahaanaa Haan Bahaanaa Bahaanaa
Karo Naa Bahaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Kis Ne Pukaaraa Ruk Gayaa Baabuu
Laalaaji Ki Jaan Aaj Aayaa Hai Kaabu Aayaa Hai Kaabu
O Paisaa Zaraa Laanaa Laanaa Laanaa
O Paisaa Zaraa Laanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Bandaa Bekaar Hai Qisamat Ki Maar Hai
Sab Din Ek Hai Roz E Aitabaar Hai
Mujhe Naa Sunaanaa Haan Sunaanaa Sunaanaa
Mujhe Naa Sunaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Daftar Ke Saamane Aae Mehamaan Hain
Bade Hi Sharif Hain Puraane Meharabaan Hain 2
Are Jeb Ko Bachaanaa Bachaanaa Bachaanaa
Jeb Ko Bachaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Dil Beqaraar Hai Soe Nahin Raat Se
Sethaji Ko Gam Hai Ki Paiso Chalo Haath Se
Are Luutegaa Khazaanaa Khazaanaa Khazaanaa
Luutegaa Khazaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Ai Sinemaawaalon Aao Aao Khel Mazedaar Hai
O Khel Mazedaar Hai Ji Khel Mazedaar Hai
Aagaa Hai Bhagavaan Hai Kishor Kumaar Hai
Nimmi Gitaa Baali Hai Ashok Kumaar Hai
Naragis Raaj Kapuur Hai Dilip Kumaar Hai
Giton Kaa Tuufaan Hai Naach Ki Bahaar Hai, Naach Ki Bahaar Hai
Paanch Aane Kaa Das Aanaa 3
Are Vaapas Nahin Jaanaa Jaanaa Jaanaa
Vaapas Nahin Jaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai
Milajul Ke Bachchon Ne Baapu Ko Gheraa, Baapu Ko Gheraa
Kahate Hain Saare Ki Baapu Hai Meraa, Baapu Hai Meraa
Khilaune Zaraa Laanaa, Khilaune Zalaa Laanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Pahali Taarikh
Din Hai Suhaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Khush Hai Zamaanaa Aaj Pahali Taarikh Hai
Pahali Taarikh Aji Pahali Taarikh Hai

A song could connect with millions of people and represented their feelings and helped them in establishing a good mood.

A song became part of the lives of several generations for decades. A song which became a history itself.

Very well written RK…. the song which has created history. Those days ( 50’s and 60’s ) SLBC had so many different programmes based on different themes ( Badalte Saathi, naye naghme, etc ) but this song was a point of attraction to one and all. The only other “regular” competitive slot, those days, was the KLSaigal song played every morning at a specific time ( cannot remember the exact time, but can find out from my archives ). People used to use this song like an alarm.
Anyways coming back to the song in question, the people, the films, the producers, the MD’s, the lyricists, the singers - all of them are losing “innocence”. The same innocence that reflected in “pehli taarikh” and hundreds of such songs.
Sudhir Phadke had told once to a friend of mine, that he called Kishore for the song because he had heard Kishore in one or two films and also in social gatherings. Apart from KK, Sudhir Phadke was the ideal choice to sing this song ( I have heard a few SP’s marathi comedy songs around the same year ) but SP ( and QJ - why would the otherwise non-existant name of kishore in the early 50’s be included in the lyrics of this song ?) gave Kishore a free hand to develop the song in his own style.
A few places in the song can be easily declared as SP-style-music ( by hardcore SP fans, me included ) but the hardcore KK fans can easily make out the Kishore’s overal “contribution” to the song. Kishore had been singing in various college/friend Adda’s and his improvisations came to use in this fabulous song. He used to write nonsense-words and then have them sing in functions. He used to use daily words in life in songs. He used to sing yesteryears songs inside certain songs or scenes in a film ( I am currently researching the same). He used his happy, sad, grim, joyful experiences in his life and “added” a beauty to what the MD or lyricist had thought of, originally. This trait of kishore made him different than any other actors/singers who came before or after him. This made one and all in the industry say that Kishore was a born-genius. When I hear people saying that such and such singer is not a trained one “just like” Kishore kumar was, I feel like slapping them for making comparisons. For they do not know what/whom they are talking about !

    @Kcp,

Thats very informative comment. Thanks. Did not know that Sudhir Phadke himself could sing this song.
I could not find this song on You tube or in audio format else it could have been helpful for those who never have heard this precious song.

    RK and KCP,

It is very interesting to Picture India, sitting outside India.. The millions of salary class people of India still waits for the Salary day! (barring a few lacs nouveau riche (mostly from IT sector) and call center generation)..

Be one of them and know!

I agree with you Pavan. Even out of India, I see many labor-class people all over, who wait for the salary day. They have different dreams as to spend the money. But all I want to say that the innocence is losing somewhere in this “business” & “fast” world. The value for money is never the same.

Inflation has gone high. To buy a home in Mumbai is sort of impossible. Unless you are an NRI or a corepati or have baap dada ki zameen. So Roti Kapda Aur Makan or the above song is still relevant in this era.

    @Pavan,
It does not have anything to do with inside or outside take. Changes have come. Social Economic prefrences have changed. Poverty is still there but due to technology while things like communication tools which are seen as essential things are seen with almost everybody no matter which economic class they belong to. Mobiles will be seen with almost everyone. Earlier class not able to enjoy many such things was having a large number of people and all were called middle and poor class and only rich class was able to have some facilities like cars, telephones etc.
Because service class was doing duty with full devotion so he had less energy left in the evening or any additional time while on duty to think to do some business or earning extra through some other means so we can say people were having a contentment or were forced to have that, because of overall scenario. Now Govt. job is basically seen as a launching pad and from where one can have assurance that he will have a regular source of income and at duty a person can be involved in making plans to earn more from other sources.Teacher was teaching then and now for most of the teachers, their being teachers bring them status of an active teacher and it brings them tutions in the morning and in evening. So that contentment is lost.
Police people have become like Father of Inspector of the story of Munshi Premchand Namak Ka Daroga. Now monthly salary is just a regular income as they all know from where several thousands can be made every month.
Surely people are there waiting for salary, as people are still there waiting every day to get the minimum wages of less than 100 Rs. In morning they make queue to get the chance to earn that minimum wage and from afternoon onwards they wait for that hour when they would get money around Rs 80=00.
Point is people living on this margin and people still counting for first day of the month have been disappeared from the hindi cinema. Earlier cinema cared for this section. Now cinema cares for those who are quoted in your comment. Now few thousand people taking home a good salary is the target audience for major producers and distributors.
They say they want to make film for masses but they dont say clearly that for them masses means a crowd which can shell out few hundred Rs on Tickets during first three days or first weekend. They care for 3 din ki chandani.
They care for the fact that 10 people can give them 2500 Rs in a multiplex while single screen theatre in a small city need atleast 60-70 people to bring them same amount of money.
Preferences of producers and distributors have been changed.
We can not turn away our faces from this fact.
