Yes Boss! But is that it?

Yesterday was my lucky day. Bengaluru mein sunday ko movie tickets milna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai. But namumkin ko mumkin banane waale ko hi to FILMI kehte hain! Owing to some divine intervention from Lord CinemaIndra, I saw 2 movies at the cineMandir. First I saw Yes Man the Jim Carrey flick and followed it up wid RNBDJ. This post is about what I felt / thought after watching both these movies.
Yes Boss! But is that it? I have seen much better from these guys – Jim Carrey & SRK. Before I take this further, one thing that got me pissed was the ‘kreative liberty’ exploited in both the films. It’s ok to an extent, but itna bhi nahi hazam hota yaar. Yes Man was almost bordering on Bollywood. Add an hour of naach-gaana & melodrama, shiffon saree-swiss alps and BINGO, it’s a hardkore Hindi film. Maybe even worse. Damn.
No, both these movies weren’t utter crap. Rab ne had Suri & Yes Man had the trademark Jim Carrey moments (how the fuck does that guy move his facial muscles to give those expressions… PRICELESS). But take that out of the film, Phussssssss. Falls flat. Can’t imagine Yes Man without Jim Carrey & Rab ne without SRK. Mediocre films but salvaged by the lead actor/s.
Then the thought of AdiChopra writing the script on the balance sheet overpowers me. I loose track of my existence & zoom into the myriad world of ChopraPradesh. No stone left unturned & overtunrned. He wrote everything to make the movie a SOF (sell out film, for the uninitiated). Had it not been a SOF, we would have seen more of Suri & his extraordinary love for Taani. Par ye ho na saka, aur ab ye aalam hai ki … blah blah blah!
Cut to Idli-Dosa Pradesh. In the hall. AdiChopra knows his business far too well. The aam-junta (middle & upper middle class families) that turned out in huge numbers, did what AdiChopra wanted them to do. I was unfortunate enough to be seated with a ‘Big Fat Happy Indian Family’ and they got all the cues right. Uncle knew when to laugh, aunty knew when to get senti & the fucking kids. They knew how to enjoy a SRK film. “Papa popcorn, papa pepsi and on & on… Groan!
What struck me in Rab ne was the end sequence. AdiChopra wanted people to leave when he was thanking all his stars. But the people didn’t. There was Suri yaara! Up there on the screen! The real Suri. The shy guy. The everyman. Taking us through his life, after AdiChopra was through with his fucking balance sheet. This was the first time ever that the audience didn’t bother to leave. They were glued. Some standing, some on their bums. Watching with almost moist eyes (khushi ke aansoo yaara) & clapping for Suri.
What a waste of opportunity. I felt sad for Suri. I felt sad for Carrey. Incredibly amazing actors, but what do they get? Balance sheets. Huh! I think there is some karmic connection between Jim & SRK. Or maybe SRK is ‘inspired’ by Jim Carrey. Could there be a ‘paying tribute’ business happening there? I dunno. But yes, I would like SRK to keep ‘lighting up our lives’ with or without ChopraPower!
So stay filmi, till the next. Alakh Niranjan.
P.S.: Saw Anurag Kashyap in the Tera Kya Hoga Johny trailor. What screen presence sirjee!

