When Mr Ajay Muley became a prostitute
When Mr Ajay Muley became a prostitute.
This is completely fictitious post stemming from my infertile and derivative imagination. Any resemblance to any characters either living or dead is purely co incidental and completely unintentional.
“Sir I saw your last short film… I didn’t like it at all !!”
“Why ???”
“I didn’t see any logic behind it.. What is the purpose of the film ?? The climax is unsatisfying and resolution-less !!!” I realised i had ventured more than i had wished to.
Muley was uncharacteristically silent. In the past when I had criticised his scripts, the short films of Martin Scorcese/David Lynch over a drink in this very studio-house here in Juhu (paradise for film directors), Muley used to taunt me with “What is the purpose of your life ?? Do u ever want to be a film maker or just a wannabe film maker ???”
I used to shut up back then.Today when i had come to congratulate him on kickstarting his incredibly original and sensitive Majid MAjidi-sque film “Kadam Aasman Par” (Feet on the Sky) with the leading star-actor of the industry - Sarfaraz “Method” Khan…I had deliberatly started his favorite arguement on “purpose of cinema”, “logic in film”… so as to warm him up to the usual passionate debates. He didnt say word today.
In the past he used to kick my ass on any stupid comment i used to make… and i used to shut up ( I must admit i used to quite enjoy it actually). Today the tables have been swapped….or perhaps I should say the chairs are swapped !!!
Muley was pensively stirring hish whisky and I commented “Sir the whisky is good”
Annother mother fucking stupid comment. On any other day Muley would’ve reprimanded “Fuck u Kartik !!! Whisky is always GOOD!!! stop cracking commercial crappy dialogues”
The uncomfortable silence bothered me.
Thank God better sense prevailed and i turned the topic of discussion towards the ever reliable Tarantino.
“I thought Natural Born Killers was pathetic”
“Fuck u Kartik !!! Tarantino is Khuda !!!The script of Natural Born Killers is awesome.. the director fucked up it..”
Ahh those honest cuss words were music to my ears, much more than the past 30 minutes of silence that had enveloped Muley before.
“But that is the job of the director ..to change the script according to..”
“To change for the better.. not to shit around!!”
“Then Tarantino should’ve sued him ..or at least raised his voice and not just sell his creative soul for some thousand dollars..”
“He did..he also disowned the film completly.. He wasn’t a prostitute. Tarantino can never be a prostitute. He cant ever sell his soul. Didn’t he make ‘Dogs and ‘Fiction later ?? He is my guru.. Don’t u dare say a word agianst him. Woh Khuda hai ” Muley retorted.
Muley was one of my gurus too. Tarantino was there but .. Muley is bigger for me. I would never criticise Tarantino’s films in front of him over whisky. but i could take that liberty with Muley. Muler was more ‘godder’ for me.
Gobbling at the chicken fried rice he had ordered from a nearby restaurant, i said “Sarfaraz must be like a big high for you. He is an amazing actor.”
“Yes he is..very methodical and meticolous…goal oriented and perfect. ” Muley sobered down instantly to a prepared reply, almost as if a 17 yr old drunk teenager had seen his mom in front of him. The response was as mechanical and rehearsed as it can be.
“Did he like the script as soon as he heard it ??”
“He loved it. The first 7 days of shooting..u should’ve seen the rushes..he was performing so naturally..the lines just flew off his mouth. He had never done a character like this before. But an actor has an image and has to stick by it. I don’t blame him for…”
I dared to get a little intimate ..something i had never done in my life..
“But Sir it’s your baby.. you can’t just allow him to..”
“I should be thankful that at least a newcomer like me is getting my name on the credits as a scriptwriter and creative consultant. I just sit at home and work from here…if they need my advise they call me up.I’ve stopped going to the sets”
Uncomfortable silence.. The chicken fried rice was over. so was the conversation and whisky.
“Sir i think i should be leaving …”
“Shut up and wait here.. I’ve got an Italian film… its called rhgkjhsgkaskj (hadn’t even heard of the name). You better watch it. Its fantastic”
“Sir u ??”
“I’m going off to sleep. ”
The film started playing… i was least intrested in it.
10 minutes into the film.. I could hear Muley snoring.
