Why did they go away?

The climax of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge is perhaps one of the most watched and loved ones in the history of Indian cinema…romantics will vouch for it.
As Simran’s father’s (Amrish Puri) grip loosens and and a dumbstruck Simran (Kajol) looks at him only to realise that his disciplinarian guardian has appoved of her love and is asking her to go away with her love, Raj. Simran starts chasing the train and manages to get into it where her beloved Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and his father (Anupam Kher) are waiting for her.

Happy ending and waisa wasool.

But this is something what has struck me ever since I saw the film for the first time. Why did Simran and Raj go away in the train when finally Simran’s father was convinced about their relationship? I mean when both the parties had finally agreed, then the latter part of the story i.e; marriage would be the next step…so why the trio board the train and go off. It wasn’t as if Raj’s visa was getting expired so he had to pack off immediately or the Indian government was trying to throw him out of the country or anyone was after their lives that they had to whisk away.

Raj stood at the station waiting for Simran and anticipating that her father would get her there. Had Simran come without her parents’ consent then the couple’s going away from that place would have been justified. But when everything ended well…then why did they run away? Wouldn’t it have been logical for Raj to get out of the train and stay back and finish off the rituals ala shaadi and stuff…the families being so convention oriented, they would have loved to have sagaai, mehendi and shaadi. And Simran’s family being very orthodox and religious would have logically wanted to finish shaadi and then send off their daughter rather the other way around as shown in the film.

But hindi films mein logic dhoondhna manaa hai…so I should stop wondering.

And for anyonw who can explain me this climax…I would be highly grateful.

Inane post :) I know!!

In lighter vein, they had bought the tickets, so they did not want to waste it..so they ran away. Also the train had already started….

    Illuzion!
its a film with dramatic effect. Simran and family were living at London and they came back only to marry Simran with the son of Satiosh Shah. So when this marriage was not happening then Amarish Puri and family again could have gone back to London.
    Is not it?
Well there seems to be another RK whose comment is mixed with me. Comment no 2 “In lighter vein, they had bought the tickets, so they did not want to waste it..so they ran away. Also the train had already started…. ” is not made by me.

Oz bhai whats happening. again identity confusion?

Indian Railway has a fine Rs 1000/- (or so) for pulling the emergency chain for wrong reasons. Plus a jail sentence. Might be that Simran & Raj did not want to have their honeymoon in jail.\:d/

arey they just fled to emphasize the sense of escape, films like that should always end with a train going or a plane stopping or a mob running…:)

public ko normal, logical end achha nahi lagta, or else they ll say, arey ye to hum bhi karte!:-\
    majaa nahi aaya…

there has to be a grand finale in the masala film, a huge qawwali song with cut-ins of the film’s powerful scenes, a stage performance, a bike/car/cycle/bailgaadi/rickshaw race, or a melodramatic shaadi with guns n goons…

Arrei Nahi yaaroon… Simran’s dad wanted her to “live” with Raj and see how things would go…after “living-in” with him for a period of time..only then would he be convinced that Simran still loves raj…Kyon Love aaj…Kal Nahi…Amrish Saab was playing it safe…You know..Win-Win…Lol!!! Waise bhi..Simran didnt need any kapde too…Raj was “RICH BITCH”( Dave Chappelle here?)

Anupam Kher had earlier got cozy wid Himani Shivpuri in the sarson ke khet and he’s frightened that Amrish Puri might come to know it sooner or later and if they stop, then ek hi mandap mein do shaadiyan ho jayegi.. that’s why they don’t stop..

    Illuzon,
In lighter vein,i can write a 100 more reasons as to why they did’nt stop.. but,it does’nt seem that u’ve written this post in order to get light responses..
it’s ok when u say that Hindi films mein logic dhoondhna manaa hai.. but i think DDLJ had a very logical ending..
The second half of d film is based in a village in Punjab.. Now,that is one part of the country where people are famous for not using logic, for being hot blooded and short tempered..
Even today,in villages, people place their pride above everything else.. Choti choti baaton pe khoon kharaaba ho jaata hai aaj bhi..
Yahan to bahut badi baat thi..
Parmeet Sethi who is all set to marry Kajol suddenly finds that she loves Shahrukh.. And remember,he is no gentleman like say Ajay Devgan was in HDDCS.. He is a hot blooded Punjabi..
He would die fighting for his honor rather than accept defeat..
He must’ve felt screwed jab Shahrukh se dosti ke naam pe itna bada dhoka milta hai.. woh bhi itne dino tak bewaqoof bante rehne ke baad..
upar se usse apni hi hone wali biwi ke saath jaate dekhna.. boy.. that’s like getting screwed from both sides.. jispe beet ti hai wohi yeh dard samajh sakta hai :)
And Amrish Puri knows that very well.. it’s he who let’s Kajol go and not Satish Shah or any other person..
Ek baar woh chale gaye phir koi kya kar sakta hai bhala ? Amrish Puri could’ve easily managed things on his own, than say,in the presence of Shahrukh and Kajol..
And they’ve never shown that Amrish Puri forgives Kajol.. He knows that somewhere, what
she has done is wrong.. Remember,he has given his word to Satish Shah.. Inspite of all this, the father in him realizes that no one will love his daughter more than Shahrukh.. She’ll be happy wid him..
In the last scene, they’ve shown that the train has almost left the platform when the father in him takes the decision at the last moment, and lets his daughter go.. Perhaps knowing that she might never come back to the village..
I think the ending was very apt and justified..
