Love Sex aur Dhoka blog by Dibakar BanerjeeThe digital eye surrounds us, on TV, on the net, on the CCTV camera that snoops into every step we take, the spy cam sex scandal we enjoy on prime time TV, the home movies we make, the guilty kiss we share with someone, holding out the mobile camera at an arm’s length and the MMSs that fly around the nation. The digitized, fuzzy faces, the strobing, jerky movements, the furtive glances, the nervous camera, the clumsy, choppy edit, the scratchy sound, the repetitive slo mo rewind and forward – to me all this is a new grammar of cinema. A language that is evolving as we speak, a toolset that is all our generation’s own – no one had this before. We ignore it, look down upon it, go and see films about uplifting themes featuring good looking people in well shot backlight fighting incredible odds to sing the climax song in GLORIOUS backlight. And yet millions of downloads tell another story about what people want to see. But that’s not cinema, right? It’s just amateur videos of real people doing kooky things right? Geeks and pervs with unzipped flies are into that right?

Look up film history. In the 1890s, cinema as we know started with film clips a few seconds long about trains coming into station, people crossing roads, a juggler juggling and yes, a woman taking a bath. People would a pay a nickel and peep into a SMALL screen and watch the birth of a new way of life.

We could be at another similar threshold, a century and small change later. Better use the digital eye to etch it’s own brand of anti cinema rather than try and follow a bogus filmic look through film lenses, and other tricks of technology to become just a me-too version of the original. I’m not interested in delivering the last word in the digital or film war – I would shoot on paper if there were a technology to do so. The only thing I’m interested in is the medium bringing its own, inseparable aesthetic to the content – and see where it takes us.

Hence, Love Sex aur Dhokha. A film that isn’t one.

What’s it about? my mum asked.

Everything.

Maane?

Er… about young people.

Like Ranbir Kapoor?

No. Like people.

Who’s acting?

People.

People act?

In this one they do.

When do we see it?

You may not like it.

Why?

Just. It’s … pushing some buttons.

What’s it called?

Love Sex aur Dhokha

….(silence)

….(silence)

….(silence)

….Dhokha, eh? Hmmmmm.

    Dibakar,

First let me just say the obvious — the poster is a good enough reason to go watch the movie. The poster is sex. It is heaven. It is tandoori chicken.

Secondly, if you are going the grainy digital cam way like David Fincher and a few others, then I laud your conviction and your intention.

Thirdly, did you come up with the ‘anti cinema’ phrase? It’s seductive. I’m going to quote it shamelessly from now on.

Fourth, Balaji? What happened to UTV?

Lastly, the ‘bogus filmy look’ that you are dissing is still pretty appealing. I’m still a sucker for grand images with beautiful lighting and photography. I hope this new Youtube revolution does not become anti-establishment to its core. Give me my viral video, and give me my Avatar. Then, give me everything in between.

  48. Hi Dibakar,

Have been wanting to tell you this for so long. That scene in OLLO, where the schoolgirls are getting out of the car in slo-mo, and the young turks ogling from the side – I said to myself, why does this film feel like a Martin Scorsese flick? Great nevertheless. Just so to ask you, how big has his influence been?

About LSD poster – I guess we’re all fixated with the Bunuel similarity, but methinks LSD works because it ‘advertises’ more than what Bunuel’s Obscure poster was – which didn’t ’say’ by way of darning lips. Here, like you have been saying, its instantly voyeuristic in the way it stares back at you and sucks you in.

All that aside, why can’t I find you on facebook :(

Too self pretentious and self congratulatory, I guess there is a story to be told with the choice of shooting format ..or is it another gimmick and indulgent fare like OLLO ? coming to basics..it’s just selling sex in name of voyeurism, shooting formats backed by gimmicks..all the blogs and write ups only talk about how it was shot and why it needs to be shot that way.. or maybe his own porn collection backed with a fantasy to shoot the same thing with actors? Good luck with the project Dibaker, hope at least indulgence will take a back seat here and you’ll give something good this time, not a film only you want to watch.

