   Well a pretty strong worded outburst i must say, but a very required one. we have more important things to worryabout. Shilpa shetty losing or winning does not effect the country in anyway. I will choose to be a “NRI”, rather than be a indian whose ambassador is Shilpa shetty in a shitty sitcom.

   She was better off here in India;)Some Indian media thinks it’s a very prestigious thing for an Asian celebrity to be a part of that show. Some people have no work and they want to make things big to find a reason to hue and cry. Let all of those souls have some fun, let the TRP’s go up, let the media have some juicy stuff to cover their papers, let UK president talk abt MS.Shilpa in their parliement…let is happen :d

   OM - a valid point of view. But does this belong on PFC? The fact that Shilpa Shetty is an actress led to this situation, true. But the post is about nationalism, racism and other -isms that are getting press, and it really has nothing to do with film…

   This is just my personal point of view. The post might have been perfect for PFC if you had talked about the power of the media in some way, like -
   - how TV and specifically reality TV has captured the imagination of the masses and why that is so
   - why Shilpa and others go on TV (to remake their careers, international exposure)
   - how media, when appropriately marketed, with the right content, has the power to make parliaments in not one, but two countries debate a thus far hidden and/or irrelevant issue (not saying racism is irrelevant, just that this could have been about anything really - nuclear weapons technology, soccer, whatever)

   No harm meant in anyway - just trying to have a positive discussion on what PFC should include. I’d love your opinion.

   What is NEW about it?…

   Media has got the power to manipulate…
   and the number of mindless dorks, who are dying to succumb to this manipulation, is remarkably substantial around the globe …

   Common you guys must have seen movies like Dog Day Afternoon and Natural Born Killers; they speak volumes about this maniupulation…
   No matter if its indian media (which blindly apes US media) or any other, they CREATE absurd needs so that they can cater them with an eqally repugnant absurdity…

   And this will be UTOPIC to expect the MAMMOTH of MEDIA to act sensibly; especially when the only logic is MONEY…or are we trying to prove a preposterous hypothesis of ETHICAL MEDIA here? Well then its just so MAGNIFICIENTY unrealistic…

   Now, this is offcourse utterly ridiculous to judge somone’s patriotism over this kind of maybe/mostly-FABRICATED-issues and I dont think one, with his/her sane mind, should even bother to give an ounce of his/her grey matter to such craPP; and that includes writing an gratuitously-over-abusive post too…

   No offense Om, but why did you keep revolving around some totally irrelevant points such as Ms. Shetty’s Hot Body, your wet dreams, her silicon valley, and your fantacies (the sequence is totally coincidental…not intended) and blah blAh? I understand the angst but couldnt get this Verbal Diarrhea of personal assault….

   This is fucking serious guys. If you think this is something frivolous like the ash abhishek circus you are mistaken. Technically this might not be ‘racism’ but does that make it acceptable?
   If not racism this is ugly bullying.Bullying is as serious an issue in the UK as is racism. Many school kids drop out of school after being bullied. Bullying leaves childen scarred.It sometimes takes years for children to pick up the pieces and start all over again. Its as bad as rape or child abuse.What we have seen on CBB is school ground bullying where a group gangs up against a vulnerable one and the rest of the kids for fear of being bullied or merely to ‘fit in’ align themselves with the bully. The saddest thing is that those mofos are role models for british youth. They are not isolated cases and represent what the young in britain have come to be today.You find them all over england..Thanks to the halla gulla people have started talking about it.
   The media overkill is very much justified.It has sparked off a wide ranging debate on issues like britains falling education standards to the xenophobia and the loss of old british values.

   Yes this is vile entertainment and am sure channel 4 are rubbing their hands in glee but if something good can come out of it whats the problem? I want people to vote for shilpa shett not because she is an amabassador and represents india or some such shit…But because when those bastards walk out, are pelted with eggs, lose their multi million contracts, this can deter atleast some bullies. In a land where bullying has become cool it can send a message that bullying does not work. Tomorrow when somebody of thinks of bullying,spitting on and calling an asian kid a ‘fucking paki’, i want him to get reminded of this shilpa thing and the fact that there were millions who dragged it to the house of commons.

    now shilpa shud hav expected this and not shed tears over this fact….. as far as bullying goes it exists in India from long bak…..
    i did my engineering from a nationally reputed college where ragging is banned only on college notice boards….and ask me wat happens in ragging….i went there expecting everything tat happened….i went into depression too but finally i had to fight my way out

    now shilpa was paid in crores to be part of the show…and to win the show u hav fight…if some inspirational brit calls her a dog, she shud giv bak with a fitting answer and not make it a racist issue or go complaining to the media abt it…….
    well in my college, if somebody goes complaining abt ragging, uski to maa ch** dete the…..
    its survival of the fittest……

    Racism does not prevail in white western world is like saying casteism does not prevail in India:
    They are real and have strong existence deeply rooted inside the inhabitants living here and there.

    Shilpa was never so famous and I guess ( have seen only news clips on TV) if there were racist attack on her by someone, it might have been rationalised by the popularity and support she got from all over the world, mostly by the Indians. What if case is bad, she got her fame and once she is back in India, she will be booked for 2-3 months for interviews to clarfify or to tell about the incidences. directors will sign her to encash her recntly got international popularity. Whole world has seen her face on TV now. and in 2007 she gets her life partner also so she will get married.
    What else on earth she needs?
    This is her Rajyoga. She must sail with wind. See it as it is:)

    she didn’t actually make an allegation in the first place! She merely spoke to another house member feeling that is what she felt. However Channel 4 has intervened in the show and has had words with the parties concerned and yday shilpa and jade made up.

    I don’t think anyone is denying it doesn’t exist. Parliment members are just saying it won’t be tolerated.

