YRF n my new year resolution

I know. Its bit late to make a new year resolution. But as they say, better late that never. I have decided that m not going to watch any more YRF movies. Because they make MONEY only. They dont make MOVIES anymore. why cant aditya chopra go and do some tel-saboon business instead. he is so good in packaging n marketing. n will get all teh big stars also.

In recent past even as they delivered shit after shit, i went to the theatres everytime to see whats new every time. May be that whats they call “brand equity” in marketing books. hum-tum, bunty aur babli, salaam namaste, neal n nikki, dhoom2, fanaa. the only film which i liked was kabul express. though it wasnt anything great but decent. atleast there was something new. not that candy floss shit all over the place.

Now YRF’s first release of 2007 Tara Rum Pum is ready and the promos are out. its releasing on 27th of april. Just have a look at the promo and you can make out the whole film. Songs are so bad. no new sound. mediocrity at its best. all formulas that have clicked n so this one should. Same Hum Tum pair. Clothes, their looks, camera angles, foreign locations n mannerisms. Everything looks the same. javed akhtar’s words never sounded so dumb. take this…..suppose i ask a kid to write four lines rhyme for a story that deals with a family’s khushi n gam days. n put one condition that the words tara rum pum should fit in somewhere. m sure, damn sure that the kid will also write the same…. gayenge hum, gungunayenge hum, chahe khushi ho ya gum, tara rum pum, tara rum pum!!! or some shit liek that. javed akhtar has written the same. give me a break!!! Its supposedly Life is beautiful meets Day of glory!!! whatever that means. But m shit bored of this candyfloss. And the sad thing is you know that they will still make money. after bikes n babes…YRF is bringing F1 racing to hindi films!! my take…better watch some F1 racing at home. will be much better than saif’s racing n rani’s rona-dhona.

The other releases from YRF this year are Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Chak De India, Laga Chunari Me Daag and Aaja Nachale.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is by Shaad Ali, who has made one exact copy (saathiya) and one crappy film (bunty aur babli) so far. It stars abhishek bachchan, preity zinta, bobby deol and lara dutta. Its again a love story. Boy meets girl n because of some reason both  pretend that they already have boyfriend/girlfriend. So u can guess the fun formula there and how they finally live happily ever after. Back to London locations again!!!supposed to be very high on style n all that. my take…play some nice songs, call ur friends n have some drinks n do some jhoom barabaar jhoom with them instead. m damn sure that will much more fun.

Chak De India is by Shimit Amin (so some hope there). Stars shahrukh khan ( no more  hope anymore) and many new faces including deepika padukone. Story ?? A hockey coach trains the women hockey team and they manages to win the world cup hockey. my take…will watch bend it like beckham again. Its more or less similar story told from coach’s point of view.

Laga chunari me daag is by pradeep sarkar (again some hope there. parineeta guy). stars rani mukherjee, abhishek bachchan, konkona sen sharam, kunal kapoor n jaya bachchan. set in small town. some foreign guys come to shoot a documentary film. family gets cheated. no money. no izzat. And how rani mukherjee handles the whole situation. moves to big city and discovers herself. if rani mukherjee cries again ( after babul…then no more hope). my take…will watch ritwik ghatak’s meghe dhaka tara all over again. when the actor screams out in the end….dada, aami bachtae chai (dada, i want to live)….to her brother, u feel like going there n holding her hand. the words will resonate even hours after u r done with the film. n can watch it hundred times for my favourite actor anil chatterjee. if u havent seen it yet…do check out.