He was using the 7 hard bound drafts of “Kadam Aasman Pey” as his pillow !!!!!
I switched off the film.
I waited till the first local train had presumably started running, and i left the house.

Gottit, TZP…Is this for real…or just out of imagination?
“This is completely fictitious post stemming from my infertile and derivative imagination.”
I have never met the guy….
Hota hai yaar kartik.. paapi pet ke liye karna padta hai. To get somewhere you have to first get on to the first available vehicle even if it is a ghoda gadi.
In todays world it is immature to have ideals which dont work. What sounds good to your ears may cost the man his life, his career, his future. He cannot live by your ‘hero worshipping him’.. he needs ‘roti kapda makaan ‘ When films are a career, then idealism has to be mixed with pragmatism.. But for those who simply want to comment on makers, this is the typical pathway.
good post though…
KIDILAM KK!!!
can i make a reservation for the rights ?!!:)
Mr. Ajay Muley/Kartik-
after reading it, i thought it’s short and bitter-sweet..but again i scrolled up to check the length, that wasn’t enough, then i scrolled up and up to only find that it wasn’t short at all, but the writing made it look so…it really stirred up my imagination…:)>-
it somehow reminded me of the classic matrix scene..
“spoon boy-Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead… only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you’ll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself”
btw..i almost started searching for the film “rhgkjhsgkaskj”…lol:))
LOL jai ….
Aman - Actually the idea isnt about selling ur soul for roti kapda makaan… that isnt the point.
The point is like some big/rich and famous child-less couple deciding to take your child away (by adopting your kid) from u because the kid is soooooooo cute… and because you will not be able to afford the child’s schooling/living expenses etc. (Filmy example - i admit)
You are left to a mere nobody ….
And then there’s no point in complaining.. to think of it.. i dont blame Ajay muley either for not taking a stand. Perhaops it had been you or me in his place.. we might have lost ourselves to whisky as well !!!
Dpac - rights ??? we will need to confirm with Mr Sarfaraz khan !!!

I’d an intution that this topic would come up in PFC, but never thought you’d (KK)take it up after the Sanjay Gupta episode on desitrain, keep the fire burning - One day I visualise you to be among the stars whom you admire today. And, I’ll be clapping with joy as a humble reader of PFC on your success.:)
Good one Karthik. I loved the part about tarantino. He is indeed “Khuda”.

Miss all the subtelty….
Vasan- Dude you have GOT TO DO A Sarafraz khan mimic when we meet at Trilok !!!!
In my opninion Mr. Ajay Mule is no prostitute. He did what he did in order to allow himself a second chance in this highly competitive industry. Ok, so his baby was “taken” away from him, or he “compromised” it. But he also realizes how important it is to have a foot in the door. He had a foot in the door, he did not want to lose it. Imagination doesn’t only come once. After this film, people will know who he is, and he has another shot to make his name as a director, with another story. If he is stuck up on ownership of his material and tells Mr. Khan to fuck off, he may never have a chance to get the project made because then it will be labeled as the project Mr. Khan threw away. In an idealistic world, it seems great and honorable to hold on to protect your vision and stick it up to the system. Mr. Mule is a realist who is willing to make a sacrifice at this point for the greater good of his career. It makes him a realist, not a prostitute.
vijay - watever u have said.. can be exactly said for a prostitute as well.
I know what ur trying to say… i think Ajay mule is a realist and perhaps u or me in the man’s shoes wouldve done the same… I’m sure of it.
But still … may be its a different thought..
Perhaps the post shldve been “When Ajay muley was forced to become a prostitute”
What Ajay Mule did was his own decision. We are nobody to judge these people’s personal decisions. At the end of the day, I am sure he knew and evaluated the consequences between both options, and based on his ability to deal with those consequences made his decision. It is not for us to judge and call him a prostitute for doing so. What more do we know about this man? What do we know about his responsibilities? Maybe he has a family to feed. Maybe he has been through the idealist approach before without success. Without acknowledging the circumstances that led him to make his decision, who are we to go to extremes and label him a prostitute? A mother who sleeps with another man may be chastized as a whore, but the mother who sleeps with another man to feed her starving children with no other alternative is a hero.
I’m with vijy on this one I think.