    She won’t be getting any compensation as she signed various things in her contract and she and Channel 4 have agreed it wasnt racial abuse. Just a cultural disagreement.

    Why should she have expected this? Do you go to your workplace/college etc expecting to be bullied or picked on? Just because she agreed to go on a show and be paid for it then taht doesn’t mean she agrees to be intimidated.

    A wooden Bollywood actress who uses gazillion litres of gylcerine in a reality show will lead to tears. Long time Shipa has been in a movies & wat a platform she has got for coming back.

    She knows what she has got in and what the ourcome is gonna be. Brokers are giving odds of her winning the show.

    Just kidding, well said though… especially as no one should expect to be bullied.

    No one asks for that!!

    Sadly though, this problem doesn’t show signs of dissapearing.

    My nephew is 3years old and even he is a victim of bullying at NURSERY!!
    Trust me, he didnt ask for that!!

    It saddens me whenever I pick up a paper and find that yet another youngster has taken their life due to bulliying…

    I can see why some people don’t want to have kids…

Sad to hear about your three year old nephew, it’s a terrible thing to endure and i know this might not be the place but it’s worth getting in touch with the early years dept to see if they could intervene, plus nursery manager needs to be made aware of the situation. If they can nip it in the bud at that age then hopefully the effects won’t last.

    Ha, I don’t think she did her research before hand so I don’t think she know’s what the outcome will be. She went into the show just as a publicity stint, I doubt she or anyone else would have thought that situations between her and other housemates would be this hostile. She may have expected everyone to be cordial to one another.

    But can u believe?? NURSERY!!

    But back to our ‘desh ki beti’ I dont think it was only a publicity stint, as Channel4 specificaly wanted a celebrity from India and had approached a few (Kareena Kapoor to name one, but she asked for like 50k or something stupid like that!)

    All said and done, I still think she’s done extremley well, I am so happy with the way she handled everything.

    Will miss not seeing her everyday though… sad I know, but thats how I feel!!

    When so many people like us, who dont give shit about shilpa shetty and her movies talk about her so much for last few days because of some Idiotic show and media who dont have nuthing but showing off shit on TV, made me realize that this is exactly what the producers of the show wanted, every one to talk about the show.

    I think we have better shit to discuss than this one.

    Varun, maybe at first the producers wanted that, but even they probably didnt expect it to get so out of control.

    It’s like this…. some see it as a crappy reality show, where people just go to bounce back outa the oblivion and try to find a new lease of life for their non existent careers….

    But others would argue that this has actualy opened a can of worms regarding issues about racism, equality etc..which so many are aware of, but we dont normally not discussed.

    Well, not globaly atleast!

    And we have to weigh out the pro’s and cons…
    its not just about Shilpa Shetty any more.. infact, she isnt even aware of 3/4’s of the stuff!!

    Wait till she gets out, thats when she’ll realise that she wasnt imagining things!!

    But knowing Shilpa, she’ll still try to diffuse the situation….

    So, Varun ‘jee’ its really not that straight forward…..:(

    @ Shripriya I respect your opinion. Does this topic belong to PFC? Yes in my opinion as it deals with media. Media be Cinema, TV, Newspapers, Blogs, Sites…and when you see same news flashed day in and day out..then you get a certain OM spitting venom…..

    My ten pence on this…this did start off I think as a racial issue being reported by the media…but now it has become an issue which needs to be milked while it’s in the headlines…anyone and everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon…
    And did you guys watch yesterday…obviously someone’s had a word with the three in question…they are all of a sudden full of compassion etc…

    @ Orange, I love mangoes…I love them becuase they taste good, i love them because there are different varities of them, i love them because they are seasonal….i love them because i cant have them daily….I might not love mangoes if i was fed with them for my breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack, dinner 24X7, infact i might even get nauseative to it….

    now replace “mangoes” with Shilpa Shetty, “taste” with Sillicon valley, “Seasonal” with Wet dreams, “cant have” with fantasies….

    what a load of crap! i don’t understand it. precisely, why people wanna talk about the show when they think its a crap? no one contacts me asking to vote for shilpa? heck, i’d rather shred my pilling up junk mails then doing watching that show.

    Racism in real life is different matter all together - it should not be tolerated. Its a game show and things do get dirty when competition comes into play. Heck, even in sports, racism exists. Without trying to justify what might have happened, to me its a waste of space. (i haven’t even seen or heard what is being said but whole world seems to be talking about it)

    Besides, I don’t think anyone is not guilty of being racist ever in their life and has never said a racist comment, even if not to the face of the other person.

    Even worse, its lame to protest in India and all, when its not even there TV show. She does not represent India. It was just a selling strategy to the Asian population in the UK.

    racism and bullying happens every where… i guess not many of us can escape it.. well i, for one, couldnt.. but learned from an early age…and the fact that you take actions aganist such things makes you a true hero..actually i will have to continue this later as i have to go and cuss at my salon lady .. my hair is all fucked up.. (sorry for using the F word, but i am very upset)..

    Om, my man. You hit the truly hit the nail on the head. I had tears in my eyes when I read the line when you said that calling someone a “dog” is NOT racist ….. Finally, a kindred soul, I wondered. Because that is EXACTLY how I feel.

    In retrospect, the funniest part is the climax of the story. Shilpa Shetty explicitly denied any racism (she appeared to be genuinely shocked at the accusations of racism against her housemates in the interview at the end of the show), fully expressed her desire to stay in UK and made a whole bunch of money … the racism controversy, for her, is a gift that will keep on giving. The punk-ass bastards who carried placards in her name have overdrawn from the racism account and when a real case involving racism with a real Indian, you know, the ones who hold a job, have no underworld Dubai connections, and look not so sexy comes along … well let me know how loud Kamal Nath and DasMunshi will scream.