I have not seen Yes Man yet. Waiting to see with my Taani-ji. I think it should be fun “Christmas” movie.
On RNBDJ, I think the end credits was a masterstroke. Usse pehla ka sab kuch maaf kar diya sab ne. Suri ji ka kamaal hi samjho.
I read in some interview that SRK ad-libbed the entire thing without script.
Oh well Jim Carrey has Truman Show, Man on the Moon, Grinch, Lemony Snicket on his CV, and he needs the Yes Man, Dumb & Dumber to get his paycheck.
So i guess a fair balance there.
And i forgot to add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind too.
Hey Vishesh, Yes Man is exactly dat and some more! I hope u n ur taaniji hv a nice xmas & a very happy, prosperous n filmi new year. gawd bless bro!
@ RS: guess u r right bro… i loved him in the mask & bruce almighty!
Yaar, Big Flix does not have Eternal…Mind :-(
I really want to watch that movie.
.
I agree with you Ratnakar,
a star needs commercial hits at regular interval to keep pursuing his artistic needs.
Oye Magik bhai,
Thanks and I wish you the same. 2009 brings something special and fulfills your dreams (at least one filmy dream).
BTW SRk of the 90’s is more like Jim Carrey, not the SRK of this decade.
The fact is JC, has done more better roles in this decade so far than SRK. And more diverse too.
Look at JC’s output this decade Grinch, Majestic, Lemony Snicket, Eternal Sunshine.
When i saw SRK in Yes Boss, yeah he did remind me a lot of Carrey.
But this decade, SRK has been more like a Richard Gere.
All said & done as long as SRK or Jim Carrey & other superstars can balance movies to showcase their acting with movies to set the cash registers ringing, I think its a fair deal.
My vote for SRK over JC…to be precise Suri ji over JC. I havent seen Yes Man yet..still my points for the Knight Rider for following scenes
1. We all know and believe tht a girl looks “sexiest” in wet hair (Geele Baal) and thts the only time whn you can watch somebody staring at her. Yet SURI was busy staring at the tiffin box. – 10 points to Suri
2. Is se jyada pyaar ki na to mujhe aadat hai, na main bardasth kar paonga. – 10 points to SRK
3. Mera uske saath love kara de mere yaara !! – 10 points for Suri
4.Paani Puri – No Body ever thot that Paani Puri can be a new symbol of love..a layman’s love..a symbol of Pure and Honest Love – 20 points for Raj (Naam to sune hi hoga)
5. Taani Partner – A new comer, full of freshness, a breath of fresh air, did a justice with the role – 10 points for Taani Partner
6. The romance was real and genuine…no heavy heavy dialogues, no sexy dance numbers, no rolling from hills on each other, no roses, no expensive gifts – 5 points to RNBDJ
7. Suri ji never touched Taani and i think the best expression of love is achieved without touching. – 10 Points to Suri
8. Awesome songs – Even a song like Dance pe Chance are with worthy words. Haule Haule and Tujh me Rab dikhta hai were amazing. – 10 points for songs
9. Simplicity of the entire movie – A city like amritsar, the dresses of the actors and also the same has been taken care of in Dance steps (5, 6, 7, 8 and back and 1,2,3,4)..unlike Dil to pagal hai.- 10 points for simplicity
10. THE END of the movie – when the audience was about to make their way to exit, Suri ji starts narrating the photographs and story behind each photo. The audience was glued at the exit gate – 100 points to RNBDJ

@ Ashu: when the hell did u join YRF? LOL! very interesting observations bro. U capture the spirit of a hopeless romantik! salut!
@ashish i think suri touches taani (shake hand) when taani say that they have been selected in top 10
i felt that movie was not that bad as i liked SRK as suri and his some of good scenes involving Suri ji…
@Magik – Dude..a dialogue like “Mera uske saath love kara de mere Yaara”, can make any body cry, at least someone who love or loved somebody once. The movie was predictable, yet redifining love. Its a lesson for the Y Generation who are obsessed with looks. It tells you love the person for what he or she is..and not how he or she looks. Tell me who the hell wont connect with tht?
There are my things abt the movie like a promise made to a dying father, a woman doesn’t recognise her husband just because he has a moustache and a different hairstyle. But if you have seen Superman – The Superman and Clark Kent looks the same, yet no body questions, because there was a promise made to thm earlier.
Shahrukh was reborn in OSO but people likes it…even Chak de was very unrealistic..no body knows the name of the players of Indian women hocky team…but Kabir Khan came and made it to the world cup.
For me, RNBDJ was a true entertainer, and it was a normal, common and layman’s love story.
One more thing which came in my mind…just google adi chopra’s image and compare it with suri’s image (Very similar)..and thn Taani (Anushka) and Rani (Mukharji)….lolz

@ Ashu: Mera kisike saath bhi love kara de mere Yaara… wink!
this is strange. in my post of RNBDJ i m getting only brickbats while the bouquets are here
anyways…hum hain rahi pyar ke…phir milenge…chalte chalte…
@ Krazyrals: ye jagah hi kuchh ajeeb si hai. ajeeb duniya aur ajeeb-o-gareeb paagal log! Cheers mate!
@crazyrals – Dude, thats the irony of life. You appriciated the movie in your post so everybody was hell bent on pointing out the mistakes in the movie.
Magik had a very different approch towards the movie, and that was not at all a review of the movie. So another 100 points for Magik.
I liked your post as well..but i din commented on tht asi havent seen the movie by tht time.

@Magi(k/c): Had to ask this, why is c=k in your world?
@ Thakur saab, the reasons range from cheap thrills to numerology to AK’s no smoking. I have got people @ offis who call me K (just K)… it’s kinda lucky for me… but heck, no specifik reason…
