« Jodha Akbar - Long Live the New K. Asif Saab | Home | Jodha Akbar:A Political Love Story of Mughal Period »

Wow, she is back!

Two things in my office makes me feel good. Always. One poster and one coaster. Call it cheap thrills or whatever but it works. Both pinned on a board just behind my deskstop. “I can but I wont” Thats written on the poster. I feel like saying the same to my boss and colleagues almost everyday. But cant. So, its the poster that does the talking.

The coaster has her picture on it. Mid-close. It was taken at the premiere of her debut film. She is smiling, wearing a golden yellow sari, standing in front of the poster of the same film. I saw the movie at the same premiere. Remember clapping for it when the credits rolled in the end. It continued for few minutes. And she was just superb. Like many, i also fell in love with her. Then and there. But then she did one more film and vanished. To many unanswered questions. Me and my friends argued so many times about her sudden exit from bollywood.

Its all about her priority.
What priority. we want her. For god’s sake, we really dont have good actresses.
But she wants to enjoy family life. She has a husband.
I give a damn. Family life…let her start hundred families in next birth. This birth, let her be in movies. Let her act. Please.
Many filmmakers thought alike. She was even touted as the next Smita Patil. But she vanished. I would look at the coaster and wonder, Will she ?

And now Chitrangada Singh is back!! The coaster is still there. And am flying high. I know many others who are feeling the same. Comeback is an exciting word. Comeback films ? Look on the right hand side panel. Take two guesses ? Got it ? Onir’s Sorry Bhai and Sudhir Mishra’s Aur Devdas.

(When the inevitable comparisons between Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D and Sudhir Mishra’s Aur Devdas will happen, i know which film i will start with. One extra point for Aur Devdas. )

Chitrangada in her interview with Rajeev Masand explains why she took off unexpectedly when everyone expected that she would enchant the audience with her beauty and talent:

The big question!

It just keeps coming back. It was nothing. At that moment I wasn’t ready to handle so much since it wasn’t planned for me in the first place. I had no plans to come into the industry so it was my inability at that point to handle everything.

Sometimes you are speechless and are lost for words and it was something like that. I thought that I would take a step back and see how it feels about the whole thing and then come back.

Check her interview out with Rajeev Masand; there are two parts of the interview: Part 1 - video & Part 2 - video. Or if you prefer to read the text interview - but why would you want to read that when you can see the gorgeous Chitrangada dazzle in those videos. This is what Indian Film industry has been missing - a classy woman - who is undoubtedly talented.

Cut to 2008, and the gorgeous actress is set to light up screens with her comeback film, Sorry Bhai. In the last few months the actress and her seven-month-old son has been accompanying hubby Jyoti at various tours. Recently, she made a hush-hush trip to Mumbai after having signed Onir’s Sorry Bhai and had to give measurements for her costumes in the film. She plays an independent and feisty girl in the film, which revolves around two brothers - played by Sanjay Suri and Sharman Joshi - who run into trouble with each other after she walks into their lives.

Onir says, “When I had watched Hazaaron… I was overwhelmed by Chitrangada’s stunning looks and brilliant performances. I was extremely disappointed when she decided to quit films. While casting for this film, somebody mentioned to me that she was looking to make a comeback. Getting her phone number was a mammoth task, and I emailed her the script. Amazingly, I got a call from her after three hours. She was there on the other side and she wanted to do the film.”

What followed were a few trips to Delhi as Chitrangada was extremely cautious about the film that will see her hitting the marquee again. “I had to meet her as she wasn’t sure whether she wanted my film to mark her comeback. Once I was in Delhi, she readily agreed and signed the film the very day I met her,” adds Onir.

But Chitrangada seems to be far better equipped this time around. During her meeting with costume designer and stylist for the film, Anita Dongre, she was very concerned about her look. Anita says, “Chitrangada is very real and intense - a quality that actresses in today’s time hardly possess. She brought back memories of Smita Patil.”

The actress returns to the city later this week to film a few sequences before heading to Mauritius, where the rest of the film will be shot. Onir says, “I don’t know if she is relocating herself but she will be here till she completes shooting for the film.”

Welcome back, Chitrangada!!

