1 – It is Mashook ki Galli (Hinglish: Lover’s street). Rehman mispronounced it or squeezed it to fit in the tune. Say Mashook ki Galli very fast 20 times and it will sound like Masakalli
2 – It is Maska pao shop run by Anarkali. Maska + Anarkali = Maskalli
3 – Sonam has a massa (Hinglish: Mola mola moleeeee) and has just got it removed from Dr. Ali… there Massa+Nikli(remove) by Dr. Ali = Masakalli…

masakalli refers to the name of the pigeon. thats what ARR says in the bombay times interview he gave. it also means “free spirited” which is why the pigeon was named masakalli so its a play on words either way in the film! shud make for a fun watch!

ARR is a great composer no doubt but his quality has been degraded. I am sure you will forget this song after few days unlike Roja and Dil Se. His South Indian kind of music is appealing in the beginning but loses gradually.

“The word ‘masakali’ came from my imagination. It so happened that Rahman was playing a tune and the word just flashed in my mind. Well, someone said ar’s music is not like his old days. Anyone would feel like that at some point of time until they understand the philosophy of creativity. Its all in our expectations. We expect the next music to be like what we heard from him in the past. But we never had any expectations on his first film ‘Roja’. It was a new attempt and everyone like it and from his second movie onwards people start saying this is not like that or this..even i was saying this unitl sometime when i came through basic philosophy in our creative industry is to go to a artist or designer without any pre conceptions so that you dont restrict the true creative of the artist. Say who expected Beethoven’s symmphony before he did it. From his 2nd symphony people started to comment.
Why? and what right you have to comment on his creative expression. You like dislike its your personal opinion. Any of us dont have the right to critise any creative work. It has its own value. Only time & situations make it how succesful it its.
Rahman never tries repeat his style again. He always tries to give fresh new composition based on the situation of song and film. Every music cant be in the same line. I agree our hearts will ask for it but if it sound something like the previous one then we migh say he is repeatitive. Legends should be one of a kind. Like if theres another taj mahal then the taj mahal is not special.
So i see everything in a new perspective, masakali as a new experimentation with an unheared folky tune to suit the Delhi6 theme. What an idea, that too to experiment with this kind of music in this past paced techno dance groove era. Creative people understand the process. I used criticise other musician until i stared composing music.. I feel everyone has done a good job but AR is doing extra ordinary job.