I feel sory for Muley. Esp after I read Khan’s interview. Now after reading this blog it leaves a bad taste.
vijay - actually we’re both on the same side.
May be i shldve reworded myself better.
im not passing a jdugement on the man Muley- whom i loveeeeeeeeeeee. I’m in awe of him and you can sense that in the post. He is a hero for me.
Though much against his wish … he is being made to do something which (had circumestances been different), he wouldve never done.
If u notice the post, muley never raises his voice. he silently accepts the harsh reality. Because of his circumestnaces .. he is FORCED to become a prostitute .. he is a fallen hero for me. I sympathise him and am sad for him. He is being made to do something which he would have never accepted…. but for the gruelling circumstances he is in !!!
Please pllease - re read the post … do u think my tone throughout the article is sympathetic .. or judgemental ?????
Your post is sympathetic, your follow up comments are judgemental. And the word “prostitute” itself I felt throughout was a poor choice in describing a person who chooses or is forced to make certain sacrifices. I think despite the fact that there is a sacrifice made or forced, there is a dignity to this character. Labeling him as a prostitute strips him off that dignity, because it takes a lot out of oneself to make a sacrifice like this. Your intent as you have explained is to empathize. The outcome because of your choice of words reads to be very judgemental.
@vijay same words - different meanings …
watever u say anyway
KK, you asked me for my reaction to the write-up, I gave you my most honest response. I am not trying to persuade you to concur.
Sacrifice comes from the word “sacred”.. often times we sacrifice to make something sacred… I think this is the case with Mr. Muley… he realized if he did not compromise his personal interest in HIS project, there may not have been a project at all… as far as I know he is STILL being acknowledged not just as the writer but the brainchild of this film… This is something he can be damn proud of… the man still has his dignity and integrity in tact… someones going to take notice of this mans brilliance, his talen… this industry may be a lot of things, but I don’t think its blind enough not to see what WE can see… and someone else is going to see that talent as well… this is Mr. Muley’s first major stand, not his LAST…
Muley ka Khan ke paas jana was like kisi budding kali ka Shakti Kapoor ke pass jana.
Khan to script ki ma bhen karne wala tha hi.
Is interview mwin, Sarfarz ne Khan ki aur maar di jiske baad shayad koi producer Mule pe paisa bhi na lagaye.
Kahair, duniya hai, chalta hai, hota hai f*** f***

KK // Let’s consider this: I am a to-be-established musician/lyricist. I wrote an amazing song - my dream song per se. And I want this song to be sung by THE BEST singer, who happens to be my friend - because we kicked off our careers with the same film, in 1984. My friend, the best singer guy, doesn’t like the way I tuned the song - so he doesn’t want to sing it anymore. We sit down, discuss, and decide that his tune is better than my tune. I agree for him to tune and sing the song. Now, why would I do that?
Because 1) I am happy for my song to be sung by him and reach the wider audience, 2) public knows that this is my song, 3) I am getting paid for the work, 4) I am getting to know the devious ways of concept selling in film/song making, and most importantly 5) he is still my friend.
If this makes someone a pro in someone’s dictionary then so be it. The effing world’s full of them so what’s one more, anyway?
and forgot to mention that it was an amazing write up. vintage KK all the way.
KK Singh tujhe kitni baar kaha hai teer mat soda kar…..KK…..teer mat soda kar….for some bad films made you wrote a post called
KK, are you writing about Taare Zameen pe…writer and could not be director - Amit or Amay Gupte and Aamir Khan…but they are supposed to be fast friends..or that is what AK said in an interview?????
Being the friend of Mule, KK sees the other side of the fence, something we lesser mortals cannot see.
AK’s side of the story caasnot be 100% true, sugar coated hai, usko bhi apni image ki chinta hai. He also knows that Mule will not strike back with other part of the story because Mule ki awaz koi sunega nahi.
I hope Mule ko paise ache mile ho…
I’m sure there’s a very good reason for all of this.
I had a pretty interesting interview a few days back …and it wasnt at all journalistic..it was a job interview …..
and the key takeaway i got was …..
bete jab tak tu stage tak nahi pahunchega tum logon ko kya bolega ?
for all the anticlockwise masturbation surrounding art and freedom of expression and all that jazz….
u got to get to the point where all this works out na ?
Na.
That’s why I asked.
