Director Yash Chopra is planning to sit behind the cemera again to make few actors act for his new film in this year 2008. link

He says,

“This year, I am going to direct my next film. The story has been finalised, only the script has to be given shape,”.

When a director whose filmography consists of films covering so many different areas declare that now he has started feeling creative labour pain and this year, some time, he will deliver his new creation then it creates a huge curiosity among audience.

The director has given us films covering different areas and has explored deeply the territory of relationships among humanbeings, mainly lovers, and he does provide us a multistarrer Waqt also, which still pleases the audience for its treatment and his work claims clearly that whenever he, being a creative director, has selected topics like Deewar, Trishul and Kala Pathar even then he has proved his mastery over art of story telling through visual medium.

When Amitabh Bachchan was emerging as an actor who was establishing new records in action and comedy based roles then Yash Ji arranged reincarnation of AB as a serious poet in Kabhi Kabhi. Whatever subjects he has chsoen till now relationships among different characters have been getting major focus in all his films.

His films can be divided in the categories of Very good, good and average only. Films like Fasale, Vijay and Parampara also cant be put under bad category because they were made for different reasons. In comparison to Yashi ji’s own very good films, these 3 films can look as bad but not in comparison to other films released in their respective years.

Lamhe could be his last film which can fall in to the category of very good film and we have to see which subject he has chosen this time.

Deewar, Trishul and Kabhi Kabhi were not made to project aura of Amitabh Bachchan as an actor. AB shined in these films, thats another factor. This personal touch of Yash Ji was lost in his last 2 films DTPH and Veer Zara where SRK’s characters, somehow, came out as extensions of his character in DDLJ. It may not be intentional but these are the reasons that , no matter how much commercial success these two films might have got” they will never match glory of his films made in 70s.

Hope this time Yash ji makes film where actors play the characters, he has created for them and become ready to explore acting areas under his experienced guidance of and enhance their own acting skills rather than to reduce impact of characters because of their own reservations about going out of self decided territory of acting style.

Hope we get old touch of Yash Chopra in his new film and he remains the captain of the ship when the film is seen by the audience. Hope this new film will be kept in the category of his VERY GOOD FILMS.

Audience have to get something remarkable this time from Yash ji, for which he has been known among them.

We should be charged to see his new film this year as Yash Chopra has been charged to make one.

even though DTPH may be his weakest film ..still i enjoyed it when it released ….may be because of the fact that i was in my early teens ….:) …
waiting for this movie anyway ….

As you also say, I don’t think Fassle and Vijay were bad in the context of the time when they were released. Fassle had some beautiful poetry by Shahryar. The Sunil Dutt-Rekha sub-plot was very romantic and had the unmistakeable Yash Chopra stand, but the lead actors probably were the weak links. And when it was released it got completely washed out by the deluge called Ram Teri Ganga Maili.

If this new film has Yash Chopra’s lucky mascot Shahrukh in the lead, we’ll probably get another extension of his ‘rahul” character. This is more a comment on the directors than Shahrukh because they have stopped experimenting with him these days, save for Swades and Chak De.

I agree DTPH was his wekest. full of fake emotions. an irrestible dialogue by Aruna irani to Madhuri Dixit “mohabbat baar baar hoti hai, par pyaar ek baar hi hota hai”:((:((:((:((
Could yashji explain “what is difference between mohabbat and pyar?”
DTPH was one of the rediculous SRK films in which he breaks setting of heroine and sets himself.

    @Shailesh,
Pyar (hindi word) and Mohabbat and Ishq (urdu words), all three may have slightly different meanings. In common talks people use them without giving much thought but in degree they may differ from each other.
Though because of their common use they overlap their own meanings. Ishq has got to do with Deewangi in Love though people can be found repeating “I am in Ishq”. Dont know in definte terms but may be it has origin in Sufi tradition.
Because poets and writers have used them without giving much thought so their meanings now intermingled.