“it’s way way better than anything I’ve shot for LSD.” ..you seem to be only banking on the shooting format. Seems like that’s your only selling pitch. It’s not about me liking or disliking, whatever the film maybe about “intolerance and hypocrisy” I only wished you kept in audience in mind, after reading, seeing and hearing so much about OLLO before release, and when i finally saw it, it was the most disappointing fare, It was definitely not the best film ever made in recent times, check the audio sessions that was posted on PFC sometime ago that had ur interviews, they were the most self congratulatory, i mistook that for confidence, that is what got me excited to see OLLO.I hope history does not repeat again. Also I remember an age old wisdom “Sex sells” spice it up with some unusual camera angles and put it on a large screen, voila you have novelty, new cinematography, greatest LOOK like you have said “it’s way way better than anything I’ve shot for LSD “, so anyways you’ll generate some buzz with the film, if that is the only thing you desire from film making.

Hi Dibakar. Wanted to know where did you get the inspiration for the poster. I remember seeing some print ads previously- which were ‘inspired’ by a 1979 British Health Council ad (I wouldn’t know, but that’s what David Ogilvy said- in page 30 of Ogilvy on advertising).
    Here’s the original ad: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7fq1mm2vrl8/SEqci1V5ZyI/AAAAAAAAAkI/3y4rMmVMbV4/s1600-h/HealthEd79.jpg

I agree fully with you Dibakar.Cinema is just a little more than 100 years old medium and is still in the process of having a grammar of its own.The only grammar of cinema of which we talk about is also given and developed by the hollywood and mostly no one even dares to try it differently and which has been the saddest part and has hempered its growth. Also people try to replicate the aesthetics of cinema even in animation and video or digital and this has resulted in these mediums also being deprived of creativity. Now with smaller cameras and their ease of use allows us to play with and use them even more creatively.Your film and Anurag’s ‘Girl in the yellow boots’ now deserve a viewing for these reasons also.My best wishes to both of you!! :yahoo:

    Hi Dibakar,
Awesome poster and going by the bits and pieces of info available LSD sounds like one heady trip! will watch this weekend…somehow i feel that the viewing experience would be similar to abbas kiarostmi’s Ten…thats the weirdest use of hand-held digicam in any feature length movie that i’ve watched till date. Just out of curiosity…would you consider kierostami as an influence in your career ?

    Hi,

Sir just saw your film…and it is very well done! I thought the script was very intelligently written. I wanted to know sir if the initial trailer and I also noticed that other trailers of movies came during the intermission not before the movie started (which usually is the case)…Was this structuring inspired by grindhouse? I also read one of your twitter updates which said something like grindhouse is refreshing to watch or something…

Dear Dibakar, wonderful film there. I’m shooting currently on the EX3 for a project.

About the spy cams, were they really spy cams? or do you just give an impression of it? Because I dont understand how it can be blown up for the big screen without basic pixelation!??

    Hi Dibakar,
just saw your movie, its good. How you have interwoven the three stories gave me the kick.
its good you have used character driven projection of stories like blair witch project and the paranormal activity, but in story no.1 it looks a bit superficial, just giving away the tone of a movie.
    another thing,
music in your movies…its the awesome part.I congratulate you and Sneha for that.

Ma’r shaathey dekhechi! daroon! Although my friends mum at first ridiculed the title and made an age old comment,”kids these, what faaltoo movies they watch,no values, Kisi bacche ne banaya hoga” :P and then when we told her that its by the same “baccha” who directed KKG and OLLO, (She loved them btw) her eyes almost popped out and she didn’t know what to say next. :)
Judgemental orthodox aunty is now considering giving it a watch!

Once again,it was wow!Worth every penny! 5 stars.

    Goodluck, Ahona.
