Actress Leela Naidu, who acted in a number of Hindi films including the national award winning ‘Anuradha’ as well as ‘The Householder’ by Merchant Ivory Productions, died on Tuesday in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. (TimesofIndia report)

She was crowned ‘Miss India’ in 1954 and was declared as one of the most beautiful women in the world by Vogue.

Here’s one of the lovely songs from her movie ‘Anuradha’ featuring her and Balraj Sahni:

May her soul rest in peace.

Absolutely love the songs of Anuradha.
very graceful lady indeed. Loved her ads where shed appear with her natural grey hair (unlike 80 yr old corpses sporting jet black hair) and still look statuesque !!! Sheer grace …
    RIP Leela

The woman with “No bad angles” and an actress of considerable talent- Leela Naidu was in the Vogue list of 10 most beautiful woman,in her time. Her ex-husband, the poet, Dom Moraes describes her in his autobiography “Never at Home” as ineffably beautiful.
What is of note here is that our film world could not capture her immense talent and beauty except in a few films, notable of which were The Householder, Anuradha and Ye Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke.
Satyajit Ray was so taken by her talent that he planned a film with Marlon Brando, Shashi Kapoor and her.The film was named The Journey, which was never to be.Bad for us.
It makes me sad today, people like her die and I continue to wallow in mediocrity.

It makes me sad today, that woman like her die and I continue to wallow in mediocrity. She was an immensely talented actor, not wholly captured by our cinema.Worked in very few films which would substantiate her talents, notable among which were Ye Raaste Hain Pyar Ke and The Householder.Satyajit Ray was immensely taken by her talents and had planned a movie with Brando, Shashi Kapoor and her called ‘The Journey’,which was never to be.
A photographer describing her beauty said “She was a woman with no bad angles”.Her ex-husband described her in his autobiography “Never at Home” as ‘ineffably beautiful’.Leela Naidu truly was a a very significant woman of our times, not completely known by us.I hope to know more when Jerry Pinto’s new book hits the stands
