This post is neither a review nor a comparison between the two movies.
It just so happens that these two ‘D’ movies released in the same week
and on the same day. I am just putting down a few observations and
points of why I watched Dostana in a multiplex and not Dasvidaniya.
Dasvidaniya seems to be a really good movie which will move people to
tears, the trailers show that there are moments of happiness and
sorrow, of unfulfilled dreams and unexpressed emotions. It has a
fantastic ensemble cast and Vinay Pathak is a joy to watch. I have
loved most of his movies in the recent past like KKG, Manorama 6Ft
Under, JGaddar, BFry etc. Inspite of all these I did not want to watch
Dasvidaniya in multiplex/theater.
Dostana has some peppy numbers, smallB and Priyanka Chopra; I did not
much care for JBraham because he can’t act to save his life forget
doing a comedy. In Garam Masala, AKumar and Paresh Rawal carried the
movie on their shoulder although JBraham had a meaty role. Anyways,
the trailers of Dostana looked like it was a fun-film with some nice
soundtrack, thankfully not a mindless comedy like SiK or Welcome. The
movie has fun moments, gags and laugh-riot.
So, what exactly do people look for when they goto watch a movie in a
multiplex or what did I look for:
1. first and foremost…paisa vasool; its got to be an entertainer
2. if it carries a message[swades/tzp] even better, thats actually a bonus
3. great starcast
4. good music and one superhit song at least
5. moments, if not message, that we can take back home
What happens with movies like Dasvidaniya is that, we save it for
another day where we can watch in seclusion, on dvd/tv because we
don’t want to be spending Rs.200/- in a multiplex and return home
moved, solemn and maybe depressed. Watching such soulful movie in a
theatre loses its meaning as soon as we step out of the theatre
because of the euphoria and the enthusiasm of the outside world. so,
we not only lose the movie but the message too.
I have saved another day to sit-by with some hot tea and marie
biscuits and watch Dasvidaniya with near and dear ones. There is a
famous quote ‘Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, others
just gargle’; same thing goes for movies too. I did not want to gargle
Dasvidaniya in a theatre, but will have it sip by sip at home some
day.
PS: This article was written quite sometime back[soon after watching
Dostana on 19th Nov] but was lying in the drafts folder, I am writing
it only today. Also, this is not just about Dostana and Dasvidaniya,
but the fate of any small budget movie with ensemble cast against a
big-budget movie with a good starcast and nice music, and of course a
few comic scenes at least.

@ Crazyrals
While there’s nothing wrong in watching Dostana in a multiples, let me tell you that there’s nothing depressing about Dasvidaniya either.it leaves you moist-eyed for sure @ the end, but thats after you’ve been smiling for most of the movie.Do watch it & you’ll realise what I’m saying.
Totally agree with Sethu… Dasvidaniya isn’t a depressing film at all… and just because it’s not a big-budget big-banner production, does NOT mean its not entertaining. Vinay Pathak is a magician… he can make even the most nerdy, awkward and seemingly bland characters very interesting. And Ranvir Shorey’s awesome in his cameo
Trust me, its a MUCH MUCH MUCH better film than Dostana…
Crazyrals am not sure, if ur analysis is Spot On.
Both Page 3 and Kisna were released on same date. Kisna seemed to have everything going for it, big banners, big names, music of ARR, promos.
But in the end Page 3 had the last laugh.
The fact is that the appeal of Big Banners is not as much as it was before.
How else would you account for YRF’s duds in the recent past, even though they had well known star cast?
@Sethumadhavan : i did see Dasvidaniya later on. wat i wrote in my post is tat on the given day 19th nov, i chose to spend 200 bucks in a multiplex for some wholesome entertainment. tats how movies like SiK and welcome become big hits
@Ratnakar Sadasyula : it was not an analysis, just my pov. and i feel tat this is how most of the ppl think when they go out to watch a movie, unless they r out there to watch a movie with some purpose.
@Tony Mera Naam : i agree with u. tats exactly wat i wrote, Dasvidaniya is a better movie and it deserves a more serene viewing. nowhere have i pulled down the movie
Dear Crazyrals,
No hard feelings against your pov as you call it, but by reading what you wrote many of the young and aspiring filmmakers and directors in the country may feel demoralised. Why i say this is very clear. Dostana…big budget movie…excellent starcast…big production banner…so basically everything associated with the movie is big, including the finances and funds which only the established director and producers can afford, totally opposite to what Dasvidaniya is. So when aspiring directors and moviemakers read aritcles such as yours, they would contemplate many times before venturing out. And i think we all should influence and encourage and motivate them to make good, excellent cinema which we can do by going to watch their films in cinema halls and multiplexs just as we would go for any big budget movie. Afterall all movies are meant for viewing at the big screens. Perhaps unknowingly you have sidelined a very decent effort.
@Sumit Gyan: the truth is tat the aspiring directors and film-makers already know it. tats why they come up with newer promotion strategies and of course innovative movie ideas. at the end of the day, a good movie will survive and be appreciated; if not now, maybe a few years down the line.
u must also realise tat movie watching in groups and gaggles happen on majority basis. so, if 4 of the 6 guys want to watch Dostana over Dasvidaniya, then u have to go with the group. if its a 3-3 vote then one person from either camp just gives up and compromises.
anyhow, i m sure they recover their cost later on through dvd/cd/satellite rights etc.