Aaja Nachale is by cinematographger anil mehta. stars madhuri dixit, konkona sen sharam and kunal kpoor. its inspired by chocolat. replace the chocolate with theatre/ naach-gaana. m very sure that i will break my resolution for this film. only becuase of madhuri dixit. but if they do any tara rum pum, then will stick to my resolution. again ghatak can save u…..check out komal gandhar….theatre, plays, politics, partition, love, freindship. it cant get any more intoxicating that this. backfrop of theatre groups and bengal partition.

sometimes i wonder if yrf needs directors at all for these kind of films. scratch the surface a bit n u will figure out their formula of 2+2 = 4. do these directors contribute to the film in any way ? their point of view ? their perspective ? i think NO. yrf can place a log of wood n put a director’s cap on it n still can shoot everything smoothly. churning out the same shit.

will yrf ever make a film that will get some space in a film history book ? deewar, silsila, kabhi kabhi, kala patthar, mashal, lamhe n many others. they r all history. n they will always be there. Or may be only a new chapter will be written for this new era….how chiffon sarees n switzerland made yrf superrich n superdumb!!! N aditya chopra will surely be remembered for making the worst copy of a hollywood film….mohabateein from dead poets society!! n somebody said films reflect our society, values n thoughts of that specific era…socio-political situation.

( lot of info about the movies may be not accurate. but m sure the conclusions are more than accurate)

:o what in the world r u saying?…yashraj films r really good.especially if saif’s in it….i mean hum tum, salaam namaste, and now tara rum pum….the movie(TRP) has hollywood stunt directors who directed movies like jurassic park, the departed and lots more….i agree all other yashraj films lined up sound a little boring but hey F1 racing is a new concept in bollywood…so c’mon cheer up at least 4 the first film and let’s go tara rum pum……. :d

lol, Ta Ra Rum Rum, is a ‘cartoon’; it should be watched for a good laugh, to take the mick and all, you know.

nah seriously, i agree with you; they are just scamming people. And funniest thing is that the audience is happy to be scammed.

vishal & shekhar going shanker-eshan-loy way, not good. [-(

Looking at the poster, Tara Rum Pum Pum looks like copy/inspired version of Man and a woman. Though, I could be wrong. A little preview about the movie could help to nail down the source :)

Phoenixnu, indeed yrf as of now is a marketing-media setup rather than a creative-content tie-up.And they know where there moolah is coming from-the glamour struck, culturally alienated, home-sick or guilt-driven diaspora who wants to see all the style, sheen, fashion n fun prevalent back home in India..Story is just a peg to showcase all this. At least one can learn this aspect of marketing and promotion from yrf..as they say if u r given a lemon, make a lemonade..cheers

Have seen promos of this crap and believe me F1 does not look like this. Have been going to F1 religiously each year for the last 3 years (gonna be going for the 4th time on 15th)and believe its not like this. Movie will be an insult to one more sport just like All Rounder & Awwal number were.

And please don’t tell me they have copied Life is Beautiful. It’s one of my all time favourites.

Sounds like you feel very strongly about your new year resolution Phoenixnu!

Yes, alot of the recent ‘productions’ from the Yash Raj banner bear some similarities but i guess they continue to endorse that whole ‘feel good’ cinema.

I personally feel that the Bhatts have dropped their standards in cinema, barring a ‘Gangster’ here or there, yet I still give their films a ‘dekko’ as you never know….

I do this with Vikram Bhatts films all the time! I watch them…hate them…then go see his latest release too.

I just feel that every film deserves a chance… as a good director can make a bad film and ‘maybe’ vice versa…

I doubt many will agree with me though!! :((

yup.. my money ain’t funding the YRF bank balance anymore. been there, done that. and now… done. no more hindi movies with ’stars’ at theaters unless it really warrants for it. they’re not even worth the pirated copies. the next one i watch in the theater will be “no smoking”.

From the trailer TRRP looks like desi version of Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Only, the stunts look better than the original in the trailer.
I’m loving this website, PFC. I’ve been visiting regularly from past 1-2 months. It rocks. Thanks to whoever made this possible.

Count me as one of those who can’t understand how and why yrf movies click. Their nadir was Dhoom 2 and surprisingly that was the biggest hit of 2007. Incidentally I also thought Black and Eklavya was extremely overrated.
The recent movie I really liked was Nishabd. From Jiah to Amitabh to Revathy, the characterization and acting was note perfect and the ending I thought was fitting.