My god..Believe it or not but just yesterday, was bitching & moaning to my wife that good actors vanish and the scum tend to remain. I had used Chitrangada as the example.

She had done a very good role in HKA. I liked her in it and also the protagonist’s duvidha was shown very well by her on screen

Good that she is coming back and extremely happy ot know that the movies she is doing are with Onir & Sudhir Saab as they will not make her gyrate or do things that an actor like her should not do.

BTW, Phoenixnu, You really should read a short sotry from Woody allen..Its part of his short sotry collection and there is a story about a intellectual girl..You will get a laugh from it if you are having Chitrangada as the poster girl in your cubicle. :-)

Yes she is back and she is a good actress. She was great in HKA. And the credit for that goes to the director and not so much to the actors. Intelligent she is not though. She talks of wanting to do the song and dance routine of Yash Raj films. I think she left because she was scared of being slotted as a “serious” actress. I think she was very unprofessional for not even promoting her last movie - “Kal….” So Onir, beware! Make sure you have an iron-clad contract with her!

sevian -’Intelligent she is not though. She talks of wanting to do the song and dance routine of Yash Raj films. ‘

this is a really stupid assumption .. she likes to dance whats ur gripe ?

  6. vishrant on February 18th, 2008 9:51 am

i never really get any indian criticizing song and dance.

    what’s the problem.

its like saying that malai kofta is not a real dish because it is not like burger. any thing eatable should be burger or at least resemble burger. like burger is the yardstick for anything that is eatable.

is hollywood movies are the yardstick for cinema as such.

song and dance, man it is part of our culture. have you never danced in any marriage procession. i have. i never miss any chance. and i don’t ask for the rationale behind it. from the hollywood movies i have seen, it is really difficult to tell what is going on, a burial or a marriage. people dressed up and all that. only through sorrounding i guess what it is.

they don’t get it. but they will not get our frenzied dancing in a marriage procession either. will you suggest we should stop dancing.

or will you suggest that we continue with the dancing in the procession. only in films should not show it :(

    why compare ?

the psychology behind this is of inferiority complex. you don’t feel comfortable with your identity.
and that too in half measures, billi ke goo na lipne ke na potne ke. save yourself, migrate, stop watching hindi cinema.

you ain’t gonna feel any better, just by hooting song and dance, inferiority complex run deeper than that.

and don’t give us the crap that you care. because we know better. watch tare zamien per, those who care, never compare.

    >:p

“This is what Indian Film industry has been missing - a classy woman - who is undoubtedly talented”

    Going too far are we?
Classy woman -who is undoubtedly talented–Tabu?
Chitrangada,I wouldnt brand as classy either, for that matter.

  8. Honhaar Goonda on February 18th, 2008 10:13 am

Tabu - talented - but classy.. nah… Sush is classy - but - talented… nah!

Classy.. in terms of look and personality…

  9. sevian on February 18th, 2008 6:40 pm

Nothing wrong with song and dance! It only becomes wrong when it is the be all and end all of a film like “Partner.” (Glad they are getting sued). More power to girls like Katrina Kaif then. They have no pretentions. With films like Welcome being adored by our audiences maybe that’s going to be the trend anyway.

  10. filmibhai on February 19th, 2008 5:56 am

chitrangada is classy .. and she got much more oomph than that some preening hags in the industry (read bipasha, sameera, rani etc) .. and ofcourse her acting is way better than most actresses

  11. Phoenixnu on February 19th, 2008 6:24 am

    compltly agree filmibhai!!!

  12. souvik on March 2nd, 2008 7:08 am

Smita Patil is the realistic actress that bollywood had ever produced. She destroyed the myth that actresses require mannerisms to attract the attention of the viewers.

  13. rxtreme on March 2nd, 2008 7:46 pm

Agree on Smita - a complete actress. Chitrangada could be a great actress or a one film wonder, and that short hair seriously takes away most of her charm that I saw in HKA.

  14. Neeraja on March 13th, 2008 5:21 pm

Hey! Is Chitrangada doing an item number in ‘Tera Kya Hoga Johnny?’? :O:O:O

by the way, what wre you guys shouting about, aren’t Katrinas, Sameeras and Bipashas are all there to get you guys to theatre?