@Shailesh – If I remember correctly, the dialogue was “payaar baar baar hota hai, mohabbat ek baar….” The intent was to differentiate between the intensity of the two words. In this context, pyar = infatuation, mohabbat = true love

    @Aditya,
ya Re: Fasle lead cast was the weakest link beside the story.
Vijay also suffered from the story and time to develop the character was less. Out of sudden Shakti Kapoor jumps in to the film. Same is true with Bad Man, Gulshan Grower. Film was concieved as a formula film which were in vogue then and perhaps never intention was to make a distinguished Yash Chopra Film. Commercial factor was too much superimposed. Events like separation of Hema and Rajesh Khanna were shown as fleeting moments and too much time was wasted on Sonam and on 1-2 below average songs. Till Rishi Kapoor himself tells Anil Kapoor about his relation with Rajesh Khanna, film gives no clue if Rishi Kapoor knows his father lives in same city or audience dont know if he hates his father.
Many loopholes. It had all though to allure audience, a bikini clad Sonam, kisses between Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri. Story was weakest part here.
Its even wrong to take these films as Yash Chopra’s films. Market made them via Yash Chopra.
    :(

  7. My 2c:
Actually, I have rarely found Yash Chopra’s romantic cinema that impressive, except for the music and some visuals. All his love stories have a basic premise: no 2 human beings can be in love without distractions (either internal or external). With SRK typically hamming in his (and Adi’s) films, the substance gets reduced further….

@Sanjit: That’s the basic premise of ANY love story, why single out Yash Chopra. There cannot be a love story without conflict (internal or external distractions as you call it).

In your Veer Zara review you say. “It’s good to see Yash Chopra stick to his no-nonsense exposure policy for heroines”. You should watch Vijay for the most overt and unnecessary exposure of the heroine.

This could be Yash Chopra’s last film as a director… I really hope he doesn’t compromise to satisfy commercial considerations and just makes a solid film from the heart. If he does, I believe his next film has the potential to be in the same league of any of his classics from the 70’s.

So what’s everyones favorite Yash Chopra film (as a Director)?

    My personal favorite is TRISHUL

  14. Deewar, Trishul & Mashaal are 3 of my favorites. Ok, before I get fired, I love all works of Dilip Saab and really liked him in Mashaal. I still get goosebumps when I see Deewar or Trishul. “Yaad Hai Dawar Sab, bahut saal pehle, aap race jaya karte the…” “Mein aaj bhi fenke hue paise nahi utatha”
Love this. I also strongly feel “Lamhe” was one of the best romantic flicks in India. Sadly that was never understood.

Hope that old Yash Chopra is back with this film and does not give us some wishy washy flick.

I would agree with Deepak that Lamhe was one of the best hindi movies.(Definitely in the top three during the 80’s).Also I liked Chandni despite the predictable storyline(and overweight Vinod Khanna and of course Rishi Kapoor). But the way he projected Sridevi in the film, though commercial was good.I also liked Daag and its storyline considering it was made in the 70’s.Quite a bold film for that time and commercial hit too.

Daag was a very good film though it gets ignored . also it was his first film after parting ways with his brother B.R chopra . Itefaaq also was a very well made film.

parampara veer zara and vijay were probably among his worst , though they are decent films in thier own right.

His consistency of delivering quality work over five decades and mastery over such a wide range of genres is truly amazing .

A true great of indian cinema. =d>

Deewaar, IMO, is not just the best film made by Yash Chopra, but it is indeed one of finest films ever made in India. I was a kid when I had first seen this movie during late night screening on DD. That was the first time when I fell in love with movies. I have watched it umpteen times since then, and the movie fires me up even today.. What a movie, what an experience

Deewar, Trishul, DTPH(I loved it wat to say). Veer Zaara was over the top, predictable and I hated it. Dont understand still why Lamhe is so loved by everyone(Got to sit and watch it from start to finish to get that). Kala Pathar was really good, roles well defined and the story was simply great. For his next film, SRK is fine, but dont take rani and preity and make love triangles, quadrilateral or any other mathematical shapes…………….
